On November 7, our IGCSE - A level Computer Science group of SUIS Pudong Xueye and Sanlin campuses had a field trip to the Shanghai Planetarium. It was a fascinating and enlightening experience that not only provided the students with a deeper understanding of the connection between science and technology but also stimulated their interest and enthusiasm for using computer science and technology to explore the universe.
Unveiling the Mysteries of the Universe: During the visit to the planetarium, the students had the opportunity to delve into the mysteries of the cosmos. For the computer science group, this was a unique experience as they explored the close relationship between computer science and astronomy. They also learned about the applications of computer science in astronomy, including data analysis, simulations, and interstellar navigation. They saw real-life examples of the use of input and output devices such as cameras in the space rovers and projectors that displayed simulations of particles and the blackhole.
Exhibits and Interactive Experiences: The students were captivated by the exhibits on constellations, planets, and space exploration. These interactive experiences helped them better grasp the concepts of astronomy while reminding them of the pivotal role of computer science.
IMAX Film: Watching the IMAX film "The Heaven" in the Ultra HD Circular-Screen Cinema was a breath-taking experience. The film not only showcased the spectacular landscapes of the universe but also made them ponder the significance of computer simulations and data analysis in space exploration. It felt like the group was on an actual journey through space. A-level students quickly related the patterns and motion of the particles to the idea of recursion, a topic taught in class.
In summary, the visit to the Shanghai Planetarium not only deepened students’ understanding of the universe but also fuelled their enthusiasm for computer science. The group considers themselves fortunate to have been part of this event and hopes for more opportunities in the future to continue exploring the fascinating world of science and technology.
