IBDP diplomas are highly sought-after by top universities, and IBDP students can apply to over 3,300 universities in 120 countries around the world, including Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia, giving them a wider range of universities to choose. Studies have shown that DP graduates have a higher chance of enrolling in higher education institutions, and with good DP scores they can gain direct university credit, exemption from similar courses and early graduation. IELTS/TOEFL scores are waived for some Commonwealth universities with DP English results, and SAT/ACT scores are not required, except for some top US universities.

According to the 2017 University Admissions Officer Feedback Report published by ACS International Schools, the IBO and the IB College Association (IBSCA), around 80% of students at Top UK and US schools are unable to manage their time and workload, around 85% are unable to think and learn independently, and around 70% have poor social skills and feel unable to make friends, which will all lead to negative impact on their development at university. But these skills are repeatedly practised during the study of IBDP, helping students better adapt to university life and achieve academic excellence.

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK), one of the three core elements, focuses on developing students' critical thinking and inquiry skills, seeking to make connections between subjects and focusing on the process of deriving the logic behind that knowledge. The TOK is divided into the following eight interlinked knowledge modules, from which students are required to choose six to study. The assessment of the subject is in the form of a TOK exhibition or essay.

Examples of TOK Questions:

• "Other people saw what that was and asked why. I see what that might be and ask why not". (Pablo Picasso) Please explore this distinction with reference to the two domains of knowledge.

The EE is a 4,000-word extended essay that exercises the scientific research skills valued by research universities abroad. Students are required to work independently under the guidance of a tutor and are free to choose a subject of their interest from the IB curriculum, set a thesis and complete the paper. Students can explore in depth issues related to a subject that interests them or conduct in-depth interdisciplinary research on an issue of contemporary global affairs.

The CAS means Creativity, Activity and Service. The CAS requires students to have a minimum of 150 hours of meaningful social activity content. To meet these three requirements, students are expected to find eligible social activities on their own and record their reflections. 

Through the three branches of CAS, students are given opportunities for self-determination, collaboration, achievement, and fun, and are encouraged to apply their knowledge and skills in community service, preparing them to become well-rounded individuals with a sense of holistic citizenship.

Students can choose one subject from each of the first 1 to 5 subject groups to ensure they have a broad understanding of their best language, foreign language(s), social sciences, experimental sciences, and mathematics.  Students can choose one arts subject from the sixth subject group, or choose on subject from science, humanities, or language from the first to fifth subject groups. 

Due to the complexity of the IBDP subject setting, students need to get guidance from their tutors on how to choose courses to ensure that they are consistent with the way of course selection in European and American universities.

At the end of the IBDP program, there is a summative assessment, which consists of an external test and an internal test (in-school grades). The external test, which accounts for approximately 80% of the final grade, is in the form of an examination paper, which is based on the difficulty level of the student's chosen course. Grades are assessed by external raters of the International Baccalaureate Organization. External testing for IB schools is in May in the Northern Hemisphere and November in the Southern Hemisphere. If the grades are not satisfactory, students can choose to retake the test in the following test season, but each person can only take a maximum of three test seasons.

Internal tests account for approximately 20% of the final grade, and the format varies depending on the specific subject. The internal test scores are assessed by the teachers at the school themselves, and the IBO randomly selects a sample from each school for scoring, so as to adjust the overall score of the internal test for that subject in the school.

The IBDP exams are criterion-referenced, which means that student performance is measured against pre-determined assessment criteria that are based on the curriculum aims and objectives of each subject and are not assessed against the performance of other students taking the same exam, making it a truly learner-centred approach.

The IBDP offers a variety of progression options for students, with marks calculated from 7 to 1 for each subject combined, with a maximum of 7. EE and TOK are graded separately and then combined, with scores ranging from 3 to 0, with a maximum of 3. CAS does not count, but must be completed as required, and the IB is worth 45 points. For diplomas, therefore, there are three types.

Full Diploma: 

A minimum of 24 points is required and certain conditions are met

Diploma: 

A single course diploma can be obtained with a score of 4 or above in a single subject

Bilingual Diploma: 

two courses in language A with at least 3 points, or language A in a language different from the language of instruction in the Individual and Social or Science group of subjects with at least 3 points.
