As the Chinese Lunar New Year approaches, AIC has hosted a profoundly educational Chinese Culture Week. This event was masterminded by the insightful Caroline, meticulously planned and coordinated with the assistance of Julianne from the Chinese department. David Dai, Jane, Michelle, Amber, and the collective effort of house captains Wendy, Chaukeen, Victoria, and Julianne, all contributed to the success of this cultural extravaganza. A highlight was the Wednesday AIC Talks on "Chinese Cultural Presentation," where students showcased their deep understanding of Chinese culture, in collaboration with Yoke-Lin, the head of the English department.

The week’s events showcased the AIC's philosophy of integrating Chinese culture as the core and international education as the guide. At this special time, we were not merely celebrating the advent of an ancient festival; we were nurturing future global citizens, preparing them to live in a globalized world through understanding and respecting the traditions of various cultures.

Chinese Culture Week of AIC began with a calligraphy competition on Monday. Each stroke the students made was filled with concentration and reverence for classical Chinese art. It was not only a display of their calligraphic skills but also a journey through history, as they replicated ancient characters that have been a cornerstone of Chinese culture for thousands of years.

Tuesday's activities brought forth a feast of knowledge and culture. On this day, students gathered in the auditorium to participate in a thrilling cultural quiz competition. The questions spanned a wide range of topics from Chinese traditions to world literature, challenging the students' depth and breadth of knowledge. In the competition, they were required not only to answer questions about Chinese history and art but also to demonstrate their understanding of other cultural realms of the world, reflecting the school's commitment to international education.

The competition was more than a learning and showcasing event; it was a display of teamwork and collective intelligence. Students had to collaborate and think together to win the contest, showing that the challenge was not just about individual knowledge but also about the ability to work together and communicate effectively.

A scholarly tradition of AIC, stood out as a highlight of the Chinese Culture Week, with DP1 students presenting a splendid showcase on Chinese culture. The talks were hosted by Caroline, the founder of the lecture series, and Yoke-Lin, the head of the English department.

The first lecture, titled "Return to the Tang Dynasty," was presented by Chloe, Stella, Christine, and Yoyo, who took us on a journey back to that illustrious era. Their lessons in English class have transcended language to embrace a deep understanding of ancient Chinese culture, enriching their knowledge of history and demonstrating their global perspective and cross-cultural communication skills as IB students. Presenting confidently in front of foreign teachers unfamiliar with Chinese culture, they embodied both the challenge and their dedication.

Following this were Pianpian, Bella, Gabrielle, and Alex, who offered an introduction to Chinese cuisine, using regional culinary traditions as a lens to view broader cultural patterns, sparking a desire for knowledge and cultural interest among the audience.

The third segment featured Cindy, Ivy, William, and Roy discussing Oracle Bone Script, a topic demanding extensive research, which showcased the academic depth AIC students are known for. They presented a reenactment of ancient sacrificial rituals and traced the evolution of Chinese characters, displaying a rich understanding of ancient Chinese script and evoking a sense of identity and pride, to the acclaim of all present.

The finale and crowning performance was a traditional Chinese shadow puppetry show by Celester, Erica, Fiona, Orlando, and Waverly. The students independently planned every detail of the performance, from the props to the lighting, masterfully bringing this ancient art form to a modern audience.

Thursday's fun charity sale stood out as a highlight, showcasing a delectable array of Chinese culinary delights and cultural experiences. Students and teachers alike eagerly participated, not just to savor the flavors but also to celebrate the rich tapestry of Chinese traditions together.

In the food stall area, the traditional art of Chinese sugar painting captured the curiosity of many. Artists skillfully crafted various animals and floral designs on bamboo sticks, impressing onlookers with the sweet flavors and intricate forms. Bingtanghulu, or candied hawthorns, was another popular treat, its unique sweet crunchiness and glistening appearance evoking nostalgic memories of festive times past.

Students penned their New Year wishes and blessings on special wish cards, then hung these hope-filled notes on a dedicated wishing wall. This modern take on a traditional custom not only brought a contemporary twist to the festivities but also gave students and teachers from around the world the chance to share and wish for each other's happiness and well-being.

The entire charity sale not only showcased the charm of traditional Chinese cuisine but also fostered communication and unity within the school community.

On the final day of Cultural Week, the teachers and students of AIC donned a variety of traditional attire, showcasing the diversity and allure of Chinese culture. The campus was transformed into a miniature cultural expo, providing everyone with the opportunity to personally experience and celebrate the rich heritage of China. This was not just a tribute to Chinese culture in full regalia, but also the best demonstration of the inclusive nature of international education. It was a vivid display of AIC's commitment to international-mindedness and cultural appreciation, as the school community came together to honor and engage with the customs and traditions that are a vital part of China's storied history.
