As one of the most prestigious international essay prizes in the humanities and social sciences, John Locke Essay Competition annually invites high school students from around the globe to present their insights about a particular field in 2,000 words. Students are invited to explore a wide range of challenging and interesting questions beyond the confines of the school curriculum, and are encouraged to cultivate the characteristics that turn good students into great writers: independent thought, depth of knowledge, clear reasoning, critical analysis and persuasive style.  The brightest, most thoughtful, and most knowledgeable students can be shortlisted and invited to the awards ceremony. Among these students, a final grand prize winner will stand out.

John Locke Essay Competition is recognized by prestigious universities in the UK and the US. Students who achieve a Distinction in the competition can gain a competitive advantage in the applications to universities in the US and the UK. Students who have participated in the competition have gained undergraduate admissions to Universities of Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Oxford, and Cambridge.

All of the essay prizes are judged by a panel of senior academics drawn from leading universities including Oxford and Princeton. The judges will choose their favourite essay from each of seven subject categories, and then select an overall 'best essay' across the seven subjects: Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology and Law.

Since its start, the competition has attracted thousands of students from around the world each year. Students face fierce competition when trying to get awards. With more than 19,000 students from 138 countries/regions participating in this year's competition, more than twice as many as last year, this year's competition is super fierce!
