The Year 4 students used their global perspectives lessons to plan their engagement in this event. The students worked in teams and planned their “School Bus Wash fundraiser” with mind maps as they thought about all the possible tasks, equipment and arrangements needed to organise this event successfully. The students showed outstanding leadership as they communicated and collaborated in their teams to complete the task successfully.
On Children’s Day, the students got their water buckets, sponges, rags, mops and brooms ready for the exciting task. The students met with the bus driver and discussed how to wash the school bus. The students' faces lit up with joy as their sponges got wet when they started to wash the school bus. The students got a sense of responsibility and thought about why they were cleaning the bus as they are the students who use the school bus daily. During the event, the students also shared their thoughts about other students globally whose schools don’t have school buses or children who don’t receive an education. After the students were done, they greeted the bus driver and thanked him for this experience. Then the students changed into their superhero and princesses clothing and continued with the rest of the exciting Children’s Day activities at school.
With great success, the Year 4 students reached their goal of raising funds for UNICEF by taking action with this exciting School Bus Wash fundraiser event to raise Peace awareness and to help provide humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. As Year 4 took action during these events, it helped students develop their social/emotional skills. Thus, the reflection on the teaching outcome shows that the Year 4 students demonstrated their eagerness and curiosity as a learner, persistence and creativity in seeking solutions to problems, appropriate communication skills when expressing needs, wants and feelings, and understanding and following rules, empathy and caring for others, cooperative group play, sharing materials and experiences and taking turns, respect the rights of self and others, develop relationships with children and adults during this intended event. Spectacular Year 4, this was an activity worth remembering! The wheels on the bus go, so be part of the adventure; otherwise, it’s a long way to walk from home to school!
