新学期的课堂,Spyridon同学在Bonita老师精心设计的“宾果游戏”中玩得十分投入。在这个游戏中,他不仅学会了相关数学概念的英语单词,还通过一张张精心制作的卡片,进一步加深了对这些数字及其顺序的理解。

Queenie, a Grade 1 pupil, is intently counting the dots on the dice on her desk. Excitedly, she shares her discovery with her classmates: "Look, there are five dots here and four dots there. Five is one more than four!"


In a Mathematics lesson, Spyridon is fully immersed in a "Bingo" game meticulously designed by his teacher, MS. Bonita Huang. Through this engaging activity, he not only masters the English terminology for mathematical concepts but also deepens his understanding of numbers and their sequences with carefully crafted cards.

In these classes, numbers cease to be abstract and challenging concepts. Instead, they transform into tangible, visible elements that the children can easily grasp. Bonita cleverly integrates learning into play, making lessons lively and engaging, igniting the pupils' enthusiasm for learning.


The seemingly contradictory qualities of "rigour" and "fun" are perfectly balanced in the approach of Bonita Huang, the Head of Mathematics at Fettes College Guangzhou.


With over a decade of experience in bilingual mathematics education, Bonita is known for her logical precision and meticulous thinking. In Bonita's view, the core value of mathematics education for primary students is not merely teaching them arithmetic. She firmly believes that "mathematics education's true value lies in cultivating students' logical thinking and problem-solving abilities." After all, not every student will become a mathematician or pursue a career directly related to mathematics.


Therefore, Bonita starts fostering a love for mathematics and a structured approach to problem-solving from an early age, as these skills will be crucial in their future lives and careers.


Bonita carefully designs engaging activities in her classes that allow students to apply mathematical knowledge in real-life situations, thereby kindling their passion for the subject.



有机农场课程是Bonita在小学数学教学实践中的代表项目,学生们在参观真实农场后,自主地运用面积计算、成本估算等数学知识,规划出了一个个小型有机农场,其中包含了作物区、养殖区、灌溉系统等区域。在这堂课上,学生们学会了自然地运用数学知识来解决实际问题。


然而,Bonita并不满足于仅仅教会学生解决问题。她更希望学生用“数学语言”进行表达。“数学沟通能力不仅要求学生能够清晰地表达自己的解题步骤和答案,更重要的是,他们要用数学语言来解释和证明自己的思路。”Bonita谈到,在数学教育中,包含五大模块:数学基础知识、数学基础技能、数学元认知能力、学生学习态度和数学沟通能力。其中,数学沟通能力不仅有助于学生取得更佳成绩,还能为他们未来学术、职业发展打下坚实的基础。“在课堂上,我会经常让学生分享自己的解题思路和方法,鼓励他们用数学语言来表达自己的想法。”

One of her flagship projects is the organic farm course. After visiting a real farm, students use mathematics knowledge such as area calculation and cost estimation to plan their small-scale organic farms, including crop areas, livestock divs, and irrigation systems. Through this project, they naturally learn to apply mathematics to solve real-world problems.


However, Bonita's ambitions extend beyond simply teaching students to solve problems. She wants them to express themselves using the "language of mathematics." "Mathematical communication isn't just about students clearly explaining their solutions and answers. More importantly, they should be able to use mathematical language to articulate and justify their reasoning." Bonita points out that in mathematics education, there are five key components: foundational knowledge, basic skills, metacognitive abilities, student attitudes towards learning, and mathematical communication skills. Communication skills help students achieve better academic results and lay a solid foundation for their future educational and career development. "In class, I often encourage students to share their problem-solving approaches and ideas, urging them to express their thoughts using mathematical language."

双语数学教育:思维的碰撞与融合

尽管在国际学校工作多年,Bonita仍然被广州斐特思的工作氛围所打动。

Despite her many years of experience in international schools, Bonita is still moved by the working environment at Fettes College Guangzhou. 



作为广州斐特思小学数学组长,Bonita对数学教学有着独特规划。她认为,双语数学教育不仅仅是语言技能的结合,更是思维的碰撞与交融。她强调:“我会让学生既要掌握数学的核心概念与方法,还要在中英文语境下自如地表达与应用这些知识。”因此,她的教学规划将结合丰富的双语教材与国际教育资源,围绕提升学生双语数学能力这一核心展开。课程设计将紧扣特定数学主题,注重中文和英文授课内容的平衡与互补。

As the Primary School Head of Mathematics, Bonita has a unique vision for mathematics education. She believes that bilingual mathematics education is not merely a blend of language skills but a fusion of thinking. She emphasises, "I aim to ensure that students not only grasp the core concepts and methods of mathematics but also express and apply this knowledge fluently in Chinese and English contexts." Therefore, her teaching plan integrates a wealth of bilingual textbooks and international educational resources, focusing on enhancing students' bilingual mathematical abilities. The curriculum is designed around specific mathematical themes, with careful attention to balancing and complementing the content taught in both Chinese and English.


Bonita also values individual student differences. "The school uses differentiated teaching strategies to provide personalised learning support for each student, ensuring they progress at a pace that suits them." She incorporates inquiry-based learning methods and differentiated instruction in her classes, encouraging students to enhance their mathematical logic and cross-cultural communication skills through group work and practical activities.


While strengthening students' foundational knowledge, Bonita and the primary mathematics department will actively seek opportunities to host more international competitions. This will give students a broader, global platform to showcase their mathematical talents and further solidify their knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject.


Under Bonita Huang's careful guidance, students' love for mathematics will undoubtedly take root and flourish like seeds in their hearts.
