Lead the Change You Want to See!

Laurina X G8

Sweety T G8

Erica D G7

Quentin L G8

Thea L G10

Joyce L G7

Michelle L G5

At Harrow Hengqin, it is our educational vision to cultivate outstanding leadership attributes in our students, as so to empower them to lead fulfilling lives and make a positive impact on the world around them. To this end, we have developed a wide range of learning programs and activities, from weekly whole-school assemblies and CCA, to the annual Leadership Week and Bilingual Speech Competition... Our students demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities.

Yet there is no better way to develop

 leadership attributes on campus

 than to get personally involved

 in student organizations

 and make your voice heard.

Lead the Change You Want to See!

Harrow Hengqin has a wide variety of student organizations that offer different dimensions of leadership positions, allowing students to participate in different aspects of school management and community service, and to develop leadership attributes. This year’s student organizations have also undergone new changes -- in addition to the Student Council, House Captains, Boarding Captions, Wellbeing Ambassadors and other student organizations that students are already familiar with, Sustainability Ambassadors is our new organization that aims to promote sustainable development.”

In addition, this year's student organization elections were even more ceremonial and competitive. At the beginning of the new semester, each student organization opened positions for students to apply for. Everyone actively signed up and, after filling out forms, interviews, and election speeches, among other tests, each student organization welcomed new members.

Candidates who successfully passed the selection process had been awarded badges and certificates. They had also signed a “contract” committing to uphold the Harrow values of Courage, Honour, Humility, and Fellowship, lead the organization, and contribute to the school and the community .

The student union is the most “serious” organization at Harrow Hengqin. All members of the student union are senior students and serve as an important link between students and faculty. They are committed to making the school better, participating in school work discussions, expressing suggestions and opinions, and are characterized by rigor, thoughtfulness, problem-solving skills. This can be seen from the student union’s election application form.

What aspects of the school will develop through your efforts?

What aspects will you start with to carry out the work of the student council? And what is your reason?

The six members of the student council are student advocates and mediators. One of their responsibilities is to provide necessary assistance when the school is hosting events and receiving important guests. They periodically meet with the school leadership team to communicate the opinions of their peers.

Unlike the calm and rigorous selection process of the Student Council, the selection of House Captions is the “star competition”. After all, the elected House Captains and Vice-Captains are like magnets in the House, leading the members to actively participate in the activities of the House, win the House Competition and the annual House Cup by showcasing their strong inspirational power!

The newly appointed House Captains have been organizing meetings to discuss how they can lead their respective Houses to win in various House competitions. Secondly, they have been communicating with subject teachers to increase the House Points for their House members in activities or projects related to holistic education.

During their time as House Captains, students practice and develop skills in leadership, communication, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving.

Upon enrollment, all students become members of a House, and work alongside peers of all ages to organize House-related activities, foster strong communication and collaboration skills, and strive for achievements and recognitions in the name of their respective Houses.

The Wellbeing Ambassadors is a new student organization that was established last year, and also welcomed its second year of members this year.

The Wellbeing Ambassadors, a student organization established last year, has welcomed its second year of members this year. Unlike the two student organizations mentioned earlier, the Wellbeing Ambassadors embody the qualities of a radiant sun, exuding warmth and thoughtfulness for all. Contrary to the common misconception that leaders should exhibit strength and bravery, the Wellbeing Ambassadors advocate for the rare leadership trait of being “kind and loving” and attentively listening to others.

The new Wellbeing Ambassadors will continue to promote physical and mental health and well-being, raise awareness of mental health, be good listeners for students and give effective feedback. Furthermore, the Wellbeing Ambassadors have proposed the creation of a calming room in the school, providing students with a cozy and brief respite space.

Harrow Hengqin is a British boarding school, where boarding life is a crucial component of Harrovians' educational experience. As boarders reside in a communal living environment, they learn to appreciate and coexist with others. Taking on the role of Boarding Captains cultivates a profound sense of responsibility, instilling the value of considering others' needs, while communication with fellow boarders and staff further strengthens students' social skills.

The Boarding Captains are responsible for overseeing and ensuring adherence to the school's rules and regulations among the boarding members, including personal hygiene habits, study and rest schedules, and other related matters. Additionally, they serve as an effective communication channel between boarding students and the school administration, conveying the concerns and needs of their peers. They exhibit genuine concern for the boarding students' welfare, and offer assistance in resolving difficulties, ultimately enhancing the boarding div's cohesion.

The Sustainability Ambassadors, a new student organization in this academic year, aims to promote environmental protection information both inside and outside the school, to advocate sustainable lifestyles, motivate fellow students and teachers to participate in environmental protection actions, and cultivate students' sense of responsibility and leadership for environmental protection and sustainable development.

Poster by Sustainability Ambassador

The Sustainability Ambassadors are now doing programs on energy conservation and waste reduction throughout the school by putting up posters encouraging students and staff to reduce the waste of resources. They are also promoting the reduction of the amount of waste on campus and the conservation of resources by sorting, recycling, and reusing waste. They also promote environmental protection and sustainability by using the school's radio station to broadcast recorded radio programs.

Sustainability Passport

Focusing on

Global Sustainability

Each Upper School student has a "sustainability passport" that contains the three major themes of the school year: climate (November to January), reducing inequality (February to April), and sustainable cities and communities (May to July). As long as the subject teachers cover these themes in their lessons, whether by measuring things, making posters or doing experiments, etc., students can earn corresponding stamps by demonstrating diligent learning and outstanding performance.

 17 Sustainable

 Development Goals

The three main themes of the sustainability passport are linked to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . The 17 SDGs are a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future for all. The goals present the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, as well as peace and justice. These goals are interconnected and aim to leave no one behind, with the United Nations committed to achieving each goal by 2030.

03

Student Organizations Working Together

To Make The School Better

Each student organization has a different role to play. And this school year, under the guidance of Ms. Jana Perold, our teacher as well as leadership & service coordinator,

the organizations will coalesce and work together to lead and serve to the best of their ability. Every Monday in SCA, she brings the various student organizations together to review the progress of the previous week and plan for the upcoming week's tasks.

Last week's CCA was led by various student organizations on the topic of climate, one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

They went to the six Harrow Houses respectively to lead other students in identifying behaviors that are detrimental to climate sustainability in the school and to provide suggestions. This helps them to organize information in a coherent and systematic manner, enhancing their confidence in public speaking.

Student organization members are leaders and servants. These young "leaders" are now assisting the staff by keeping order and caring for others during break time and lunch. This allows them to find meaning in their roles, and to take responsibility for the community. During open events on campus, they have also been given the opportunity to offer their assistance.

Harrow education promotes the six leadership attributes, and we find that the student organizations mentioned above all subtly incorporate and echo those attributes in different dimensions and at different levels. Despite emphasizing different attributes, when these little "leaders" gather together, they shine like stars in the night sky.

Making a positive contribution to community

Applying knowledge with compassion

Solving problems collaboratively

Solving problems creatively

Making just and responsible choices

Facing challenges with determination

Having provided the world with

countless leaders for over 400 years,

Harrow has a unique understanding

of leadership attributes.

Through these student organizations,

we can see that Harrow students

 are taking small steps

towards making a difference for others,

the school, and the planet. We look forward to them standing out and achieving excellence,

while also leading the way for the future.
