The twins Lucas Zhan and Louis Zhan secured the first and second positions respectively in Group B of the Shenzhen Golf Open Junior Tourment - Stage 11.
Amidst the information about the tournament, we were particularly pleased to hear this news. These twins are currently BMH S7 students who we are able to observe hurrying about campus daily life. They are not only skilled golfers but also excel academically.
At BMH, with golf woven into our school's culture, our pupils receive weekly golf lessons from professional coaches starting from K1. Many parents opt to take their children to Mission Hills driving range from an early age. These two brothers began playing golf at age six as an after-school pastime, which has now become an integral part of their daily routine. They devote nearly one-third of their day to this sport.
How did these two children progress on the path to golf? We are intrigued by their journey. Thus, we have invited these brothers to recount their experiences and choices, which we hope will stimulate families seeking guidance in fostering their children's interests.
Throughout the interview, both children appeared calm, not very talkative. However, when discussing their fondness for golf, they became animated and eager to share more. The brothers disclosed that their love for golf was the sole reason for pursuing this sport and committing to training.
On an October afternoon, we accompanied two of the children to the driving range where they train every day. After changing into their sports gear and shouldering their backpacks, they proceeded to their habitual hitting spots.
The wide, unobstructed field gave them a clear view of where the ball was going, and also meant that the sun would be beating down on every inch of their skin. During the practice session, the only activity besides applying sunscreen and taking a water break was repeatedly hitting the ball one shot at a time to the far side marked with varying yardages.
"Both of them display remarkable punctuality in their training, assiduously following the coach's directives incrementally. They undertake high-intensity training with large quantities of practice, sometimes even beyond the coach's requirements." We received insights into their training from Coach Peng of the PGA Academy.
Balancing study and golf training can be challenging for two 12-year-olds. However, when asked how they managed it, their response was simple - "focus on what you're doing". Concentrate on studies during class, on golf during training, and use turnaround time to complete homework or review classwork.
Apart from golf, both children play the piano well, enjoy playing basketball and like to try many different sports, leading an active and diverse lifestyle. Nonetheless, they have conveyed that their parents are not strict but they may push themselves.
We all know this tournament was not the best of their golfing careers, and they will never stop here. They have a lengthy and exhilarating journey ahead. We look forward to the next moment of good news from the brothers.
