At BIS, we believe in holistic education that cultivates lifelong learners ready to face the world. In line with this belief, BIS recognizes students who exemplify the Cambridge Learner Attributes each month with a special award. Welcome Back Little Cubs: Embracing "Homes and Family"

We are thrilled to welcome back our Nursery Lion Cubs class after a refreshing 9-day holiday! The children have settled in beautifully and are adapting remarkably to our classroom environment. It’s heartwarming to see their smiling faces reconnecting with friends and engaging in creative play.

This week, we are focusing on the exciting theme of “Homes and Family.” The kids have been actively participating in discussions about what makes a house a home and the different types of families that exist. Through storytelling, art projects, and interactive activities, the children are learning to share their unique family stories and experiences.

It’s amazing to witness their confidence grow as they express themselves and embrace this theme. They are drawing pictures of their homes, building models with blocks, and even collaborating on a class mural that represents our diverse families. We are seeing incredible social skills develop, as they listen to each other and offer support and encouragement.

Thank you for your continued support as we nurture their growth and learning. We look forward to a wonderful week filled with love, creativity, and exploration!

Year 6: All about Collaboration, Inquiry, and Fun Learning!

Subject Achievement in English:

In English class, we have been focusing on writing and using a technique named, “Hamburger Paragraph Writing”. This provoked curiosity among everyone as students could associate their paragraph structure to a delicious hamburger. After 1 month of writing, editing, revising, and publishing we had our first COL (Celebration of Learning). This was an opportunity for students to share their published work and writing experiences with each other. At last, we celebrated by making and eating our own hamburgers in class.

Engaging Classroom Activities in Science:

In science class, we have been inquiring into the human body, and the functions of all organs. Collaboration plays an essential role in the core subjects in Year 6, and therefore the students have opportunities to explore and experience hands-on activities together. Furthermore, we were honored to have a Y6 parent as a guest speaker, Mr. Peng, who came to visit our science class and shared his extensive knowledge on our current learning. (Mr. Peng is a professor at the Southern Medical University in Guangzhou).

Innovative Teaching Approaches in Mathematics:

In mathematics class, we collaborate, teach each other in small groups, and share mathematical calculations. Recently, we have been investigating different units of measurement (length, mass, capacity), and recording our data on paper. Moreover, the students must put their knowledge to use by baking a chocolate mug cake in a microwave oven! This is a captivating in-class activity that promotes critical-thinking among students.

Year 7-9 English: Creativity, Progress, and Achievements

So far this year, the students in our Year 7, 8, and 9 English classes have continued to develop their language skills through critical thinking and project-based learning. Multimedia resources and gamification have significantly contributed to the classroom experience, helping to sustain student engagement and allowing them to explore literature and language in exciting new ways. 

In our Student Spotlight, I would like to celebrate our Year 7 learners, Dung and Rei, who have made remarkable progress in their English language skills. Beginning the year with limited confidence, their dedication has resulted in improved reading comprehension and several outstanding published written pieces. 

Some of our most engaging activities this term have included reading of Seventh Grade by Gary Soto, writing creatively, and creating detailed extra large posters about buildings from around the world. These projects fostered critical and creative thinking, teamwork, and research skills.

Noticeable achievements within our subject area include several students earning A grades (Excellent) on their recent poster projects, while other students received high praise from both their peers and teachers for their persuasive speeches. 

As an educator, my teaching philosophy centers on nurturing creativity and curiosity. In alignment with this philosophy, I have recently embarked on a Master of Education (M.Ed) program, which has enhanced my ability to address diverse learning needs in the classroom.

Music Class Highlights: Ukulele Chords, Vocal Warm-ups, and Piano Accompaniment

This week in music class, we covered a variety of topics:

1.Chords on the Ukulele: We started by learning the basic chords on the ukulele, which are essential for playing many popular songs. This hands-on activity helped students understand the instrument's mechanics and basic music theory. We covered simple strumming pattern following the quarter and eighth note values. This helps the students to keep a steady beat while practicing and performing. 

2.Vocal Warm Up and Solfege - Singing Do, Re, Mi: We then moved on to vocal warm-ups, emphasizing the importance of warming up voices before singing. We introduced solfege, using the familiar tune "Do, Re, Mi" from "The Sound of Music" to help students understand musical intervals.

3.Chords on the Piano and Singing Easy Rhyme: Next, we transitioned to the piano, where we learned basic chords and how to accompany our singing. The first few chords we learned were the C Major, F Major, and the G7 chord. The lesson followed the colour coded method in learning the chords and singing along ancient Chinese poetry and easy rhyme songs to practice the piano skills. 

We believe that music education is not just about learning to play an instrument or read sheet music; it's about fostering a love and appreciation for music that will last a lifetime.
