AIC Teacher-Student Debate: A Clash of Differentiated Wisdom !

Last week, AIC held an unprecedented teacher-student debate, focusing on the motion "Should dating be banned in school?". This event was not just a clash of knowledge and wisdom, but also a platform for intellectual exchange between teachers and students.

The government side, represented by a student team including Pianpian, Angus, Delia, and Kenny, firmly advocated for the ban of dating on campus. These students showcased exceptional debate skills and a critical as well as evaluative level of spoken English. They argued from various aspects such as time management, academic focus, and the maturity of teenagers. Citing a range of data and studies, they emphasized the negative impact of dating on students' time management and academic performance, and the irrational decisions teenagers might make due to emotional fluctuations.

The opposition side, comprising AIC teachers Miguel, Misty, William, and Donnie, robustly countered from different perspectives. They pointed out that dating is an essential part of adolescent self-exploration and growth, and a complete ban could be counterproductive. The teachers stressed the need for more comprehensive and effective measures to help students balance academic and personal life, rather than simply prohibiting dating.

The debate was hosted by Yoke-Lin, characterized by both tension and enjoyment. Before the debate commenced, Yoke-Lin expressed gratitude to all the teachers and judges present. Students demonstrated their debating talents and deep understanding of the topic, while the teachers displayed their wisdom and experience with a mature and steady approach.

At the conclusion of the debate, Chris, the Head of school expressed his enjoyment of the debates and encouraged more students to participate in English activities like the debates. His remarks underscored the importance of such activities in enhancing students' English public speaking abilities and fostering of a spirit of inquiry and of argumentation.

This debate was not only an exchange of knowledge but also a collision of intellects. It showcased the diversity and openness of school education and provided a platform for students to exhibit their debating skills as well as critical thinking abilities in English language. Such an activity undoubtedly sparks more interest in debate and analytical thinking among students, laying the foundation for their comprehensive academic development.

British Parliamentary Debate 创办者

This is my first time creating a debate CAS and it can be counted as the hardest club I have ever joined. This activity of debating is time and energy-consuming, and requires lots of reading, researching, and communication skills. British Parliamentary Debate is very new to me and it’s a pleasure to get to know about and engage in this debate format. I will never regret establishing this CAS.

Through the three months of participation in debates, my mindset has changed from ‘Why can’t I do this’ to ‘I did great today! I have stated my argument loud and clear'. From constantly blaming and doubting myself, thinking I may be a burden to the team, to now, I’m more open-minded, realizing any activity needs a certain amount of time and practice. I can’t just expect myself to have the courage and bravery to speak fluently only after a few tries; that’s just expecting too much and adds lots of stress to the work I already have in DP1.

In the beginning, I had lots of confidence in this CAS, but as more members are quitting because it’s adding too much pressure on them, (which I totally understand), I feel a bit upset, and I have no courage to continue it. Even so, I, with a constant mindset of liking to embrace new challenges, continued and persisted leading this CAS until an amazing conclusion of a teacher and student debate, inviting the whole school to come and watch.

Throughout this CAS, I learned the importance of communication, caring, being balanced, and risk-taking. For preparing today’s teacher and student debate on whether dating should be allowed on campus or not, my teammates Delia, Kenny, and Angus and I appointed times to discuss which statements and ideas would be most suitable and beneficial for our side. I was worried and anxious, but they would always encourage and support me by giving positive feedback. In the same way, I would encourage and care for my team members when they’re feeling nervous. It’s wonderful working with them.

At the end of the teacher and student debate, our principal, Mr. Chris said he enjoyed listening to our speeches and would encourage students to join debates more. Along with this, many of my peers informed me that I had changed their preconceived notions of debate as boring or scary, and showed them how fun it could be. I am glad that my CAS has helped to promote and hopefully encourage people to join or consider joining debate. Ms. Yoke Lin and Mr. Donnie said they were proud of me for how much I have improved, and I really appreciated it.

An improvement in giving speeches would help me in the Chinese IOA, TOK, and Chinese Culture presentations later on. I have gained more confidence and am more aware of my ability and strength. I wish to continue this debate CAS next semester.

Ms. Yoke Lin和Mr.

Teacher‘s Reflection

Miguel

Our school's first British parliamentary debate on the motion 'This house should ban dating on campus' was an intellectually stimulating and entertaining event. The students, leading the proposition, presented compelling arguments emphasizing the importance of academic focus and the potential distractions of campus dating. On the other hand, the teachers, as the opposition, argued for personal development and social skills, as well as the value of mental health and wellbeing. The exchanges were not only insightful but also infused with humor, making the debate lively and engaging. This event not only encouraged critical thinking and persuasive speaking skills but also highlighted the ability of our school community to discuss contentious topics with respect and open-mindedness. It was a remarkable experience that enriched our understanding of a complex issue and the art of debate.

I had an absolute blast at the teacher versus student British parliamentary debate; the atmosphere was exhilarating, especially since we did not expect to have such a large audience of teachers and students! For me, diving into this format for the first time was not just fun but a learning experience as well, and debating against our students made it even more exciting. I thoroughly enjoy research, so prepping for the debate was right up my alley, and it was a refreshing change from my usual teaching routine. I've also got a competitive streak, and this debate was the perfect stage to exercise that after a really long time. Plus, watching my fellow teachers in action and each with their unique debating style, was super entertaining. The student team were cut-throat and well prepared with their arguments, and I was truly impressed, especially considering that their side of the debate was more challenging to argue and defend. A big shoutout to Pianpian and Miguel for bringing this debate format to our school. It's been a fresh experience, and I'm really looking forward to more debates next semester.
