他热爱运动,是运动场上闪耀的“跳远明星”、网球王子”与“灌篮高手”。


他领导力突出,是统筹、组织过多场学生活动,在公开演讲场合落落大方的学生会主席。

He has good academic performances, enrolling in the top high school in Guangzhou. He is the winner, ranking top 1% globally in math competition and ranking top 5% globally in physics competition; He is an outstanding student who has appeared on stage many times at the semester awarding closing ceremony; He won the national runner-up and the title of the "Outstanding Debater of the whole competiton" in the Chinese Debate Tournament. 


He is also good at playing tennis and basketball who have held the championship of long jump in HW for past 3 years. 


Moreover, He is the president of the student union who organized many activities and delivered countless public speeches in English.


Today, we are going to tell the story of how a boy become a well-rounded and outstanding student under the cultivation of HW.

勇敢地尝试,并做到了极致


4月24日这一天,当同龄人仍如苦行僧般在题海中挣扎之时,张延一却已先一步上岸,顺利被华附提前录取。好消息传来,祝贺与祝福纷沓而至。虽说录取中难免有“运气”因素存在,但不可否认的是,必然一定大于偶然。


从七年级到九年级,在华外的这些年是看着张延一长大的班主任陈老师也难掩激动之情:“整个I-EP都在替他高兴,因为我们太知道他这一路走来的不易了。”

On April 24, when his peers were still struggling in the examination, Andrew had successfully got the offer from HFI. When the good news came, congratulations poured in. Although there is inevitably a "luck" factor in the admission, it is undeniable that this is the inevitable result of hard work.


From G7 to G9, his homeroom teacher, Ms. Chen could not hide her excitement: "we are all happy for him, because we all know that this result is not easy to come by.

如果追溯起来,张延一在七年级刚来华外时,并不是传统意义上的“完美”学生,乖巧的外表下带着点叛逆与好强。长年练习网球的缘故,运动员的身份赋予了他一股不服输的韧性,但也让他很容易就被赛果影响情绪,即使是一次很小的失利,也会在私底下难过很久。不过也如班主任陈老师所言:


好强可能在一部分人眼里并不是一个好词,但无可否认,成功的人不可能没有好胜心。而在华外的教育理念看来,好胜心恰恰就是内驱力的源头。作为老师,我们要做的不是否定,而是引导,以最大限度地发挥他的内驱力,同时让他学会自洽,做心态富人。


入学不久,陈老师很快就发现了张延一身上的闪光点,在教育他进行有效情绪管理、调节心态的同时,也给予了他大量的支持与帮助。三年来,张延一在华外提供的各种平台中汲取养分,如同一棵大树一样向上生长,慢慢长成了如今枝繁叶茂的模样。

When Andrew first came to HW in G7, he was not a "perfect" student in the traditional meaning of the word, with a bit rebellious and aggressive. Because he practiced tennis for many years, his identity as an athlete gave him a sense of toughness, but it also made him easily affected by the results of the game, even if it was a very small loss, he would be upset for a long time. However, as Ms. Chen, his homeroom teacher said:


Competitiveness may not be a good word, but there is no denying that successful people can't be without a competitive spirit. In our educational philosophy, Competitiveness is exactly the internal drive, as a teacher, what we have to do is not to to guide. We need to maximize his internal drive while making him understand the process is more important than the result.


Ms. Chen, quickly discovered his shining point, and gave him a lot of support and help while teaching him how to effectively manage his emotions at the same time. Over the past three years, Andrew has absorbed experiences from various platforms provided by HW, and grew up like a big tree gradually.

他将第一名视作目标,认真对待每一次作业和考试,每一科都是如此。他积极参与各种各样的学术竞赛,收获了无数的奖项。


更令人惊喜的是,通过SEL社交情感课程的学习以及老师们的指导,现在的张延一已经学会了成熟地主导、调节自己的情绪。在中文阅读擂台赛中,张延一与他的同班同学以初中组的年龄越级挑战高中组。面对比自己强大的对手,他们也丝毫没被打乱阵脚,而是沉着冷静地应对。甚至在紧张刺激的抢答环节,当其他队都纷纷因误触答题按钮而被扣分时,我们的队伍也依然做到了零失误,且每次都能率先抢答并有条不紊地说出正确答案。最终,这支由七名初中生组成的队伍竟奇迹般地摘得了该项赛事的高中组桂冠。而这种良好的心态也正是张延一能在各大比赛、考试中如鱼得水的重要因素。


在强大内驱力的驱动下,张延一没有给自己设定边界,而是在不同的领域勇敢地尝试、表达、挑战,并不断地坚持,做到了极致。

He considered the first place as the goal and took every assignment and test seriously. He actively participated in a variety of academic competitions and received numerous awards. 


More surprisingly, through the SEL courses and the guidance of his teacher, Andrew has learned to control his emotions maturely. In the Chinese BOB Competition, Andrew and his classmates challenged the high school team at the junior high school age. Even in the tense and exciting quiz div, they were not disrupted at all, but remained calm. When the other teams were deducted points for touching the answer button by mistake, they still managed to make zero mistake, and every time, they were able to be the first one to grab the answer and speak out the correct answer in an orderly manner. In the end, this team of seven junior high school students miraculously won the championship of the tournament in the high school category. This kind of good mentality was also an important factor for him to get achievements in many competitions and exams.


With a strong sense of internal drive, Andrew did not set boundaries for himself, but bravely explored and expressed himself in different fields and did the best as his can.

英语能力 English Skill

三年时间,实现从P1到P4的飞跃


在华外I-EP初中,每学年开学时,英语学科组的老师们会对学生进行分层测试,以便在之后的英语学习中实现高效率的分层教学。从小就读公立体系,缺少沉浸式的语言环境,七年级时的张延一也曾因英语入学成绩不理想而被分到P1(P1为分层学习中的基础等级)。然而,他并没有一蹶不振,正如他所说:


英语学习是一个循序渐进的过程,难免会遇到不懂的问题。很多同学都会因为害怕被嘲笑而不敢开口问、开口说,但其实这是一种错误的想法。没有人天生就会英语,每个人都会经历一个从弱到强的过程。


为了攻克英语难关,在课堂上,他专心致志,专注于老师所讲的每一点内容;在课下,他每天坚持背诵单词、练习语法,并积极参加校内外举办的各类英语活动,努力将英语融入到日常生活中。功夫不负有心人,经过不懈的努力,初中三年,张延一的成绩取得了惊人的进步,不仅实现了英语学习从P1到P4的突破(P4为分层学习中的等级),到现在面对全校的师生、家长,也能以全英的方式发表演讲、侃侃而谈。


在今年华附国际部入学考试的全英文面试环节中,张延一就斩获了72分的高分(全体考生的平均得分是60分),顺利被华附录取。

In I-EP, before the start of the semester, our English teachers will give students a tiered test so that we can exert efficient tiered teaching. Lacking an immersive language environment before, Andrew was assigned to P1 due to his poor English in G7, However, he recovered from sadness quickly, as he stated:


Learning English is a gradual process and it is inevitable that you will encounter questions you don't understand. Many students are unwilling to ask because they are afraid of being ridiculed, but this is actually a wrong idea. No one is born knowing English, everyone goes through a process from weak to strong.


In order to improve English, in class, he listened carefully; after class, he insisted on memorizing words and practicing grammar every day, and actively participated in all kinds of English activities. After unremitting efforts, in this three years, Andrew's academic performance has made amazing progress. He has not only made a breakthrough in his English learning from P1 to P4 (P4 is the highest level in the tiered learning), but he can also speak fluently in English in front of everyone. 


In the English interview session of the entrance exam of HFI in this year, Andrew obtained a high score of 72 (the average score of all candidates was 60) ,and was successfully admitted to HFI.

除了自身的刻苦,张延一表示,他的逆袭更离不开华外英语老师们对他的厚爱与帮助。


我很喜欢这里的英语学习环境,我从来都不用担心因为出错而被批评,这里的老师总鼓励我们要勇于尝试,大胆表达,积极思考,勤于积累。我们的课堂总是充满着欢声笑语,因为老师们会把枯燥的英语知识转化为生动有趣的实践活动,让我们在轻松愉快的环境中掌握英语技能。除此以外,全英的授课环境根本不需要我们刻意去学,很多东西都是自然而然地就学到了。


英语水平的提升,不仅为张延一打开了学术之门,更赋予了他更强大的自信心。他的蜕变,也激励着无数和他一样在英语学习上遇到困难的学子们,继续勇敢挑战,实现自我突破。

In addition to his own hard work, Andrew concluded that his breakthrough is even more indispensable to the love and help from his English teachers


I love the English learning environment here. I never have to worry about being criticized for making mistakes, and the teachers here always encourage us to try, express, think, and work hard. Our classes are always full of laughter because our teachers turn boring English knowledge into lively and interesting practical activities, allowing us to master English skills in a relaxed environment. In addition to this, the all-English environment does not require us to learn deliberately at all, and many things we learned naturally.


The improvement of English has given Andrew a stronger sense of self-confidence. His remarkable changes also inspire countless students like him, who has difficulties in learning English, to continue bravely challenging and realizing their own breakthroughs.

时间管理 Time Management

做好时间管理,一切皆有可能


面对优异的学业成绩与全面的综合技能,张延一却显得十分谦逊。他坦言,自己并非天赋异禀,也没有什么独特的学习秘诀。在他看来,踏实勤奋是基础,而高效的时间管理则是关键。


华外的生活是十分充实的,学科学习、学术竞赛、文艺演出、社团活动、外出探究、志愿者服务等等,你会有大量的机会去体验不一样的精彩。但时间是有限的,所以你一定要区分什么是你喜欢做的,什么是你必须做的,什么是你紧急要做的,什么是你可以适当延后去做的。

Speaking of sharing the learning experience, Andrew, however, is very modest. He admited that he doesn't have any unique learning secrets. In his opinion, being diligent is the foundation, and efficient time management is the key.


The life in HW is very busy, you will have abundant chances to experience different things including subject study, academic competition, artistic performances, club activities, field trip, volunteer project and so on. But time is limited, so you must distinguish what you like to do, what you must do, what is urgent and what can be postponed appropriately.

When it's time to study, Andrew never lets time go to waste, but sets clear goals. Every week, he would take a quiet moment to think about the week's plan, make a to-do list and prioritize it according to the level of importance and then focus fully on what he need to do. Moreover, he will also divide the goals and make short-term & long-term plans, as the teacher taught him.


Andrew divided time into clear segments, each of which was given a clear mission. When he was fully focused on a particular task, everything around him seemed to be hidden, leaving only the challenge in front of him to be conquered. This highly efficient method of learning not only allowed him to become competent under the heavy school work, but also gave him more time to make more attempts.

在电子产品充斥生活各个角落的今天,张延一固然也会通过游戏来奖励自己,实现劳逸结合。但他始终保持着理性而自律,他清楚知道,作为学生,自己有更重要的事情需要完成。


打游戏、刷视频等娱乐活动可以迅速刺激大脑分泌多巴胺,带来一时的愉悦感。但这种快乐往往是肤浅而短暂的。与之相反,在学习和健身时,虽然过程中可能伴随着挑战和艰辛,但当我们克服困难取得进步时,大脑会分泌出内啡肽,这时,我们收获的是持久而充实的满足感。


做好时间管理,一切皆有可能。在繁重的学业中,张延一始终坚持多项涉猎、积极探索各种可能、兼顾不同身份,看起来满载的时间表,但他的生活也从未忙乱过,每一步都走得踏实而坚定。

Today, with electronic allure flooding all corners of life, Andrew certainly also plays games to relax himself, but he remains rational and self-disciplined. He clearly understands that, as a student, he has more important things to accomplish.


Entertainment activities such as playing games and swiping videos can quickly stimulate the brain to secrete dopamine, bringing a momentary sense of pleasure. But this pleasure is often superficial and short-lived. In contrast, when studying and working out, although the process may be accompanied by challenges, the brain secretes endorphins when we make progress overcoming difficulties, and we will get large sense of satisfaction


With good time management, nothing is impossible. Andrew has always insisted on actively exploring various possibilities. While he seems to have a full schedule, his life has never been chaotic, and he moves forward steadily

反思力 Be Reflective

在修正和完善中实现自我超越


学习的真谛在于反思,缺少反思的学习难以产生深度。因此,华外坚定不移地将培养学生思辨思维和反思能力贯穿于教学事业的始终。


课堂之上,除了传统的期末总结外,我们还设立了专门的反思课,引导学生在当天学习的基础上进行深入思考,将知识内化为己身。同时,学校还会定期举办反思沙龙,邀请优秀学生分享学习心得。在每一个探究项目中,也都设置了反思环节,让学生们将反思融入实践,从不同的角度审视自己的研究成果,发现问题、分析原因、提出改进方案并及进行项目优化。正如张延一提及:


反思是一种审视自我思想、行为和经历的过程,是自我学习和自我成长不可或缺的重要方式。通过反思,我们可以拨开迷雾,看清自身的优缺点,洞察问题的根源所在,从而在不断的修正和完善中实现自我超越。

The key to learning is reflection. Therefore, we are firmly committed to fostering students' critical thinking and reflective skills throughout our teaching career.


In addition to the traditional final summary, HW also set up special reflection class to guide students to think deeply and internalize the knowledge on the basis of the day's learning. At the same time, we also regularly hold reflection salons, inviting outstanding students to share their learning experiences. Reflection sessions are also set up in every inquiry project, allowing students to integrate reflection into practice, to identify problems, analyze the causes, and optimize the project. As Andrew said:


Reflection is a process of examining one's thoughts, behaviors, and experiences, and is an important and indispensable way of self-growth. Through reflection, we can see our own strengths and weaknesses, identify the causes of problems, and thus realizing self-improvement in continuous correction.

三年的学习,张延一早已习惯地把反思融入到日常的学习生活之中。在备考数学竞赛时,他深知一味刷题并不能带来质的飞跃,他更乐意花时间进行自我剖析。他不仅敏锐地察觉到自己在几何方面存在知识欠缺,还将其细化为三角形、四边形等具体的知识点进行针对性的练习,而这正是他能在有限的准备时间里斩获全球金奖的关键。


球场上的张延一同样充满着反思精神。他曾因球感不佳而屡屡扣篮失败,但他并未气馁,而是通过反复反思,发现了核心力量不足这一问题所在。于是,他加紧训练,强化核心,终于在一次次的跳跃中,稳稳地将篮球扣入篮筐。


对于未来,张延一有着清晰而明确的目标,而他也在不断反思中审视自身、优化行动,正一步一步地把梦想变为现实。

After three years of study, Andrew has been used to combining reflection with his daily study. When he was preparing for the math competition, he was more willing to spend time on self-analysis. Not only was he aware of his own deficiencies keenly, but he also practice it for a long time, which was the key for him to winning the Global Gold Medal within the limited preparation time.


Andrew is also full of reflective spirit beyond his study. He once failed to dunk again and again. But he did not get discouraged, through repeated reflection, he found that the problem lies in the lack of core strength. Therefore, he intensified his training and strengthened his core, and finally dunked successful after numerous try and practices.


For the future, Andrew has a clear goal. He is also optimizing his actions as well as becoming better in continuous reflection, and is turning his dream into reality step by step.
