In the fast-paced urban life, we often find ourselves trapped in our own small worlds, where connections between people seem to be getting weaker.

To break this status quo, Tianlai, a student at LWS, initiated a unique project. This project aims to use the school's public spaces to create a new kind of interactive venue, fostering informal communication and sincere connections among people.

Tianlai said, "While preparing for college applications, I deeply reflected on my campus life over the past few years. I realized that, though I've learned a lot academically, the most valuable gain has been the interactions with classmates and teachers of different ages and backgrounds. These exchanges broadened my horizons, introduced new ways of thinking, and left me with fond memories of shared experiences.

On campus, we have students, teachers, teachers' families, security guards, aunts, and other staff members. However, apart from frequent interactions between teachers and students, communication among other groups is relatively limited. If there were a dedicated space to encourage more interactions between these diverse groups, young students could learn valuable experiences from the elders, and the older generation could understand the new thoughts of the younger ones. Such interpersonal interactions would benefit everyone on campus.

With these ideas in mind, I decided to conduct some background research for this design project. Therefore, I planned to visit the new campus for field research, hoping to gain inspiration from the students and teachers there to improve my design proposal."

Holding these thoughts, Tianlai came to the Suzhou campus from Shanghai, guided by two younger students, and experienced every corner of the campus.

Tianlai carefully inquired about the younger students' schooling experiences, social interaction patterns, and their social circles. Passing by each public area, he would stop to take photos, contemplating the future possibilities in his mind.

Tianlai believes that designing a space for a campus accommodating thousands of people, while meeting their needs, is undoubtedly a huge challenge. This requires not only considering the functionality of the space but also the needs of different groups within the campus for public spaces, the actual condition of the campus, and the distribution of people. He kept asking himself: How can we maximally include all groups to make everyone feel comfortable in this space? How to design for convenience so that everyone can easily access this space? Additionally, sustainability issues need to be addressed, such as how to utilize clean energy? And how to adapt to the rapid changes in technology and needs?

Can a campus be only a place for reading and learning? The most precious years of our youth are almost entirely spent on campus. The terraces used for relaxation, the sunken plazas for resting, and the libraries where we immerse ourselves in study are all waiting to be endowed with new meanings.

Imagine a space where students, teachers, and all staff members would enjoy being a part of.

In this space, we:

Break Boundaries: Eliminate traditional boundaries between teachers and students, where everyone is an equal friend.

Creative Setup: Use art installations and interactive facilities to make the public space warm and creative.

Regular Themed Activities: Organize various themed events, such as music nights and poetry readings, encouraging everyone to communicate in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Story Sharing: Encourage everyone to share their stories to enhance mutual understanding and respect.

Enhance Social Interaction: Provide an informal social platform to increase interaction among groups.

Cultural Integration: Enhance the cultural diversity and inclusivity within the campus. LWS has students and teachers from around the world, and their different backgrounds and cultures urgently need face-to-face communication and exchange to reduce differences and enhance understanding and appreciation.

The "Confluence Space" project is not only an innovative attempt but also an exploration and growth of the spirit. It will help teachers and students of Meigao School to cross traditional boundaries, establish deeper and more sincere connections, and jointly build a warmer and more harmonious learning and living environment.

Students at LWS are not just passive recipients of knowledge, but active participants in the progress of the campus and in the creation of new relationships. Applauding this kind of 'think outside the box' mindset, LWS is proud to have such students. The seed planted by them today will one day blossom into the ideal flower of education.
