In the morning, the Year 4 students at ISA Tianhe set off on an adventure as they were introduced to their latest Unit of Inquiry, (UOI): How We Express Ourselves. With a focus on signs and symbols the students will be investigating the past and present of signs and symbols as well as how humans use them to communicate.

 早晨,四年级的学生们开启一段不同寻常的冒险之旅(主题探究课程)。他们开展了新的UOI探究单元学习——我们如何表达自己,以标点和符号为重点,学生们将研究标点和符号的发展历史,过去和现在以及人类如何使用标点符号进行交流。


Mystery of Kokundu

故事的背景

The adventure began as the students were introduced to Sir. Henry Wilberforce (Explorer extrordinaire) and Detective Huang. They took the students to the scene of a recent robbery and explained that the Treasure of Kokundu had been stolen. The students were asked to explain what the strange symbols on the door meant and why they were in yellow and black? After the students had explained that these symbols meant caution, they entered the classroom and began investigating, in their groups, a series of mysterious clues which had been left in Hieroglyphics, Cuneiform, Cyrillic and Shang Dynasty Logographic form.

在冒险之旅开始前,学生们认识了杰出的探险家Henry和黄侦探。由于近期发生了一起抢劫案,Kokundu的宝藏被盗了,他们与学生一并到达劫案的现场。在被问到门上警戒标识意味着什么,为什么是黄色和黑色时,学生们解释道这是提醒人们需要谨慎的标识。他们小心翼翼的走进教室,以小组的形式调查一系列以象形文字、楔形文字、西里尔字母和商代文字形式留下的神秘线索。


Treasure Hunt Adventure

As each clue was solved, the mystery only appeared to dig deeper. Students donned their adventure hats and set out to meet a host of perculiar strangers, such as the bizarre ‘Tribe of Sanders’ who demonstrated a love of all things chicken. Each stranger, demanding our student explorer’s identify familiar symbols in return for a parts of the final puzzle. Students quickly realised that each puzzle piece would allow them to decode the final mystery message, left in emoticons.

随着一串串的线索被解开,谜团似乎只会越挖越深。学生们带上冒险帽,出发前往向他们提供了线索的“桑德斯部落”一探究竟,这个部落对于“鸡”十分有研究。作为最终谜题的一部分,每个陌生人要求学生探险家辨认卡片的符号。学生们很快意识到,每一块拼图都是破译最后神秘信息的线索,这些信息都是用表情符号留下的。

Safely back in the investigation room, they were able to use this knowledge to help them successfully decipher the final message. Using the four puzzle pieces, once again reunited, they discovered that the message was in fact the Central Idea for our latest unit; ‘Signs and symbols can be used to communicate a message.’

学生们安全回到调查室后,他们利用这些线索成功地破解了最后的谜题。将这四个拼图重新组合在一起,他们发现这个信息实际上是我们最新单元的中心思想——“标点和符号可以用来传达信息。”


Quests complete and ‘The Mystery of Kokundu’ solved, our intrepid explorers were able to unlock the ‘Treasure of Kokundu.’ Much to their delight it turns out that the so called treasure was in fact a chest full to the brim with delicious sweets!

任务完成,勇敢的探险家揭开了“Kokundu之谜”,解锁了宝藏,看到装满美味糖果的宝藏箱,孩子们十分欣喜。


Mystery solved, belly’s satisfied and a successful reflection sheet later; all signs point to the fact that the students of Year 4 are now ready to begin their new Unit of Inquiry.

最后,孩子们在谜底解开的成就感和享受糖果的甜蜜中进行了本次课程的复盘。他们已经准备好迎接新的探究单元的学习。
