Art-mindfulness

World Mental Health Day is celebrated on 10 October each year, an initiative by the World Health Organisation to raise awareness of mental health globally, dispel misconceptions surrounding mental health disorders, and create a positive climate for mental health promotion.

In response to the World

Mental Health Day initiative,

AISL Harrow Hengqin

has been organising a series of

thematic activities

on the 10th of October every year

to actively involve all students

and teachers in building a warm

and supportive Harrow community

 that cares about mental health.

All students are encouraged to "speak up"

when they have a problem

and discuss mental health topics.

Kirsty Lowery

Deputy Head

Harrow Hengqin has always promoted the importance of having good mental health to support students in their studies. This year’s WHO campaign theme is Mental Heath is a Universal Human Right. This means everyone anywhere in the world is entitled to help if they have a mental health illness. At the second Mental Health Day at Harrow Hengqin, we raised awareness of having good mental health through Music, Art and Exercise therapies. Hopefully more events like these will allow our students to understand that it is ok to not be ok and to “speak out” if they need help. Together we will continue to remove the stigma surrounding mental health illness.

A Healing Musical Journey

Studies show that listening to music has a positive effect on your mood. It makes you feel happier and less anxious while giving you energy. Music helps to stimulate the brain to produce dopamine. A chemical called a neurotransmitter which helps the body to feel good. For WMHD,the music department devised a music making session for the students.

Rhythmic Pattern

The music teacher asked the Harrow students to sit in a row with djembes (African drums) in their hands. The teacher started to play a rhythm and then cues the next student by "clapping", and when he or she heard the clapping, the student started to improvise his or her own rhythm and passes it on to the next student by clapping.

Boomwhackers

A three-octave boomwhackers, containing 36 notes, was held by each student as a piano keyboard and together they played the famous music from the film "The Sound of Music", "Do Re Mi". The students felt happy and positive emotions in the music.

Imaginative Artistic Creation

Doing an art activity is known to reduce stress levels and relieve anxiety. Our theme was Bird Song, as a recent study shows that listening to bird songs alleviates feelings of anxiety and paranoia. During this session students drew pictures of birds while listening to bird songs that produced a calming and relaxing environment.

Under the guidance of the art teacher, Harrow students listened to the beautiful songs of the birds, imagined their postures and body shapes, and used their imagination to draw the birds, which were either soaring or swooping in different forms. The students relaxed both physically and mentally after this unique lesson on birdsong.

Art-mindfulness

To remember this unforgettable moment, the work produced will contribute to a wellbeing display in our school.

Mood-boosting Physical Exercise

Doing exercise causes the brain to release “feel good” chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin which help to improve your mood. In this physical activity, House teams competed against each other in some fun games that involved physical exercise and teamwork. Teamwork is known to reduce stress levels and boost morale resulting in better mental health.

Lower School students did some cardio exercise to begin that was followed by a series of fun games of handball, bench ball and dodgeball.

Upper School students played several team games of Throwing and Cups and Saucers in which students needed to think and use a variety of skills to meet the challenges that were set. There is nothing like being active with a little healthy competition to boost our mood.

Assembly of Psychological Knowledge

Apart from arranging the above activities, Harrow Hengqin also held an Assembly of Psychological Knowledge, which was hosted by Harrow Hengqin's Wellbeing Ambassadors, to give students a better understanding of mental health.

Wellbeing Ambassadors

The Wellbeing Ambassadors are Harrow Hengqin's unique student leaders and are our "Little Angels". They organise and assist in a variety of activities, focusing on the learning and living conditions of students, acting as listeners and supporters, and enhancing the sense of well-being in the Harrow Hengqin community.

During the assembly, the Wellbeing Ambassadors introduced seven simple steps to improve your own mental health. Come along and learn!

1.Adopting an upright posture.

It's time to stretch out those muscles and stand like you mean it. According to a study, operator posture can have a positive effect and reduce tiredness.

2. Practice positive thinking

Research continues to show that your thoughts about yourself strongly affect how you feel. Practice using words that promote feelings of self-worth and personal power. So instead of saying, “I was horrible at the math test”, use positive words like “I'll study harder next time and then I'll do better on the next test”.

3. Take a walk in nature

A study found that merely 5 minutes of contact with the natural world improves mood, human health, self-esteem, and general emotional wellbeing. Time for a nice walk in the park to enjoy the blue sky, green grass, fresh air, and sunshine.

4.Hug someone

Sometimes we just need a hug. Hugging is a great way to release and perhaps increase your self-esteem and optimism in the process. According to a study, scientists identified for the first time a particular hormone linked to optimism, self-esteem and mastery which might be produced when you hug.

5.Exercise

Exercise is not only important for our physical health, but our mental well-being as well. Regular exercise releases endorphins which make us happy naturally and enhance your sense of wellbeing.

6.Get enough sleep

We need a good rest at night to recharge with enough energy for the next day. Not getting enough sleep every day has been shown to negatively affect your mental health.

7. Keep a gratitude journal

Expressing gratitude can work wonders for our mental wellbeing. Gratitude has been linked to increased happiness, mental health, and improved wellbeing according to psychologists. The best research method to increase feelings of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal or write a daily gratitude list, write down something you're thankful for, no matter how grand or simple.

Mental Health = Well-being?

World Mental Health Day is about raising awareness of mental health and promoting positive change in everyone's mental health. It's also an opportunity to talk about mental health, how we should focus on it and how important it is to seek help if you're experiencing difficulties. The World Health Organisation defines mental health as a state of well-being where everyone can realise their potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and contribute to their community. Mental health is also a state of emotional well-being that affects our daily lives, how we feel, how we interact with others, and even the way we think and see things. We should all be concerned about our mental health.

At Harrow Hengqin,

we want everyone to focus on their mental health,

to achieve a sense of well-being in their school life,

and to find the key to long-term happiness.

The first step is to "speak up" and

don't be afraid to ask for help.
