On Saturday, May 13th, the day before Mother's Day in 2023, the First VPA CAS Day will be held.

The purpose of this event is to raise funds for charity and promote students' creativity and community service awareness. The entire event will be accompanied by live music performances and will feature a range of exciting activities, including Rubik's Cube competitions, arts and crafts activities, robotics art, face painting, book sales, as well as making Mother's Day gifts for dear mothers, and so on. The activities are all designed and prepared by teachers, students, and parents voluntarily.

We warmly welcome everyone to actively scan the QR code and join us on May 13th from 12:30 to 14:30 to spend a delightful afternoon with our current students, teachers, and parents, and get a firsthand experience of the distinctive features of IB education.

CAS (Creativity Action Service) is a core component of the IB that encourages students to develop their personal and interpersonal growth by learning through experience and by providing them opportunities to self-determination and collaboration with others.  CAS is an essential counterbalance to the academic rigor of the IB Programme, as it motivates students to show initiative and perseverance and to develop collaboration, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

A meaningful CAS program is a journey of discovery of self and others. For many, CAS is profound and life-changing. 

At VPA, "Service as Action" means "Community Engagement." By actively participating in community service in innovative ways, students will broaden their international perspectives and develop a variety of skills.

After the CAS Day event, from 14:30 to 16:00, we have also prepared a professional family education forum and open day activity for parents.

During this time, Dr. Maggie Koong will be joined by two parent representatives (one from Shenzhen and one from Hong Kong) to discuss parent-child relationships and family education issues with the parents.

Dr. Koong will deliver a speech on "Resilience Building in Students." Following that, the two parent representatives will share their parenting experiences and philosophies, and engage in a panel discussion.

The parent representative from Shenzhen is the Chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of four kindergartens in Shenzhen. Her daughter, Su Yi, graduated from Victoria Kindergarten, and her son, Su Junhao, is currently in the senior class at Victoria Kindergarten. As a Victoria alumna, Su Yi went to Switzerland for middle school at the age of 12, attended high school in the United States at the age of 15, graduated from Johns Hopkins University in the United States with a bachelor's degree, and is currently pursuing a master's degree at the University of Oxford. She is dedicated to international development and has been actively involved in various charitable activities, leading philanthropic organizations from a young age.

The parent representative from Hong Kong, Elaine Wong, is the former Chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Victoria Shanghai Academy (VSA). All four of her children attend VSA. She will address various questions about VSA and provide an in-depth introduction to VSA from a parent's perspective, as well as share her own parenting philosophy.

In addition, Dr. Koong has also invited Professor Nirmala Rao, a world-leading professor from the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong, to deliver an online speech on Responsive Caregiving: Making Time for Play.

Professor Rao and Dr. Koong are friends for years, dedicating themselves to the early childhood education.

Professor Rao has received awards for both research and teaching and has considerable senior management experience. She is the former Dean of both the Faculty of Education and The Graduate School of The University of Hong Kong. She holds a Chair Professorship in Child Development and Education and holds the Serena H C Yang Professor in Early Childhood Development and Education.  She received the first endowed Chair Professorship in the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong. 

She is firmly committed to knowledge exchange and service and has served on many non-profit and professional boards throughout her career. She was a member of the Board of Governors (and Chair of the education sub-committee) of the English Schools Foundation in Hong Kong. Internationally, she regularly provides expertise and consultancy for UNICEF, UNESCO, World Bank and the World Health Organisation.
