语言学院跨学科主题式课程,让英语学习充满乐趣和意义 LEH Foshan 2023 Language Academy Recap

2023年佛山霍利斯语言学院顺利结束,回顾这一周的主题学习之旅,我们相信这段经历会给学生们留下难忘回忆和持久的积极影响。我们认为教学应该是一个探索的过程,并在过程中赋予学习的意义和乐趣。我们语言学院所采用的主题教学法正是这个理念的体现和践行,让学生们在提高英语能力的同时,加深对周围世界认识和了解。



通过让学生沉浸在主题学习体验中,我们将语言学习与现实世界的语境完美结合在一起。这种方法能让学生们将英语技能与现实场景联系起来,激发他们的好奇心和对学习的热情。每个主题都是通向不同学科的窗口,进而鼓励学生们跨学科思考,培养对知识的全面理解。从沉醉在迷人的童话世界,到发掘古代历史和当代概念,今年的语言学院是一次精彩绝伦的探索和拓展之旅。


关键阶段二 低年级组

杰克与魔豆:探索魔法世界


学生们一起探索了《杰克与魔豆》的奇幻世界,在这一周时间里,他们沉浸在魔豆与巨人的充满创造力的世界,在提升英语水平的同时,也培养了好奇心。阅读课上,老师带领孩子们探讨课文的重点内容,并通过朗诵加深他们对字母和读音的印象,学生们也运用“故事地图”工具来复述故事,增强了他们理解能力。孩子们还学习了基础的创意写作,在阅读了改编故事《吉尔和魔豆》的启发下,开始创作自己版本的魔豆故事。孩子们还尝试了用木偶戏的方式来演绎这个故事,并且种下自己的魔豆和观察它们的生长,进而也学习了一些科学方面的知识。这次沉浸式的学习激发了学生们的学习热情,帮助他们在语言学习、创造力和个人成长方面获得进步。



关键阶段二 高年级组

庞贝古城之旅:揭开历史的面纱


在 "庞贝古城之旅 "中,学生们通过研究古罗马和庞贝古城的不同资料,学习古罗马的基本知识,在历史探索中提升英语能力和研究技能。课程活动包括阅读、历史研究、模拟考古和创意故事写作,在这过程中学生们深入了解了庞贝古城时期的日常生活和那场著名的火山爆发悲剧。学生们发挥创意编写了“庞贝古城逃离日记”,通过写作熟练掌握新词汇以及描述性写作方式,并提升了资料搜集的技能。在美术课上,学生们制作了古罗马生活场景的模型。最后他们根据这一周的学习内容,编撰了一本庞贝古城介绍手册,将他们的研究成果融会贯通,同时也开启了自己内在的小作家潜力。



关键阶段三

广告世界:探索现代社会景观


关键阶段三的学生们沉浸在 "广告世界 "中,深入研究有效沟通、品牌意识和消费心理等知识。通过实践活动,他们掌握了品牌分析、媒体策略、色彩心理学和说服性写作。然后学生们精心设计自己的广告计划,练习公开演讲,完善演讲技巧,提升他们的沟通影响力技巧。这周的课程活动不仅丰富了学生的词汇,还使他们能够自信地运用语言艺术,对广告和传播领域有了更深刻的认识。随后,学生们将所学应用于实践,在艺术课上制作了很多吸睛的麦片包装盒。



关键阶段四

自我认同:身份探索


关键阶段四的学生开始深入探索“自我身份”,研究个性、文化和个人成长。他们学习了描述个性的有关词汇,并掌握了一些高级语法,包括现在完成时、比较级和最高级形容词。学生们还讨论了我们是否会在讲述另外一种语言的时候呈现出另一个性格等的有趣话题。日常会话练习也提高了他们的口语表达能力。在美术课上,学生们创作了自己的全家福肖像画,通过创意视觉来表达他们的独特身份。这些课程和活动有助于提升学生们的交流能力,培养了他们更深刻的自我意识,并促进了他们在社会环境中对他人的理解和同理心。



课堂之外

每日课外活动:探索兴趣爱好


在语言学院项目中,学生们参加了一系列的课外活动,从球场上的拼搏到地理探究,从艺术创作到桑巴音乐,我们的学生在课外活动时间尽情发挥自己的兴趣和才能。丰富多彩的课外活动促进了学生的全面发展和成长,丰富了整个语言学院的学习体验。




在又一年语言学院成功结束之际,我们由衷感谢我们的老师、英语教学支持专家、教学助理和艺术助教组成的合作团队。我们的学生不仅提升了英语语言水平,而且培养了独立思考能力、创造性解决问题能力和自信交流能力。现在,他们已经掌握了必要的基础能力迎接新学年的到来,我们也期待在新学年看到他们更大的进步。


为了庆祝本周取得的成绩,每个学生都获得了参与证书。部分学生额外获得了努力奖、进步奖和优秀奖。

As the 2023 LEH Foshan Language Academy comes to a close, we reflect on a week filled with captivating thematic learning experiences that have left a lasting impact on our students. We believe that education should be a voyage of discovery, inspiring students to engage with their learning in meaningful and enjoyable ways. The thematic approach adopted in our Language Academy embodies this philosophy, allowing students to not only improve their language skills but also to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.



By immersing students in thematic learning experiences, we seamlessly integrate language acquisition with real-world contexts. This approach enables learners to connect their language skills to authentic scenarios, sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm. Each theme serves as a window into various subjects, encouraging cross-disciplinary thinking and fostering a holistic understanding of knowledge. From delving into the realms of enchanting fairy tales to unearthing the treasures of ancient history and contemporary concepts, this year's Language Academy has been an incredible journey of exploration, empowerment, and enrichment.


Lower Key Stage 2

A World of Enchantment:

"Jack and the Beanstalk"


Our youngest students embarked on a captivating journey through "Jack and the Beanstalk." Immersed in a week of magic beans, towering giants, and creativity, they honed language skills while nurturing curiosity. Reading sessions allowed children to explore not only their key text, but also related reading to hone their understanding of  letters and sounds, while a story map enhanced comprehension. Children also learned the foundations of creative writing, by beginning to write their own version of “Jack and the Beanstalk”, inspired by a class reading of “Jill and the Beanstalk”. A puppet show brought the tale alive and planting beansprouts with diaries helped develop students’ science skills. This immersive adventure ignited a passion for learning, combining language development, creativity, and holistic growth in one enchanting experience.



Upper Key Stage 2

Unveiling the Past:

"Journey to Pompeii"


In "Journey to Pompeii," Upper Key Stage 2 students voyaged into Ancient Rome by exploring different sources based around ancient Rome and Pompeii, seamlessly intertwining language fluency with historical understanding and research skills. Through reading, historical research, archaeological simulations and creative storytelling, learners explored the daily life and tragic eruption that preserved Pompeii forever. Students’ vocabulary grew stronger, research skills improved, and descriptive language developed as students reconstructed the past by writing diary entries about escaping from Pompeii. By crafting Roman dioramas in Art, they brought antiquity to life artistically. They brought this research together by writing their own non-fiction informational texts based around their learning during the week – and also developing their voices as young authors.



Key Stage 3

Navigating the Modern Landscape:

"The World of Advertising"


Key Stage 3 students immersed themselves in the “World of Advertising,” delving into effective communication, brand identity, and consumer psychology. Through hands-on activities, they mastered brand analysis, media strategies, colour psychology, and persuasive writing. Crafting their own ad plans, practising public speaking, and perfecting pitch skills, students honed practical techniques for impactful communication. This immersive journey not only enriched vocabulary but also empowered students to navigate the language of persuasion confidently, fostering a deeper appreciation for the realm of advertising and communication. Students then applied what they learn to practice by creating some eye-catching cereal boxes in the Art lesson.



Key Stage 4

Exploring Identity:

"Self-Identity"


Key Stage 4 students embarked on an insightful "Self-Identity" exploration, delving into individuality, culture, and personal growth. They gained vocabulary on personality and mastered advanced grammar, including present perfect tense, comparative and superlative adjectives. Discussions delved into the intriguing topic of personality shifts while speaking another language. Daily conversation practices elevated their oral expressive skills. Family portraits in Art lessons encouraged the visual representation of their unique identities, intertwining creativity with self-discovery. These lessons and activities enhanced their communication abilities, fostering deeper self-awareness and promoting understanding of others within a social context.



Beyond the Classroom

Embracing 

Extracurricular Exploration


During the Language Academy programme, students enthusiastically participated in a range of extracurricular activities (ECAs). From heart-pounding matches on the football field to strategic games of rounders, geography investigations, artistic endeavours, and the rhythm of Samba, our learners indulged their interests and talents beyond traditional learning. These diverse ECAs nurtured holistic development, balancing language proficiency with personal passions, fostering well-rounded growth and enriching the Language Academy experience.




As we bid farewell to another successful Language Academy, we extend our gratitude to our teachers and a team of dedicated English Language Learning (ELL) specialists, Teaching Assistants, and Art Technician, whose commitment to fostering a safe and engaging learning environment has made this experience possible. Our students have not only refined their language skills but have also grown as critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and confident communicators. We look forward to witnessing the continued progress and achievements of our talented learners, now they have the foundational skills necessary to help them thrive here at LEH Foshan.


To celebrate the achievements made in this week, every child received a participation certificate. Extra awards were given to children for Effort, Improvement, and Acheivement.
