ISNS students in Grade 11 have recently experienced a milestone in their academic journey with the completion of the Extended Essay (EE) Cafe. This collaborative event offered students the opportunity to receive valuable feedback and insights on their extended essay projects, an essential part of the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP).

They demonstrated enthusiasm for their topics and a strong commitment to the EE process. With the support of supervisors, teachers, and Grade 12 peers, students are poised for success.

The Extended Essay

A Cornerstone of the IB DP

The Extended Essay is a pivotal component of the IB DP core, representing an independent, self-directed research project that culminates in a 4,000-word paper. It allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, developing critical thinking, advanced research, and writing skills. The EE fosters intellectual discovery and creativity, serving as a challenging yet rewarding part of the DP journey.

Supporting Students Through the Process

At ISNS, students begin their EE journey in Grade 11, each paired with a dedicated supervisor or mentor who guides them throughout the process. By May, students will complete a full draft of their essays, giving them ample time to review and refine their work before the final submission in fall.

The EE Cafe

The EE Cafe serves as a platform for students to present their ideas, research, and resource outlines to a listening panel consisting of their supervisor, other DP teachers, and a Grade 12 student. This comprehensive evaluation provides diverse perspectives and constructive feedback, helping students improve their essays and develop a deeper understanding of their topics.

We look forward to seeing the remarkable achievements of our students as they advance in their EE journey and approach the final submission deadline in late October.

Let's explore what transpired

 at the EE Cafe

Morgane

Hi I'm Morgane from grade 11. I chose to do a world studies Extended Essay which combines ESS(Environmental Systems and Societies) and geography. And I chose to do this because I wanted to combine my interests and my passion into one essay. For me there are some language barriers but also some time management challenges.

Alex

Hello I'm Alex from grade 12. The biggest piece of advice for Morgane I would say is to first of all do a lot of research which she's already doing because it is really important to consider a lot of different viewpoints to sort the essay. It is also important to do more research than you actually put into the paper because you should understand a lot of different background concepts and things that don't actually go into your essay but still contribute to your understanding.

Another point that I think very important for Morgane is to do a lot of analysis instead of simply stating different facts that she learned from the research. She has to make sure that she does a lot of comparison and evaluation towards whatever she researched.

Lastly this is a piece of advice that applies to everyone. It is time management. It is really hard to do everything we do in the IB. It's important to schedule your time and plan out everything you're going to do in order to meet all the different deadlines.

Lina

Hi I’m Lina from grade 11 and I decided to do my extended essay topic on economics. I chose economics as my extended essay subject because of my personal interest in economics and I also thought that it would be really interesting to look at the issues in our society through the economic Lens and to talk about the economic aspects of the issues that don't really look like they involve economics in It.

Jenny

I'm Jenny from grade 12. A piece of advice that I give to Lina is always be cautious while phrasing a research question. Because the research question is the starting point of your EE and it's important for you to narrow down the research questions so that your EE is essentially doable within one whole school year.

Second of all: keep your analysis relevant to the syllabus as well. In order to score a high mark for EE it’s important that you demonstrate what you learn in class especially for economics because you're doing economics EE.

And the third piece of advice would be time management because it's a 4000-word essay and you have a year to do it. So be sure to manage your time well and meet small deadlines so that you won't worry about it in your grade 12.

Callie

My name is Callie and I'm from grade 11. I've chosen English for my extended essay topic because I've always been interested in the exploration of complex themes within literature and I've actually chosen a classical piece of literature because not only am I familiar with it but also I think it offers a rich ground for analysis and the process of me solidifying my topic basically involves a lot of researching and gaining advice from my peers.

Cathy

My name's Cathy. I'm from grade 12 and as heard from Callie I think that some advice I'll give to her is first of all stick to the topic. Probably because English is a really wide area for research and I think the main point is to stick to the research question and to really dive deep into your understanding and literature. Maybe to elaborate on the different social issues that could have been said within the piece that you're investigating into.

Another piece of advice would be to cite your sources each and every time because when you're doing research you might be missing a lot of parts or you might be wondering if the piece of information will be useful to you. And in any of the cases just cite your sources very frequently so you can always go back to look at it and use it for your essay.

Slide to English

Morgane

Alex

Lina

Jenny

Callie

Cathy
