Magical Science Lessons at ISA Tianhe 在魔法世界中探究学习

Year 4 students have concluded their final UOI for the semester – "How the World Works". Students have benefited from their journey in exploring the properties and variations of different materials. Teachers incorporated the Harry Potter theme into the UOI lessons to encourage independent learning and stimulate students' learning interests. The Year 4 students worked in groups to explore the materials and early adaptation to PYP Exhibition. Finally, the students exhibited the results of the properties of materials investigation in the form of a website with the help of teachers.


四年级学生结束了本学期的最后一个探究单元学习——“世界是如何运作的“。在探索不同材料的特性和变化的旅程中,学生从中受益匪浅。为了鼓励学生自主学习,激发学生学习兴趣,老师们将哈利波特主题融入到探究课程。四年级的学生以小组学习探究的方式对不同的材料进行主题学习,同时为了让他们提前适应小学毕业成果展。最后,在老师的帮助下,学生们把他们探究的成果以网站的形式展览。

Inquiry Background

探究学习背景

The investigation background was based on the "Quidditch World Cup" from Harry Potter. "Quidditch World Cup" is one of the most important sporting events in Harry Potter. During the inquiry journey, students took on the role of the Quidditch Materials Committee, and they found the most suitable materials for the food and items for the tournament. They had conclusions through predictions, fair tests, actual investigations, data statistics, and variables.本次科学主题探究以哈利·波特故事中的“魁地奇世界杯”为背景展开。”Quidditch魁地奇”在《哈利·波特》中是一项最重要的体育赛事。在本次探究旅程中,学生扮演的角色是魁地奇材料委员会,为赛事的食品和物品寻找最适合的材料。他们通过预测分析、操作实验、实际调查、数据统计、实验变量等得出最终结论。

Preparation Surfaces

食物保鲜层 

 Hugo, Charlotte, Rosie, Sting 

Students investigated which materials were suitable for covering food surfaces. Their goal was to find materials that would not absorbent or scratch easily and prevent the growth of bacteria. They determined that stainless steel was the most suitable material through predictions, experiments, data, and investigations. They tested various materials such as wood, stainless steel, glass, cardboard, ceramic, and cling film. Experimental tests and statistics were carried out on the above materials, so they concluded that stainless steel was the most suitable material for food surfaces.

学生们寻找适用于覆盖食物表面的材料。他们的目标是寻找不易吸水或不易划损的材料,以预防细菌的滋生。他们对多种材质进行实验测试,如木头、不锈钢、玻璃、纸板、陶瓷、保鲜膜。通过对以上材料进行了实验测试和数据统计,他们得出的结论是不锈钢是最适合用于保护食品表层的材料。

Keeping It Hot

Students were looking for a material for the most suitable insulator, as hot drinks could be served in the tent. Students explored, experimented, tested, and recorded data around the topic, concluding that the card cups acted as the best insulation. The card cup keeps the container at a specific temperature for the longest time, but it only lasts for 20 minutes; if it takes longer than 20 minutes to finish the drink, students suggested using a tin can. Also, paper cups are the best insulators, and paper cups are less likely to be burned than tin cans; tin cans are a good conductor of heat.

为了可以在帐篷中供应热饮,学生需要找出最适合的绝缘体和最保温的材料。学生们由此展开探索、实验测试、记录数据,得出的结论是纸杯具有最好的保温作用。纸杯让容器的温度在最长的时间内保持一定的温度,但是它只能维持20分钟;如果超过20分钟才能喝完,学生建议使用锡罐。同时,纸杯是最优良的绝缘体,纸杯比被锡罐烫伤的可能性要小;锡罐具有较强的导热性。

Food Containers

The students explored which material would be the most suitable for the food containers and, through a series of investigations, found that Brown Card would be the most suitable material. Brown Paper is easy to fold but not easy to shape, so Brown Card was the students' final choice.

学生们在探究哪种材料最适合用作于食物打包盒,通过一系列的探究发现牛皮硬纸是最适合的材料。牛皮纸材质的特性是容易折叠,但不容易变形,因此牛皮硬卡纸是学生们最终的选择。

Electrical Wands

In Harry Potter, magic wands are a tool used by wizards to perform magic, a long wooden bar with an inner core that can emit powerful and dangerous electrical energy. The students conducted research tests to find the best electrical conductor and insulator material. Ultimately, the students concluded that plastic and metal were the most suitable materials for the wand. They decided that metal was the most suitable material because it is a good conductor of electricity and does not break easily. Plastic is a good material because it is a good insulator, meaning it does not conduct electricity well. Another interesting fact is that it does not melt easily.

Elf Defenders

Students were asked to explore and investigate which material would be the best sound insulator. Through decibel tests and investigations, the foam was the best material for sound insulation. The foam reduces loud volumes by 10 decibels, from 88 to 77 decibels, and the material is soft.

为了制作降噪耳罩,学生们需要寻找最佳的隔音材料。通过分贝测试和调查,发现泡沫是最佳隔音的材料。泡沫可以将巨大的音量降低10分贝,如从88分贝到77分贝,并且泡沫材质柔软,适合佩戴。

Soluble Solutions

Students tested the solubility of breadcrumbs, salt, sugar, cocoa powder, coffee, and flour to find the ingredients with the lowest melting points and those suitable for making them into beverages. Through experimental research and statistics, cocoa powder and coffee were the most suitable beverage ingredients.

学生们对面包屑、盐、糖、可可粉、咖啡、面粉进行了可溶性测试,寻找熔点最低的材料以及适合制作成饮料的材料。通过实验调查与数据统计,可可粉和咖啡是最适合制作成饮料的原材料。
