I would like to share with you a profound story titled "No Room for a Sneeze." This is not just a folk tale; it is an allegory that contains deep wisdom and insights. The story aligns with the IB Learner Profile attributes of "Thinkers," "Reflective," and "Caring," which are essential virtues we need to cultivate on our journey of growth.
In the story, a family was troubled by their cramped living space and sought advice from a wise man. The wise man's advice initially seemed to make things worse, but ultimately, the family realized that by identifying and addressing problems, their house was much more spacious than they thought, and their life was filled with happiness and joy. This story teaches us that contentment is the source of happiness and we should be grateful for everything we have. Sometimes, unexpected joy and satisfaction can be gained by reducing unnecessary mental friction and desires, cutting down on unhealthy food, and adopting a healthier lifestyle.
Reflection plays an indispensable role in our learning and life. Just as the family in the story realized their happiness after experiencing chaos and challenges, I encourage everyone to take time at the end of the day to review their learning experiences, interpersonal relationships, and personal growth through a journal, group discussions, or personal reflection. Such habits will help us better understand ourselves and clarify our direction for growth.
The family in the story initially only focused on their own need and neglected the happiness they already had. I hope MIS students can care for the needs of others, whether in the classroom or in the community. By participating in house and student government activities, you can gain a deeper understanding of how your actions influence others and learn to care for others, fostering the attribute of caring.
Of course, I must emphasize that maintaining reading is an important way to broaden our horizons, obtain knowledge, and develop empathy. We encourage everyone to read widely, including literary works, historical books, and scientific magazines. Through reading, you can not only understand diverse cultures and perspectives but also transcend immediate difficulties to think about a broader future.
