In an age of cultural convergence and unprecedented information flow, language learning transcends the mere accumulation of knowledge. It shapes cultural identity and helps forge the value systems of young people.
Learning how to remain rooted while staying open, and how to bridge tradition with modernity, has become a central challenge for contemporary Chinese education.
Guided by the vision of nurturing "global citizens with Chinese roots," the Chinese curriculum at Aidi International Junior High School integrates the national curriculum, the essence of traditional Chinese culture, and cross-cultural comparative studies into a coherent learning ecosystem. The program goes beyond language instruction to cultivate disciplined thinking and intellectual curiosity.

Language is the medium of thought, and culture the soil in which identity grows. At Aidi, learning Chinese extends beyond vocabulary and texts. It is a journey of expanding intellectual horizons and deepening cognitive frameworks.
The curriculum focuses on developing five key competencies:
Critical Thinking
Through close reading and cultural inquiry, students learn to question, analyze, and reflect. They explore the perspectives embedded in texts, developing the ability to form independent judgments.
Dialectical Thinking
By comparing Chinese and Western traditions, students explore the historical logic behind cultural differences and learn to find common ground amid diversity, developing a more balanced intellectual perspective.
Cross-Cultural Communication
Through authentic contexts and simulated scenarios, students hone their expressive abilities while cultivating active listening and empathy, gaining the skills to communicate and collaborate confidently across cultures.
Systemic Thinking
The curriculum connects literature, history, philosophy, and the arts, encouraging students to move beyond isolated texts and develop a holistic understanding of knowledge.
Cultural Creativity
Rooted in tradition, students reinterpret cultural heritage in contemporary ways. They redesign intangible heritage experiences, adapt classical drama, and blend Eastern and Western artistic elements in original creations.

Anchored in the national Chinese language curriculum, the program extends into two distinctive modules, forming a unified three-pillar framework.
National Chinese Language Curriculum
This component strengthens students' language fundamentals while systematically developing reading comprehension and writing skills, ensuring academic excellence and readiness for future study.
Classical Studies and Cultural Heritage
Centered on classics such as The Analects, The Book of Songs, and Records of the Grand Historian, this module integrates textual study with hands-on activities including calligraphy, tea culture, seasonal traditions, and etiquette. Classical wisdom moves from page to practice, making cultural heritage tangible and alive.
Comparative Studies of Cultures
A signature element of the program, this module explores annual themes through two phases: experiential presentation and academic research. Students engage in both intuitive cultural understanding and analytical comparison.
All thematic studies stem from the national textbooks. After studying The Classical Gardens of Suzhou, students visit traditional Chinese gardens and compare them with the spatial symmetry of the Palace of Versailles. Their learning culminates in research reports on "Eastern and Western Spatial Philosophy," transforming textual study into cross-cultural inquiry.

Educational outcomes should extend beyond the classroom. They should be visible, recorded, and shared. To document students' intellectual development, the Chinese department has created three original publications:
Sprouts: A Collection of Student Writing
Three times per semester, selected student compositions undergo intensive revision, spanning narrative, argumentative, and creative genres. Through multiple revisions, they learn to sharpen structure, polish language, and deepen ideas.
Reader in Traditional Chinese Culture
Developed by the Chinese faculty over two years, this resource integrates all cultural modules into a coherent guide. Featuring classical readings, contextual notes, inquiry questions, and extension resources, it serves as a cultural map for students exploring Chinese civilization.
Journal of Cross-Cultural Studies
Published annually in the second semester, this journal showcases student research projects including academic essays, field reports, creative designs, and dramatic scripts. It reflects both the breadth and depth of their cross-cultural insights.

Learning extends far beyond the classroom. Each year, the Chinese and Western Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival transforms academic learning into immersive cultural experiences.
Grade 7 Cultural Games Day
Students craft Kongming locks, practice pitch-pot, and learn paper-cutting while exploring chess strategies and the evolution of Western card games. They learn through play and reflect through comparison.
Grade 8 Architectural Model Exhibition
Using eco-friendly materials, students construct models of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda and Notre Dame Cathedral. Through hands-on exploration, they examine the ingenuity of mortise-and-tenon structures and the engineering logic of flying buttresses.
Craft and Costume Workshop
Students experiment with tie-dye and embroidery while studying Rococo-era costume structures. Their work culminates in a creative fashion show titled "Across Time."
A highlight was the Spring 2024 cultural celebration, "Ancient Meets Modern, East Meets West." Entirely planned and performed by students, the event showcased remarkable creativity. Grade 7 presented Hanfu fashion, Grade 8 explored cultural etiquette, and Grade 9 staged original plays blending Chinese and Western cultural elements.
After the event, students continued their reflection through Cultural Observation Journals, exploring questions such as why different civilizations view life and death differently and what values underlie traditions of etiquette. Selected reflections were later published in the Journal of Chinese and Western Cultural Studies, preserving these insights as part of students' intellectual growth.
From planning to performance and reflection, students developed collaboration, expression, creativity, and critical thinking through authentic tasks, embodying a learning process grounded in doing, inquiry, and creation.

From clearly defined competencies to a coherent curriculum framework, from documented learning outcomes to immersive cultural experiences, our Chinese curriculum forms a complete and dynamic educational ecosystem.
Chinese Roots, Global Vision
The program affirms the cultural foundations of Chinese civilization while encouraging dialogue with the wider world. Rather than separating tradition from modernity or setting East against West, it builds bridges through understanding and comparison, cultivating cultural confidence and global awareness.
Competency-Oriented Learning
The curriculum prioritizes intellectual growth and essential competencies. Reading emphasizes analysis and argumentation, writing develops structure and clarity, and discussion strengthens perspective and logical reasoning. Learning moves beyond memorization toward deeper understanding.
Tangible Results, Traceable Growth
From essay collections and academic journals to models and stage performances, students' progress is carefully documented, forming a lasting record of their development.
Dedicated Educators
The Chinese faculty combine strong grounding in classical culture with an international outlook. Through continuous curriculum innovation and thoughtful mentorship, they support students in growing with confidence and independence.
In an age rich in information, what grows increasingly rare is composure and intellectual breadth. As cultures intersect and interact, an essential question emerges: how should one stand in the world?
Our answer is clear: with confidence rooted in cultural heritage and with openness toward the civilizations of the world.
This confidence grows from a deep understanding of China's five-thousand-year civilization. It is embedded in the strokes of Chinese characters and echoed in the cadence of classical poetry, carrying both the wisdom of past thinkers and the enduring spirit of a people.
Such openness arises from understanding and respecting cultural diversity. It calls for viewing the world with curiosity, listening to difference with reason, and locating one's own place through dialogue and mutual learning.
The Chinese curriculum is designed to cultivate both this confidence and this openness. Here, students engage with classical texts while encountering the wider world. They hear the echoes of civilization in the rhythm of Chinese characters and expand their perspectives through cultural comparison. In doing so, they learn to understand tradition without being confined by it, and to step into the world with confidence.
When cultural identity and global understanding grow together, and when critical thinking deepens alongside humanistic awareness, a broader future becomes not merely an aspiration, but a natural path of growth.
