——Richard Gerver

A large part of the IB MYP is giving students a safe learning environment to express their voices, choices, and ownership to create authentic and positive changes in the world. These future leaders learn these skills throughout their IB journey and should inspire hope in all of us for a better world.

"To be successful you must respect failure and understand the power that not knowing can give you. Very few ever truly aim high enough or realise their potential. The really successful never stop trying, never stop making mistakes and never feel that they have got all the answers. The joy is in the journey. " - Richard Gerver

In Unit 2, Grade Six English students dived into the Statement of Inquiry of 'The human impact on the environment is connected to human purpose and empathy.' Students explored several connections between environmental issues and human activities throughout their learning journey before taking actions for positive changes in daily life.

In the last week of the unit, students showcased their learning by combining their persuasive writing skills with environmental issues. They expressed their voice by writing persuasive letters to the school administration and OCAC community, identifying ways the school can become more environmentally friendly. Topics ranged in scope from recycling to food waste, reducing plastic use, and caring for local plants and animals by reducing littering. Students took pride in their work by investigating problems, interviewing staff and students, researching and referencing several sources to aid their writings credibility. An essential skill in academic honesty that will prove helpful in the future.

Academic head of school Dr. Renata McFarland recognised and commended this agency by swiftly responding to the letters of individual students who wrote to her, organising meetings between student groups and cafeteria management. A key area identified by students as an area that the school could improve. We are looking forward to the next steps G6s will take to reduce our carbon footprint in the world.

Students also published their work and environmental crisis campaign videos on the sharing platform Padlet to make a bigger impact which is now displayed prominently in the school.
