Exploring Spring and Summer in Nursery Tiger Cubs Class

Written by Ms. Kate, November 2024.

This week in our Nursery Tiger Cubs class, we embarked on an exciting journey through the changing seasons, focusing on the beauty and vibrancy of spring and summer. As part of our ongoing Weather Wonders theme, we explored how these seasons transform nature and influence our daily lives.

The children observed the transition from spring, with its blooming flowers and fresh greenery, to summer, when sunny days bring ripened fruits and warm breezes. Through engaging hands-on experiences, we brought the magic of these seasons to life.

Noticing how hot summer can be and how thirsty we often feel, we decided to set up a lively juice shop and ice cream stand. The students eagerly took on the roles of sellers and buyers, engaging in joyful role-play. As they mixed colors to create their own 'juices,' their imaginations were sparked, fostering creativity and enhancing social skills through cooperative play. To add to the summer excitement, we designed and built DIY boats. The children enthusiastically tested their creations in water, transforming playtime into a delightful "ships on the sea" adventure. This hands-on activity blended creative problem-solving with the wonder of imaginative play.

Our exploration of spring was equally captivating. The children acted out the process of trees blooming, discovered the key elements flowers need to grow and thrive, and observed the fascinating changes as flowers opened. To deepen our exploration of spring, we introduced a playful math activity using play-dough, where students matched the number of seeds to the pots, each labeled with a corresponding number. This activity was both enjoyable and engaging, boosting number recognition, counting skills, and an understanding of the changing seasons.

Each week in our Nursery Tiger Cubs class is designed to ignite curiosity and foster creativity. Through carefully planned activities, our children explore, learn, and thrive in a joyful and supportive environment. By blending fun and discovery, we nurture their natural curiosity and help them uncover the wonders of the world around them.

I am excited to continue this wonderful journey of discovery and growth with our little adventurers!

Year 5 Pupils Excel in Global Perspectives Festival Presentation!

Written by Mr. Matthew, November 2024.

In an exciting display of teamwork and creativity, our Year 5 pupils recently completed a paired presentation on "Festivals Around the World" as part of their Cambridge Primary Global Perspectives curriculum. Each pair researched a unique festival from a different country, exploring its cultural significance and traditions.

Meeting the Stage 5 Global Perspectives success criteria, the pupils used a structured approach in their investigations. As a class we developed questions to guide their research, attempted independent research and recorded their findings, and finally used suitable texts sourced by me to assist their research. Through critical thinking, they compared different festivals, considering factors such as historical origins, local customs, and their opinions on if they would like to take part.

A key highlight was the creative methods used in their presentations. From colourful drawings to well-presented information posters, each pair found unique ways to share their insights with the class. They continue to progress in their presentation skills and work on public speaking.

Overall, the presentations were a fantastic way for pupils to deepen their understanding of diverse cultures and global celebrations. The skills they developed in researching, analysing, and presenting will certainly be valuable as they continue their learning journey. Well done to all our Year 5 pupils for their hard work and enthusiasm!

Enhancing Student Engagement through Innovative Teaching Methods

Written by Mr. Andy, November 2024.

As we dive deeper into our current curriculum, I want to share some innovative teaching approaches we've adopted that are significantly enhancing student engagement and comprehension. Recently, we’ve implemented project-based learning and integrated technology tools like digital storytelling apps. Students have expressed enthusiasm as they collaborate on projects that allow them to explore literature through creative means, such as videos and presentations.

This month, I’d like to shine a spotlight on Prince, whose dedication to reading and writing has inspired us all. Over the past few months, Prince has shown exceptional commitment to improving his skills, diving into a variety of genres and challenging texts. Prince's determination to excel and his willingness to seek feedback have made a significant impact on his progress, and it’s wonderful to see how his hard work is paying off.

In addition, we recently held an inspiring speech activity that encouraged students to express their ideas and connect with their peers. Each student prepared and delivered a short speech on a topic that mattered to them, fostering an environment of respect and support. It was a joy to see everyone engaging with one another's ideas, demonstrating the importance of clear communication and critical thinking. These experiences align with my teaching philosophy, which emphasises the significance of dynamic and interactive learning environments. It’s rewarding to witness the transformation in our classroom, fuelled by curiosity and creativity.

Thank you for your continued support!

A Festive Journey Through STEAM: Designing Christmas Ornaments from Reception to Year 6

Written by Mr. Dickson, November 2024.

This week, our primary students embarked on an exciting series of STEAM lessons. Students from Reception to Year 6 designed and created unique ornaments for the school's Christmas tree. This project not only brought festive cheer but also provided a hands-on learning experience that integrated various STEAM concepts.

Reception: Crafting Paper Tassels and Flowers

The youngest students began their journey by crafting colourful paper tassels. This activity helped them develop fine motor skills and introduced them to cutting and assembling materials. The tassels added a vibrant touch to the Christmas tree.

Year 1 and 2: Creating Paper Snowflakes, Bees, Butterflies, and Birds

Students in Years 1 and 2 explored their creativity by making a variety of paper ornaments, including snowflakes, bees, butterflies, and birds. These activities taught them about symmetry, patterns, and the natural world, while also enhancing their cutting and folding skills.

Year 3 to 6: Designing Paper Windmills, Garlands, and Linked Objects

Older Year 3 to 6 students took on more complex projects, designing paper windmills, garlands, and objects based on different paper linkages. These activities introduced them to concepts of engineering and mechanics, as they learned how to create moving parts and interconnected structures. The students' creations added dynamic and intricate elements to the Christmas tree.

BIS Culinary Highlights: Cultural Integration on the Dining Table

Written by Ms. Miki, November 2024.

The BIS culinary team participated in the 6th International Culinary Competition held by the Canadian International Education Group on November 24th (last Sunday). Congratulations to our culinary team and their creation for winning the Best Creative Presentation Award! The dishes our school entered in the competition included "Bamboo Ascending," "Colorful Flower Season," and "Your Pathway to Top Schools." Each dish is filled with heartfelt intentions, and the production process adheres to BIS standards.

At BIS, our kitchen is not only a place for cooking delicious food but also a stage for cultural exchange. As the only canteen in Guangzhou's foreign schools that meets halal standards, our kitchen ensures that every student enjoys food that is not only delicious but also strictly adheres to religious beliefs and dietary norms. This feature not only reflects our respect for multiculturalism but also highlights the school's high regard for food safety and quality control.

Given that our school has students from over 45 different countries and regions, their dietary preferences and habits vary greatly, which poses higher demands on our kitchen team. To meet the needs of students from different cultural backgrounds, our culinary team carefully designs a fusion menu every week, striving to convey a pursuit of health and nutrition through each dish and allowing students from different countries to find the taste of home. In addition, to allow students to experience the global food culture, our kitchen introduces a special dish representing a specific country every week. From the rich sauce of Italian pasta to the stimulating flavors of Thai Tom Yum Goong, from the delicate taste of Japanese sushi to the crisp and delicious Mexican tortilla chips, these diverse dishes not only enrich the students' palates but also serve as a window for them to understand the world.

In summary, at BIS, we are not just preparing lunch; we are creating an environment filled with love and care, where students can learn and grow while enjoying the wonderful flavors from around the world.
