"Chinese foundation and application of Western learning" originated in the late Qing Dynasty, referring to the core concepts, values, principles, and methods derived from studying Chinese ethics history and applying Western technology, methodologies, tools, and products.

Today, it holds a deeper meaning: learning knows no boundaries. When acquiring and using knowledge, students should focus on mastering a solid foundation, understanding the essence of Chinese and Western cultures, and integrating this knowledge into their studies, lives, and work.

Fettes College Guangzhou adopts a distinctive expat and Chinese Heads of College management model and a bicultural leadership system to address this challenge. The Chinese Head of College, Ms Julie Zheng, has over 28 years of international education experience. At the same time, Mr Gakes, the expat Head of the College, has immersed himself in China's global education industry for over 20 years. The two Heads of the College have cultivated over 20 years of collaboration experience, comprehending the essence and nuances of both Chinese and Western education. They bring their educational expertise, philosophies, and cultural backgrounds, identifying the most suitable "integration points" for Chinese students. It seamlessly integrates the core aspects of Chinese and Western education and culture across innovative curriculum systems, method of teaching, educational concepts, teacher training, student care, and home-school interaction. The cooperation models between Chinese and expat class teachers or Chinese and bilingual teachers vary in certain international schools. Some schools adopt a model where expat teachers lead, with Chinese teachers offering support. In contrast, others allow Chinese and expat teachers to teach independently with a spliced curriculum. At Fettes College Guangzhou, we have implemented a "double teacher teaching system" where two teachers collaborate in managing the class and developing the curriculum. This approach fosters deep communication and mutual guidance between teachers, continuously improving teaching content tailored to students' needs. Fettes College Guangzhou has established a comprehensive system of Chinese and expat houseparents and pastoral care in line with the British boarding system tradition. Houseparents and subject teachers communicate closely, sharing insights into students' lives, academics, and emotional well-being.

Expat houseparents provide students with an authentic British boarding experience, while academic tutors offer continuous feedback on students' learning progress within the boarding department. Pastoral care ensures real-time coordination between students' living situations and counsellors.

The growth of students is seamlessly integrated between the academic department and the boarding department, allowing them to experience the influence and integration of diverse cultures fully. This approach fosters the development of various skills students can carry into their future lives.
