Letter from Academic Head

Mark Johnson

Letter from Academic Head

Alison Phaup

My name is Sarah, and I am 14 years old.

2

Welcome message from Harrovians

Y2 Mesa Wang

Y3 Richie Yu

Y4 Alan Hu

Y5 Athena Yang

Y6 Koey Lin

Y8  Tiger Guo

Y8 Samuel Stephens

Y9 Bobby Li

Y10 Ronghui Kong

Y11 Kylo Gong

Letter from Academic Head

Mark Johnson

Deputy Head of Lower School (Academic)

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Pre-Prep in Harrow Haikou, my name is Mark Johnson and I lead the academic part of our school.

Your children’s teachers will be looking forward to getting to know them, and they will of course guide your children in their academic journey over the forthcoming year. There are though, a small number of things you can do to ensure your children start as they mean to go on. Some of these may seem simple, but from a child’s point of view they can make a big difference.

1

Buy your child their own pencil case (put their name on it) with pens, pencils, an eraser, a ruler, and pencil sharpener. This often gives children a sense of readiness as they enter their lessons for the first time.

2

Put your child’s name and their class on the label of all their clothing – hats, shorts, trousers, dresses, blazers (known at Harrow as ‘bluers’)…everything. These things inevitably go missing during the year for many children and learning time can often be lost trying to locate them, much less so when they are labelled.

3

Ensure that your child has the full uniform ready and prepared. Pride in appearance often leads to pride in work, which always leads to higher academic attainment.

4

Ensure your child has a solid grasp of their basic maths facts. What is appropriate here depends on the age of your child, but there is a good guide here: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/maths/ where you can browse broad statements of age-appropriate knowledge and tips that can guide you to support your child at home.

5

For learners with little or no English, give your child a head-start in knowing their sounds. There is a good resource for this here: https://cdn.oxfordowl.co.uk/2016/05/05/20/22/32/561/20097_content/index.html?id=ae

6

Those who are able may want to join the Oxford Owl for home site: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk. This is an excellent resource which has activities and free books staggered by typical age. Many of the books from here are from the Read, Write, Inc. programme, which we use in school and I would particularly encourage you to be directed to this area.

7

Encourage your child to read English books as much as possible.

I hope that you find these resources useful.

I look forward to meeting you in August.

Welcome

Letter from Academic Head

Alison Phaup

Director of Studies

I hope you are all having an amazing summer wherever you are. If you are lucky enough to be in Hainan, I am sure you are enjoying the sandy beaches, the blue sea and the icy, cold coconuts.

It will not be long now until you join us here at Harrow Haikou and you will probably have lots of questions for us. To make sure you do not forget your questions, make a note of them and bring your note with you on your first day.

We know that many of you will be coming from different school systems and even different countries so you may be worried about joining a new school. All your teachers will be here to help and support you and to make sure you adjust to new ways of learning and even some new subjects.  Many of your teachers have worked in different schools and countries previously so they are experienced in helping students to settle into new ways of learning.

The good news is that there is no specific work you need to do before you join us but there are some practical things you can do to help you to prepare and to make the transition to Harrow Haikou slightly easier:

1

If English is not your first language, try to make sure you speak English for 10 – 15 minutes each day. You could practice helpful phrases for your first day e.g. My name is Sarah, and I am 14 years old.

2

Reading is going to be a big focus for us next year so try to get into good reading habits. 15 minutes of reading a day will help you to develop routines. It will also give you something to chat about on your first day.

3

Get yourself organised with a pencil case, with pens, a pencil, a ruler and eraser, a calculator and a water bottle. These are all essential to making a smooth start and you will probably use most of them on your first day.

4

If you have a new laptop or tablet, make sure you know your passwords and that you have a charger to bring to school. You will use your device in lessons so it is important that you can access it.

5

Pack your list of questions in your bag for the first day so we can answer them for you.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to ask for help if you need it. If you forget your pencil case or bring the wrong book or do not understand a piece of homework, ask questions; someone will help you.

On your first day, we will make sure you know where to go and show you around the campus. We will also give you your timetable and make sure you can access all the information you need.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Upper School at the end of the summer.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Welcome message from Harrovians

Y2 Mesa Wang

Hello new students! At the beginning of the new term, you may have to spend a week familiarising yourself with the classrooms, the timetable, and the rules of the school. Just remember to listen to your teacher and don't lose your way! If you are nervous on the first day, I will give you my support!

Y3 Richie Yu

During the summer holiday, you can watch the school videos online to get familiar with our school in advance. If you can't find the classroom, remember to ask the teacher and me. Also, remember to bring your sportswear and sports shoes to school, we will change our full school uniforms into sports suits for PE lessons.

Y4 Alan Hu

We are very lucky to be at Harrow, we have a much more friendly and international atmosphere and our students are great to work with. You are all very welcome here! You'll make lots of good friends here. It's not just about education, it's also about the friendship of your fellow students.

My advice before you come is to be prepared to learn English, you may not be used to it when you first arrive, but you will have to persevere and learn to be independent during the transition days.

Y5 Athena Yang

Hello, new students! You can definitely make a lot of friends at school on your first day. Don't be shy when you introduce yourself on your first day and let others get to know you better. If you are not sure about something, ask your teacher. Don't be naughty and follow the guidance from your teachers when participating in House events.

Y6 Koey Lin

Hello new students! When you come to school you will find that school life is so rich that it may distract you, but you must organise your time to study hard. You have to learn English well, and you also have to do sports.

Y8  Tiger Guo

To the new students I would say, focus on your studies and try to get along with the students across the grades. You can learn from your older classmates about the things you will be exposed to, and learn about energy and courage from the younger grades. Make sure to be active in the House events! Talk to your tutor regularly.

Y8 Samuel Stephens

On the first day of school, every new student is assigned a buddy who will familiarise you with all that Harrow Haikou has to offer, and it's important to remember who he/she is! On the first day of classes, there will be times when you can't find your classroom, so don't be shy and ask your teachers and fellow students for help, they are all very willing to help!

House activities are also an opportunity for you to quickly integrate into Harrow Haikou, and this is a good time to talk to your seniors.

Bobby Li Y9

When you come to school you will find that it is a great place to make friends, to let yourself go and express yourself! We have a great environment, so do your best to use everything the school has to offer you.

The first thing you should do when you come to school is to make friends and get to know your classmates so they can help you settle in.

Ronghui Kong Y10

In my experience, my advice to new students is to ask the teacher a lot of questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions in class, and ask for help from your TA. You can be shy, but you must have courage. Come on, believe in yourself.

Y11 Kylo Gong

Hello to all the students I haven't met before, I am very lucky to be studying and living in the same school as you in the future. Harrow is an inclusive and supportive school where you can be yourself and always do the right thing. At the same time, you can also explore yourself in the varied activities and classes, learn more knowledge and talents, and shine in the school!
