Since joining ISA in August 2023, David Manfield has spent a year with us. As the Chief Academic Officer of ISA International Education Group, he has dedicated himself to establishing systems and structures, enhancing management and leadership, and driving excellence across the entire group.

回望过去的这一年,爱莎系学校在追求卓越的道路上不断前进,无论是学生取得的成就还是学校自身的发展,都有了长足的进步。


爱莎学子在2024年IB大考和AP大考中取得亮眼成绩,IB大考分44,12名学子获40及以上高分,AP大考94人单科满分,6门学科100%满分率。第二届毕业生延续首届毕业生的锋芒,截至7月23日,已获得555枚录取,合计497万美金奖学金。在覆盖多个学科和领域的国际高规格竞赛中,如英国生物测评、美国生物测评、美国AMC8数学竞赛、英国化学奥赛、“物理碗”美国高中物理测评、世界学者杯(深圳站)等等大赛中,爱莎学子屡获全球金奖、银奖,闪耀世界学术竞技舞台!

Looking back on the past year, ISA schools have made significant strides in their pursuit of excellence. Both the students' achievements and the schools' development have seen substantial progress.


ISA students achieved excellent results in the 2024 IB Diploma examination and AP examination. IB: the highest individual score is 44 (out of 45) and 12 students scored 40 and above. AP: 94 students scored full marks in individual subjects and all students achieved perfect scores in six subjects. ISA’s class of 2024 achieved impressive results following in the footsteps of last year’s graduating class. By July 23, they had received a total of 555 offers with an accumulated scholarship totalling 4.97 million US dollars. ISA students achieved remarkable success with outstanding performances in prestigious international competitions like British Biology Olympiad (BBO), BioOlympiad Initiative USA-China (BIO USACN), American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC8), UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO), PhysicsBowl, World Scholar's Cup (WSC) Shenzhen, etc.

在2023胡润百学中国国际学校排行榜中,爱莎旗下4所学校上榜,并荣登中国外籍人员子女学校30强。此外,爱莎科学城学校和爱莎天河学校成为CIS(国际学校联盟委员会)成员学校。爱莎荔湾、武汉爱莎外籍人员子女学校和武汉爱莎文华高级中学正式成为Cognia官方认证学校。 


爱莎荔湾正式获得美国大学理事会(College Board)的AP(美国大学先修课程课程)授权,正式成为能够提供AP国际课程和考试的学校。爱莎荔湾还接连获得国际文凭组织 (IBO) 的授权,获得IB MYP (国际文凭中学项目) 和IBDP(国际文凭大学预科项目)的认证,在创校短短两年内就完成中学阶段的IB认证。此外,武汉爱莎文华高级中学也成功获得IBDP(国际文凭大学预科项目)认证,武汉爱莎外籍人员子女学校获得IB PYP(国际文凭小学项目)授权

ISA schools were featured in the list of the Hurun Education Top International Schools in China 2023. ISA Science City International School was listed among the Top 10 International Schools while ISA Wuhan International School was listed among Top 30. ISA Science City International School and ISA Tianhe International School became Member Schools of CIS (Council of International Schools). ISA Liwan, ISA Wuhan International School and ISA Wenhua Wuhan High School have successfully earned Cognia® Accreditation, marking a remarkable step forward in our commitment to delivering a world-class education.


ISA Liwan has officially received authorization from the College Board to offer AP (Advanced Placement) courses. It has also been awarded accreditation to deliver the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). Besides, ISA Wenhua Wuhan High School has been successfully accredited by the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and ISA Wuhan International School has officially been authorized as an international IB PYP world school.

As the former headmaster of YK Pao School and Dulwich College Beijing, what do you think is the most important for education?

作为上海包玉刚实验学校和北京德威国际学校前校长,你认为教育最重要的是什么?


David认为北京德威国际学校和上海包玉刚实验学校都有一个做得很好的点,两所学校都设定了非常高的标准和目标,让学生和老师致力于远大的目标和理想,这种追求卓越的文化可以最大程度地发挥人的潜力,而这也正是教育应该需要做的,“教学不仅仅是教授孩子们基础知识,这是你必须做的,你需要确保他们能读写、数学能学得不错、基础知识扎实,这是任何学校都应该做的。但我认为学校还能做的另一件事绝对具有基础性意义的事情是:学校能为学生设定更高的目标,为学生能够达到的成就设立高标准。”

David thinks that one of the great things about Dulwich College Beijing and YK Pao School is that they set the bar very high. The students and teachers come in and they commit to high ambitions and aims. And that energy creates a culture of excellence which can help fully unlock people’s potential. And this is just what education should do, “Teaching is not just about giving children the basics. That's what you have to do. You need to make sure they can read and write, that their maths is good, that the basic knowledge foundations are there. That's what any school should be doing. But I think the other thing which a school can do which is absolutely foundational is it can set a high bar, a high standard for students as to what they are capable of achieving.

Now we are honored to have you as the Chief Academic Officer of ISAIEG, after all these time spent with ISA, what are your feelings about it?

作为爱莎国际教育集团首席学术官,从加入到现在,你如何看待爱莎?


加入爱莎至今已经一年,David享受在爱莎的工作,致力于在集团建立系统和架构和他前面所提到的高标准,完善爱莎的管理和领导力,希望和爱莎一起进步,走上卓越之路,“爱莎国际教育集团目标远大,创始人致力于建设优秀的学校,他们投入了大量资金建设宏伟的学校建筑,为学生提供良好的设施。爱莎发展得非常快,而且爱莎成功度过了新冠艰难的时期,新冠疫情对中国和全世界来说都是艰难的。现在爱莎在一个需要巩固发展的阶段,我相信爱莎今后会逐步成为卓越的学校。

David has been with ISA for nearly one year. He said he really enjoys working here. He’s committed to building systems and structures into the group and trying to set the standards that we expect for teachers and for students. He’s also looking at things like governance and leadership, hoping to creating excellence together with ISA. “The group has lots of ambition. The founders are committed to building great schools and they've invested huge sums of money in building architecturally impressive buildings with good facilities for students. They've grown very quickly and they've grown through a difficult time for China and deep for the globe through the Covid problems. And so now they're at a place where they need to really consolidate and to become the great schools that I know that they can be.

How do you think holistic education is implemented at ISA?

你认为爱莎是如何践行全人教育理念的?


爱莎的IB全人教育鼓励学生全面发展,作为拥有40多年教育经验的教育工作者,David对全人教育有深刻的见解,“从某种意义上说,全人教育只是描述一个我们在教育孩子时面对的现实。英语中的 “educate”一词来源于拉丁语词根“educare”,意为引出内在的东西,所以每个人内在都有一种天赋。”David认为好的学校能够提供学生学习基础知识的机会,课外全面发展的机会,这样学生有机会尝试一些以前没有机会接触的东西,内在的天赋才能够被激发出来。

ISA's IB holistic education fosters students' all-round development. As an educator with more than 40 years experience in education, David has some insights about holistic education. “In one sense, holistic education is just simply a description of the reality that we have when we educate a child. The word to 'educate' in English comes from a Latin root 'educare' which means to draw out that which is within. So within each individual you have an intellectual ability.” David thinks that a good school will give opportunities for students to learn the basic skills as well as to develop other extracurricular skills. So students’ potential can be fully unlocked.

在David看来,爱莎在这方面做得很好,“在爱莎,我们不仅有学术课程,还有各种辅助课程以及课外活动、周末活动,我们还有爱莎国际学苑提供机会让学生做他们平时没有机会去做的事。除此之外,爱莎还有科创中心、艺术中心、音乐中心、体育中心,这些进一步为孩子们提供了拓展能力的机会,当他们18岁毕业离开时,他们将拥有丰富的经验,有学术上的成功和资历,还有参加过的球队、演出过的剧目、演奏过的音乐会,所有这些将构成他们完整的个人履历,这就是真正的全人教育,从各个方面全面培养一个孩子。”

David thinks highly of ISA's holistic approach to education, “At ISA we have not only the curriculum and the extended curriculum with the CCAs and then the after school activities, the weekend activities, and we have the Academy that is providing additional chances for students to do things that they wouldn't otherwise have a chance to do. We also enrich those opportunities with things like the Innovation Centers, the Arts Centers, the Music Centers, the Sports Centers, which again open doors for children to do things that will extend them. When they leave at 18, they'll have a whole array of experiences under their belts, academic successes and qualifications but also teams they played in, plays they've been in, musical concerts they played in, all those things that will build up the repertoire who they are as a person and that is holistic education that educates the whole child.”

What do you think of the future development of ISA?

你如何看待爱莎未来的发展?


David认为任何新学校集团都有一个五到十年的建设期,爱莎作为蓬勃发展中的学校,还有很长的路要走,“这是一个出色的集团,有很多新学校,在不同学校,有不同的升学路径正在不断完善。我们需要确保爱莎系学校在提供最适合我们学生的教育方面保持一致。我们要提供最好的资历、最好的生活准备,从学校内部培养新的领导、新的校长。我们需要完善管理系统、报告系统,确保我们希望学生能够在我们学校获得的,不管是学术的还是全人教育的东西,都融入到我们的运营方式中。”

David thinks any new school group has a five-ten-year period when it's building its systems and what we call traditions and rituals within the school. As a thriving education group, ISA still has a long way to go. “It's a brilliant group with lots of new schools. Within the schools there are different pathways that are being evolving. We need to make sure that our schools align with what's best for the students that come through our doors, the best qualifications, the best preparation for life, training up new leaders and new head teachers from within. We need to work on the government systems, the reporting systems and making sure that all the things that we want to see children experience in our schools from an academic perspective and from a broad holistic perspective are built into the way that we do business.”

David said that things like good university placements, great academic results, great sporting team successes don't happen by chance. They happen because there's been a background with good preparation and systems that work behind the scenes to make those things happen. ISA is in the process of creating the excellence that we're aspiring to and we believe we can nurture more and more leading talents and pioneers for the future together with all ISA community members.
