A scholarly tradition of AIC, stood out as a highlight of the Chinese Culture Week, with DP1 students presenting a splendid showcase on Chinese culture. The talks were hosted by Caroline, the founder of the lecture series, and Yoke-Lin, the head of the English department.
The first lecture, titled "Return to the Tang Dynasty," was presented by Chloe, Stella, Christine, and Yoyo, who took us on a journey back to that illustrious era. Their lessons in English class have transcended language to embrace a deep understanding of ancient Chinese culture, enriching their knowledge of history and demonstrating their global perspective and cross-cultural communication skills as IB students. Presenting confidently in front of foreign teachers unfamiliar with Chinese culture, they embodied both the challenge and their dedication.
Following this were Pianpian, Bella, Gabrielle, and Alex, who offered an introduction to Chinese cuisine, using regional culinary traditions as a lens to view broader cultural patterns, sparking a desire for knowledge and cultural interest among the audience.
The third segment featured Cindy, Ivy, William, and Roy discussing Oracle Bone Script, a topic demanding extensive research, which showcased the academic depth AIC students are known for. They presented a reenactment of ancient sacrificial rituals and traced the evolution of Chinese characters, displaying a rich understanding of ancient Chinese script and evoking a sense of identity and pride, to the acclaim of all present.
The finale and crowning performance was a traditional Chinese shadow puppetry show by Celester, Erica, Fiona, Orlando, and Waverly. The students independently planned every detail of the performance, from the props to the lighting, masterfully bringing this ancient art form to a modern audience.
