New school year is finally here! But none shall forget. The COVID-19 has pushed online education to its historical new high. Education is evolving. How does education adapt to the new internet+ era and what should teachers and students do? Let’s find out with the BIBS Shunyi Campus Head of School and Chinese Principal.

The quality and quantity of online teaching has been improving at an incredible rate during the past 10 years. Not long ago it was impossible to find credible online teaching, this is no longer the case. The world’s leading universities including Tsinghua, Harvard, MIT, Cambridge, and Oxford offer online programs. In fact, students are now able to complete entire high school diplomas and university degrees online. Many industries rely on online learning for their employees, no longer offering face-to-face instruction. When adults want to learn something new, our first inclination is to go online. When was the last time one of us picked up an encyclopedia or purchased a print manual? As artificial intelligence technologies continue to improve, our children might be the first generation to do most of their learning online.

Improvements we are seeing in online learning include more interactivity, more user choice, and more assessment option. Another advance we are seeing is the ability of advanced algorithms to adapt to the user, delivering individualized learning experiences. At BIBS we have begun using an adaptive assessment tool to measure student achievement against international standards. Students are able to select different difficulty levels within the software they use to learn numeracy and literacy skills.

A challenge for adults is keeping their skills and knowledge up-to-date. For both parents and teachers, a significant challenge is mastering the new technologies our children and students use. In order to make our technologies valuable instructional tools, like any master, we need to truly understand how and when to use them.

It’s been a very challenging time to all schools, teachers, students and parents since the outbreak of COVID-19. It has also provided us with an opportunity to review our education. The BIBS online teaching program is a rehearse of future education. Content and object stay the same as class teaching but only in online pattern.

Online teaching is a test for teacher’s professional skills and knowledge, it requires teachers’ online class management and IT capability, and the accuracy of class language and knowledge imparting. Online teaching offers teachers a broader source for teaching resources.

Online teaching has a more comprehensive reflection and assessment structure. Every online class will be watched by both students and their parents, which will encourage teachers to keep reflecting and improving their teaching.

Independent Learning

A new way to learn. The new learning pattern using internet technologies brings a lot of changes. Students must become an active learner. There is no real-time competition in an online class. Students may watch the teaching video again if needed, or post questions online for their teachers. Online teaching also creatives more opportunity for project-based learning, comprehensive learning and inquiry-based learning. Students are given adequate time to read, think and inquire independently, which will bring a long-term benefit to their future academic career.

New learning habits. Teachers and parents tend to do too much in the traditional education system, but the recent online teaching offers a new start for self-education. Active students make plans, execute and reflect. From listening to taking notes, from finishing homework to self-disciplinary, learning habits have never been so important before.
