At the beginning of the new school year, King's Pre-Prep introduced several exciting changes, one of which is the reinforcement of our teaching staff. Each class now has a strong team comprising of a Homeroom teacher, a Co-teacher, a bilingual teaching assistant, and a life teacher. King's is committed to creating an inspiring and joyful learning environment for its students, allowing them to gain both knowledge and skills while thriving in a caring and supportive environment.

Last week, we introduced the teaching teams for our K3 classes and the activities that they have planned for the new school year. Today, let's introduce the teaching teams for our K2 classes, and find out about the wonderful worlds of the Owl Class and the Fox Class.

K21 Owl Class

As a unique and mysterious creature, the owl has always been renowned for its wisdom and insight. K21 has chosen the owl as the class symbol, hoping to encourage children's thirst for knowledge and nurture critical thinking by incorporating the owl into their daily learning and activities. Teachers will cultivate the children's curiosity through enriching activities and enhance their motivation to learn. At the same time, teachers will emphasise class sentiment and teamwork, ensuring that every child feels at home in their class.

When children are in K2, their cognitive, social, and emotional abilities are gradually maturing, and they have a stronger sense of self-awareness. Although the school year has just begun, the children's presence has already brought great joy and happiness to the teachers. The teachers speak of how well their returning students have re-adapted to school life, and of how quickly their new students overcame their anxiety about the new environment and smoothly integrated into their new groups, establishing new friendships. Equally important, each child is gradually becoming aware of the rules at school.

The owl also represents K21's pursuit of wisdom, individuality, curiosity, and teamwork. This term, K21's teachers have carefully planned a series of fun activities aimed at providing children with diverse learning experiences. These activities include park explorations, science experiments, arts and crafts workshops, themed learning weeks, and more. In addition, there is a special "show and tell" time every Friday, where children can bring their favourite items from home to share, whether that be toys, photos, or picture books, based on the weekly theme. Through these thoughtfully designed activities, children will experience unforgettable moments and enrich their knowledge and skills in various fields.

Benedict Raikes

K21 Homeroom Teacher

Mr. Raikes is from the United Kingdom and is passionate about music and sport. Mr. Raikes previously taught swimming, sailing, and violin courses in the UK, before coming to China in 2019. He has four years of teaching experience with children under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. He firmly believes that young children’s learning should be rooted in interest and play, as children learn best in a comfortable and joyful environment. In Mr. Raikes's classroom, every activity is designed based on the children's interests. His goal is to create a positive environment where children can look forward to school every day and cultivate a lifelong love for learning.

Catherine He

K21 Co-teacher

Ms. He possesses a strong educational background, having graduated with a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and earned a Master's degree in Education from Hong Kong Baptist University. Ms. He was a class teacher at a local Australian kindergarten for two years and taught at a well-known bilingual kindergarten in China for three years. She excels in communicating and interacting with children, identifying their individual characteristics during interactions, and providing personalised guidance while building trust and understanding. Furthermore, Ms. He is highly proficient in designing all kinds of curriculum activities. This year, she will be responsible for teaching Chinese, mathematics, and art to K21. In her Chinese classes, Ms. He will teach lessons on Chinese traditional culture, solar terms, festivals, simple Chinese characters, and ancient poems, among other topics. Ms. He aims to instil cultural confidence in the children so that they can proudly embrace their own culture while being global citizens.

K22 Fox Class

The fox is a clever and versatile animal, known for its cuteness, wit, liveliness, and sharp senses of vision, smell, and hearing. K22 has chosen the fox as their class symbol, hoping it can inspire adaptability, nurture critical thinking, and teach children to appreciate the wonders of the natural world.

The Fox Class, K22, has two fox stuffed animal toys named "Foxy" and "Mr. Fox". These two foxes are not only companions for the children but also for their teachers. During a free exploration period, two children in K22 had a disagreement. Foxy and Mr. Fox started a conversation about how sad they felt when they saw the children not sharing. They really wished the children could be good friends. When the upset children heard what the foxes said, they found it very interesting and reasonable. So, the two children apologised to eachother and became friends again. The wisdom and friendliness of the foxes inspired the children and helped them learn how to get along harmoniously.

In the new term, to better understand each child's daily life and enhance their expressive abilities, K22 has set up a daily question wall. Every day, teachers ask students a yes/no question to help everyone get to know each other better.

Additionally, Thursdays are Toy Days in K22, where children can bring their favourite toys to school to share with their classmates. This is not only an opportunity to showcase their belongings but also to boost their confidence and communication skills. The class mascot, Foxy, goes home with a well-behaved student every Friday. On the following Monday, teachers encourage the children to share their experiences with Foxy with their teachers and peers, helping develop their logical thinking and expressive abilities.

Zahné Nel

K22 Homeroom Teacher

Mrs. Nel arrived in China in 2019 and has held positions as an English teacher and class teacher at two renowned international schools. This experience has given her valuable insight into early childhood education and Chinese families. Her diverse work experience aligns with Mrs. Nel's wide-ranging interests, and she places great emphasis on nurturing children's individual interests and talents. Through various creative methods, she ensures that her classroom is always both fun and educational. Mrs. Nel firmly believes that every child is unique and should be educated according to their individual needs to promote their development.

Daisy Luo

K22 Co-teacher

Ms. Luo boasts a strong professional background, having completed her undergraduate studies in Education at Sichuan Normal University and earned a Master's degree in English Education from Deakin University in Australia. She has undergone immersive professional training in the British school system and has worked at several international schools, making her an experienced educator. She joined King's Pre-Prep in 2019, and her clear understanding of the King's curriculum and the learning characteristics of students of this age group makes her a great asset to the school. She aims to spark the children's imagination, cultivate their creativity, and promote critical thinking through various activities.
