Fun Spelling Challenge
Team PK Final
With the order of the host, the first part of the finals was officially opened. In the listening and spelling div, the contestants need to catch the pronunciation of the words pronounced by the host with their keen sense of hearing and quickly search for the corresponding spelling in their minds. In the Picture Spelling session, the contestants were asked to spell out the corresponding words according to the content of the pictures by displaying a vivid and interesting picture.
Immediately after that, the competition entered the more exciting jumble spelling and paraphrase spelling sessions. In Jumble Spelling, the host will give some random combinations of letters, and the contestants need to quickly rearrange these letters to form the correct word within the limited time. This requires a solid foundation in English, a quick mind and quick reflexes. In the word interpretation and spelling session, the word interpretation or example sentences are given, so that the contestants can spell the correct word according to the prompts.
As the game progressed, the third session, ‘You Tell Me, I Guess’, brought teamwork to a new climax. In this session, each team sent two players, one of whom was responsible for describing the words or phrases shown on the screen, while the other guessed the answer based on the description. The describers needed to use language skills to avoid saying key words, while the guessers needed to listen carefully and quickly capture the key information.
The fourth session, Theme Word Spelling, brought the competition to a fever pitch. In this session, each team had to work together to spell out a word related to the theme. The moderator would give hints on the theme, such as ‘nature’, ‘science and technology’, etc., and the contestants had to discuss and divide the work to spell out a word that fits the theme within the time limit.
The final group session of the finals, Ants on the Move, brought the competition to a close. In this session, players had to get letter stickers by spelling words and try to spell as many words as possible. For every correct word spelt out, points were earned for the team.
The last session was an exciting solo challenge called ‘One Stop to the Finish’. In this session, students had to compete with their vocabulary and listening comprehension skills in an intense listening and spelling round-robin, where each participant stood in the centre of the stage and had to react quickly to the words randomly read out by the host, not only spelling them accurately, but also trying to stay calm and focused in order to cope with the more complex and difficult challenges to come.
The competition illustrated the IB philosophy of ‘Growing together, Challenging together’. The competition illustrated the essence of IB's philosophy of education, ‘Cooperate, Grow, Challenge! Through the competition, the children pursued academic excellence and took a solid step forward in character building and ability development.
During the competition, the children were trained to become Communicators, who learnt how to express themselves clearly and accurately, how to communicate effectively in a team, and how to show confidence and composure in different occasions through various forms of interactions such as listening, speaking and spelling. These skills enable them to excel in their daily lives and lay a solid foundation for their future careers.
Meanwhile, during the preparation and competition process, we encourage the children to become Risk-Takers, who are endowed with unlimited courage and determination to stand up on stage and face unknown challenges without flinching.
In addition, the competition also enhances the children's ability to become hard-thinking Thinkers. In the team competition, the young players not only rely on their individual knowledge accumulation, but also use wisdom and strategy to work closely with their teammates to light up the light of hope for victory. They learnt how to stay calm in front of complex problems, how to use critical and innovative thinking to find solutions, and how to bring out the strengths of everyone in the team to achieve a win-win situation.
