Angela:

Jill, we're intrigued by your choice of the prompt "What Would Happen if We Ban Billionaires." Could you delve into the factors or influences that inspired you to explore this topic? What motivated you to delve into the potential consequences and implications of such a ban on billionaire individuals?

Jill:

People all share a common cognition that COVID-19 sent shockwaves to the whole global economy, leaving it in a state of disarray and inflicting prolonged suffering upon humanity. However, they may be unaware of an astonishing fact: a select group comprising billionaires has witnessed their fortunes double amidst this catastrophe, exacerbating inequality. In fact, COVID-19 is not the culprit for the ever-widening inequality. It exposed the issue of excessive inequality, which persists in the 21st century. Profound impacts of economic inequality transcend merely economic aspects, extending to social aspects such as social cohesion. Thus, measures are needed to address the problem. Inspired by the French economist Thomas Piketty’s influential work “Capital in the 21st Century”, which condemned billionaires as catalysts for the ever-widening chasm of inequality, I finalised my ideas and explored this prompt. At first glance, it may seem reasonable to simply deduce that billionaires are detrimental to the economy and deserving of restraints. However, the feasibility and effectiveness of instruments targeting billionaires are still questionable and negative economic effects could also result. This necessitates in-depth research to gain a panoramic view of the ramifications of “banning” to answer this “what if” prompt and support this theoretical notion.

Angela:

Wow, Jill, we sincerely appreciate your profound insights into a wide range of global issues. Your ability to recognise the underlying correlations behind these complex challenges highlights their far-reaching impact on every aspect of our society.

Jackie, we have also noticed that you have selected the topic "Introduction of Medical Robots Appearing from the 20th Century until Now" and considering your consistent involvement in the field of science and maths throughout your IB journey. Could you share what has been the driving force behind your academic excellence in the sciences and maths? What inspires and motivates you to continually strive for excellence in this field?

Jackie:

The driving force behind that academic excellence would be my interest as well as my expectations of myself. Since I was young, I have always been interested in understanding the world around me and keen on researching further with the knowledge I have already learned. Soon, I discovered my talent in this area, as my logical thinking allows me to accept and understand a new topic easier than others. Interest inspired my learning in science, while expectation brought me motivation. After achieving more and more goals, I realized my actual level and set an expectation for myself, mainly from my self-confidence of “I know I can do it so I will do it”. This expectation has driven me to a higher level, higher than the level at which impossible if only depending on my interest in science.

Angela:

You truly embody the remarkable outcome that emerges from the synergy between innate talents and unwavering effort. I am very glad to have such a role model for our students. Now, we will have our interviewer Starry to continue with some more interview questions.

Starry:

As DP2 students, you face significant academic stress and pressure. We are curious to know how you navigate this demanding environment and effectively manage your time to strike a balance between your academic responsibilities and personal pursuits beyond the curriculum.

Jill:

I don’t have special ways that help me navigate the demanding environment as I know that efforts are needed for high goals. However, I do think that interest is the key that push me beyond the curriculum. I am interested in economics and want to pursue it as my major in university, so I am continually seeking opportunities to expand my knowledge in this realm. I will not intentionally strive for balance as the interconnectedness of knowledge from within and beyond the curriculum can aid in deepening my understanding of the subject.

Jackie:

One main method for me to deal with the pressure is to avoid competition with others while focusing on my own. Specifically, I set a goal for myself, and I will only focus on that goal. In this case, I can avoid getting extra pressure from “winning” others. Despite that, I still keep my interest besides academics and spend some time doing them as a reward after finishing some academic work. As long as my work is finished properly with a clear understanding of academic content, I will give my freedom to myself in deciding the usage of the rest of my time.

Starry:

Thank you, Jackie. I totally agree with this. In the case that DP has a lot of assessment, time management is a very important thing, which can help us to better allocate time and have high efficiency. It also can help relieve the stress and maintain a balance lifestyle.

Most people think that there are some similarities between twins, such as living habits, personality, learning style, and so on. As twins who have been studying in ISA for a quite long time and have excellent academic performance, what do you think are the similarities and differences between your learning styles and habits?

Jill:

Although we are twins and grew up together, we are different individuals in terms of our academic strengths. My brother is exceptionally intelligent, excelling in maths and science, whereas I possess keen interest in social sciences and excel in essay writing. I am also a bit of a perfectionist, whereas Jackie is not. Additionally, I tend to be more productive during the night while Jackie is more inclined to work during the day. In terms of our lifestyle, Jackie and I share a preference for spending time at home rather than going out.

Jackie:

I do think there are many differences between our living style as well as our learning style. For example, Jill is hard-working while I am not as hard working. Like Jill said, I like to study during day time instead, but Jill likes the quietness in night time; we also show talent in different academic areas, I mainly focus on science and math-related, and Jill is more likely to focus on social science and other stuff.

Angela:

Lastly, to wrap up our interview, what advice do you have for other students who aspire to achieve similar academic recognition?

Jill:

Discover your talents and interests. These are the most important factors that enable you to excel academically. Find things that truly interest you and continue to dedicate your time to them. Another crucial advice is to read more books. Books are the things that can broaden your horizon and give you insights into your chosen field. It is also a way to showcase your academic interests and the extent of your research, which can be advantageous for your university application. Additionally, cultivating creativity and staying aware of global news and pressing issues can provide abundant materials and ideas for exploration.

Jackie:

My advice towards them would be to clearly understand the position they are staying in. Specifically, we are always wanting to achieve a higher goal that exceeds our ability. However, improvement is a process, instead of a result. In this case, realizing our ability as well as consistently improving would be more appropriate in my perspective. Don’t be afraid if you feel left behind by others, and just focus on yourself since academic is not complex interpersonal relationships. Don’t be shy to ask for others' help and gather every resource to reach higher.

Angela:

Thank you for these valuable advice for our students! This is the end of our interview, thank you for being with us today.
