This Spring, CISH's Drama Dragons Theatre Company put on a production of the musical Fame Jr!. The musical explores the lives of high school students who attend a prestigious performing arts school in the 1980s. The production featured CISH students both on and off the stage. Many students performed as actors, singers and dancers, but students also took on roles as directors, choreographers, as well as make-up, lighting and costume designers. The musical was an opportunity for CISH students to showcase their amazing talents!

This week the Grade 6 students continued preparing for their final summative assessment on managing the changing environment. Students continued following their actions plans individually to analyze four sources with different perspectives on climate change, power, and privilege.


In Grade 7 I&S the students then been working on the unit on Globalization. The students worked in groups, and then individually, in order to practice the skill of recognizing different perspectives and explaining the implications of different sources.


This week the Grade 8 I&S students have been working on the unit on Global Inequalities with a focus on quality of life factors and issues. The students worked in groups, and then individually, in order to practice the skill of recognizing different perspectives and explaining the implications of different sources.


In Grade 9 I&S class the students are finishing up their final unit looking at the developments and impact of the industrial revolution. The students worked in groups, and then individually, in order to practice the skill of interpreting different perspectives and their implications of different sources.


Grade 10 students have finished their third and final unit of the modern history course. We discussed the ghetto system established by Nazi Germany during the Second World War and how it was used as a temporary measure to hold the Jewish people until a method of implementing the “Final Solution” could be decided upon.

Global Politics

Students in grade 11 global politics completed the final lesson of the human rights unit. We discussed the politicization of human rights and considered how this is a debatable political issue. We examined the case study of Belarus and the 2020 election which resulted in pro-democracy protests across the country.


Psychology

This week the Grade 11 DP Psychology students continued preparing for the end of year summative assessments. The HL students began the week with a summative Paper 3 assessment while SL and NB students worked together to review the biological level of analysis.


Business Management

Grade 11 Students this week have spent some time learning the management tool “Gantt charts”, a project management tool useful for their future studies and in their working lives.New Brunswick students presented on Creativity using the company Dyson as their model and there was some excellent work done.

2 teams of students have made it through to the second round of the IVEY business competition sponsored by AKD Group of which CISH is a part. This is a very tough business competition and we are waiting to hear if they have got through to the finals. We think they have a good chance. They will then present in person in Beijing in July for the top prize, fast track guaranteed entry to Canada’s top business school.

Grade 6 English Language Acquisition - Mr. Kirilenko and Mr. Steinberg

Mr. Kirilenko’s Grade 6’s started the week with designing individual posters. Students in pairs shared their poster ideas, choose a recyclable material they researched, and type up the information they collected over the course of the past week. 

Mr. Steinberg’s Grade 6s focused on creating and refining their final project. This required the learners to create a poster that demonstrates a negative human impact on the earth, and an essay to explain the purpose of the poster and how the elements of the poster communicate the purpose of the poster.


Grade 7 English Language Acquisition - Mr. Du Plooy and Mr. Steinberg

Mr. Du Plooy’s Grade 7s continued their novel study on 'Bridge to Terabithia' this week. Student individually spent time translating and finding the definitions for words they did not know, and as prescribed in their novel study packet. This was followed by a combination of individual, pair and class reading.

Mr. Steinberg’s Grade 7s began by looking at the different gifs that the students created; they were asked to analyze why the gifs are great and what situations you can use them in. Thereafter, as a class, students went over the responses to establish common grammatical mistakes.


Grade 8 English Language Acquisition – Mr. Steinberg and Ms. Bartoszak

This week, Mr. Steinberg’s gained more insight into Steve Jobs and how he created his innovations in communication, by a watching and listening to an informative multimedia text, thus, allowing students to practice their listening skills.

Ms Bartoszak’s Grade 8 students developing their vocabulary knowledge and understanding by completing set tasks. Students then developed their listening skills by watching and listening to a multimodal text about inventions and completed set questions which was then followed up by doing further research about specific inventions that were not mentioned in the text.


Grade 9 English Language Acquisition – Mr. Steinberg and Mr. Dooley

Mr. Steinberg’s Grade 9s spent the week refining their reading and writing skills in preparation for their exam next week. To do this, students explored multiple myths and legends; establishing the conventions, connections and morals of the stories. Furthermore, as a class, students collectively created a piece of writing so they could better understand what will be expected of them.

Grade 10 English Language Acquisition - Mr. Schwab and Mr. Dooley

This week in Mr. Schwab’s Grade 10 class, students have been preparing for an upcoming exam by comparing text types using Venn diagrams. They have also been practicing their ability to determine the content, meaning, purpose, and audience of writing prompts to choose the correct text type.

Mr. Dooley’s Grade 10s started this week investigating the idea of intergenerational trauma and how it is expressed as well as strategies that can be used to minimize its effect. Students practiced some reading and writing tasks similar to our exam to prepare for our exams next week.


Grade 11 & 12 English B Language Acquisition - Mr. Kiefer and Ms. Bartoszak 

At the start of the week, both Mr. Kiefer’s and Ms Bartoszak’s students developed their ATL communication skills as they worked in collaboration focusing on their reading strategies in preparation for their Paper 2 Reading Skills end of year exam. In doing so, students reviewed and shared their strategies using a variety of texts as well as reviewed their conceptual understanding of the text type and content. 

This week, Mr Kiefer’s and Ms Bartoszak’s DP English B (Grade 12) students had their graduation ceremony. All the best for a successful future!

Mathematics Highlights

Grade 6 students focused on making a comparison of different graphs (pie charts, bar charts and linear graphs). Through study, students found that line graphs are the most effective representation for predicting and visualizing trends.


The grade 7 students are continuing their study of statistics. They focusing on Mean, Median, and Mode, and also gained an understanding of Quartiles and Box and Whisker Plots as a part of discrete data collection.


This week, Grade 8 students focused on preparation for a statistics test: Through calculating measures of middle and spread of data sets; drawing box-whisker, cumulative graphs, and then interpreting the results students understood the concepts behind them. Which enabled them to apply these concepts to real-world in solving problems.


Grades 9-11 students are all studying for their upcoming final examinations next week.
