全球排名前5%,祝贺11年级学子获英国生物测评IBO金奖

在12年级同学不断接收顶尖院校发来的Offer的同时,高中其他年级的同学也在不断收到竞赛佳绩。在最新揭晓的2023年英国生物测评IBO (International Biology Olympiad) 成绩中,11年级Helena同学喜获全球金奖


While Grade 12 students are continuing to receive offers from esteemed colleges and universities, the remaining Secondary School students are also receiving competition results. In the recently disclosed outcomes of the IBO (International Biology Olympiad) 2023 UK Biology Assessment, Grade 11 Helena attained a global gold medal.



在全球范围内的参赛者中,Helena以92.85分的高分位列前5%(2023年金奖分数线为89)。同时,10年级学妹Elaine同学也一举获杰出奖。


Helena secured a position in the top 5 per cent of global entrants with an impressive score of 92.85 (the 2023 Gold Medal score line is 89.) Grade 10 Elaine was honoured with the Award of Highly Commended.

英国生物测评由全球权威的生物学术组织-英国皇家生物学会主办。英国皇家生物学会汇集了100多个国家的著名生物学家和研究人员。


IBO不仅考察学生AS阶段生物学课纲内的知识,还非常鼓励他们做课外延展阅读和深度学习。


竞赛考核的内容非常广,涵盖了生物分子、细胞结构、免疫系统、交换表面、循环系统、植物运输、分子遗传学、生物多样性等知识点。


The Intermediate Biology Olympiad is hosted by the Royal Society of Biology, the leading academic organisation for biology globally. The Royal Society of Biology brings together leading scientists and biological researchers from over 100 countries.


IBO not only assesses students' knowledge within the AS level biology syllabus but also strongly encourages them to engage in extensive reading and deeper learning beyond the classroom. The competition covers a broad range of topics, including biological molecules, cellular structure, the immune system, exchange surfaces, the circulatory system, plant transport, molecular genetics, and biodiversity.

生物老师Jennifer在解释IBO的特点时提到,“试题会涉及到非常前沿的科学,其中的例子并非学生常见,甚至可能是全新的名词。在这种情况下,学生需要凭借他们大量阅读积累过的知识点,或对所涉及知识点有深入透彻的理解,才能成功解答试题。”

As the premier biology competition globally, participants need to be at the ‘top of their game’ in terms of both breadth of knowledge and the ability to integrate it effectively. 


Secondary School Biology teacher Jennifer elucidates the characteristics of the IBO by stating, "The questions delve into cutting-edge science, with examples that are not commonly encountered by students and may even introduce new terms. In such instances, students need to rely on the knowledge they have acquired through extensive reading or possess a deep and thorough understanding of the required knowledge to successfully answer the test questions." 


"Before the exam, we delve into past questions and tutor students specifically on their weak points. Conscientiousness and initiative have been consistent learning attitudes in the class, so winning the award was something we anticipated."

the study of Biology 



生物学习面临的挑战之一在于理解大量全新的概念,同时还需满足双语的要求。


为了帮助学生们彻底理解并记住知识点,Jennifer会确保同学们完成“学习”、“理解”和“输出”的闭环。


同时,与FCG其他学科一样,Jennifer老师将作业分成几个层次,确保每位同学都能以有效的方式提高学习进度。


One of the challenges of studying Biology in Secondary School is grasping numerous new concepts and the need for bilingual proficiency. Jennifer ensures that the learning loop is closed, enabling students to "export" their knowledge in a way that facilitates thorough understanding and retention. 


Similar to other subjects at FCG, Jennifer divides assignments into several levels to ensure that each student progresses effectively. Assignments for students needing a deeper understanding focus on the knowledge framework.



对于未能理解知识点的同学,他们的作业侧重于知识的梳理。每周,学科老师也都会在特定时间给同学们进行小组辅导。对于已经熟悉知识点的同学,Jennifer老师则鼓励他们进行有趣的实验,充分运用所学对生物学领域的热点进行研讨分析。


这些热点话题来自Nature、Science、Cell等生物顶尖期刊杂志。学生需要在Youtube、知乎、中国知网等资源平台上主动获取信息,并完成自己的分析和理解输出。


Each week, subject teachers also conduct small group tutorials at specific times. For those already familiar with the subject matter, Jennifer encourages them to apply their knowledge by conducting interesting experiments and analysing hot topics in the field of biology. 


These hot topics include content from science platforms such as Nature, Science and Cell. Students are required to actively access information on resources such as Youtube and Zhiwang to complete their own analyses and understanding outputs.

An essential quality of modern science: 

the "power of skepticism"


科学哲学家卡尔·波普提到,错误可能隐藏在得到很好证实的那些理论中,寻求这样的错误是科学家的特殊任务。人们看到的被成功使用、得到很好证实的理论或技术可能是错误的,这可能是一种重要发现。


Jennifer老师认为这样的“质疑精神”无须等到掌握大量知识后才去实践。课堂上,每当进行重要实验,她总是会问“这个实验方法目前的缺点在哪里?我们可以在哪些方面优化它?”


Jennifer老师用这样的提问促使学生们积极调用所学知识,不仅在理论层面,也能在实践中帮助他们思考科学方法的应用。



而在潜移默化中,这种怀疑精神将在他们未来的学术生涯和事业中发挥重要作用——使之推动自身的认知边界、乃至人类的认知边界。


Philosopher of science Karl Popper stated, errors may be hidden in those theories which are well confirmed, and it is the special task of the scientist to seek such errors. The observation that well-proven theories or techniques that one sees being used successfully may be wrong can be an important discovery.


Jennifer believes that such "scepticism" need not wait until a great deal of knowledge has been acquired before it is put into practice. Whenever she conducts an important experiment in the classroom, she always asks, "What are the current shortcomings of this experimental method, and what can we do to optimise it?"


Jennifer's questioning motivates her students to actively use what they have learnt, not only on a theoretical level but also to think about the application of the scientific method in practice.



Implicitly, this scepticism will play an important role in helping them in their future academic careers and endeavours—pushing the boundaries of their own perceptions and indeed the perceptions of humanity.

Step by Step

For FCG students, accumulating awards from international competitions is an integral part of preparing for further education. Simultaneously, this in-depth academic challenge allows them to absorb a great deal of knowledge and refine their intellectual capabilities. 


"Ms Jennifer taught me many points that I haven’t learned as she explained the topics of the competition. My Chemistry teacher, Ms Jiaxue, similarly helped me think in terms of chemistry when I encountered chemistry-related questions in the book, such as explaining the structure of organic matter. By looking at these structures, the questions really became easier to understand."
