去伦敦艺术殿堂,追寻更有生命力的美——对话25届艺术方向毕业生Fiona

继2024届毕业生实现伦艺突破之后,广州斐特思25届毕业生延续了伦敦艺术大学100%录取的佳绩。伦敦艺术大学素有“艺术教育界的哈佛”之称,至今连续六年蝉联QS世界大学艺术类TOP2。恰逢录取丰收之季,我们邀请了本届优秀毕业生Fiona,来和大家分享她的艺术成长经历。

Following the Class of 2024 breakthrough at being admitted to the University of the Arts London, the 2025 graduates of Fettes College Guangzhou have continued the streak of a 100% acceptance rate to the prestigious institution. Today we invite Fiona, an outstanding art graduate to share her growth journey with us.

什么时候开始有走国际艺术升学这个想法的呢?


因为我的家人从事艺术设计工作,所以我的美术启蒙特别早。自三四岁还在幼儿园我就开始接触美术学习了,到现在一直没有间断过,也考取了素描八级和速写九级,在色彩学方面的美术基本功非常扎实。我从初三开始决定走国际艺术升学的路线,想去世界各地接触不同的艺术形式。

When did you decide to apply to overseas art universities?


Because my family is engaged in art design work, I was exposed to art very early. I started learning art in kindergarten when I was three or four years old and have never stopped. I have also passed the eighth grade in sketching and the ninth grade in quick sketching during level examination, and my basic skills in colour theory are very solid. I pursued an international art education path from the third year of middle school, hoping to experience different art forms worldwide.

有没有哪位艺术家或艺术作品给你的艺术道路带来很深的影响?


我想是以反叛疯狂著称的英国设计师亚历山大·麦昆和行为艺术家马丽娜·阿布拉莫维奇。在1999年的春夏秀上,麦昆亲自操作两旁的机械臂,向站在旋转舞台中间的白裙模特喷射颜料,最终在秀场舞台上创造出了一条独一无二的“喷墨裙”。这种将服装设计的过程以表演的形式展现给观众的情景,带给我极大震撼,让我开始思考珠宝设计和表演是否也能结合在一起。

Has any artist or work of art profoundly influenced your artistic path?


I think it would be Alexander McQueen, the British designer known for his rebellious and crazy designs, and Marina Abramović, the legendary performance artist. At the Spring/Summer 1999 show, McQueen operated the mechanical arms to spray paint onto the model in a white dress on the rotating stage, eventually creating a unique "inkjet dress" on the runway. This way of presenting the clothing design process to the audience in the form of a performance greatly shocked me. It made me wonder whether jewellery design and performance could also be combined.

马丽娜·阿布拉莫维奇的行为艺术表演则让我对艺术的互动性产生了深入思考。长久以来观众和艺术之间的互动方式是观看,但马丽娜的行为艺术表演及互动性艺术装置让观众也成为了艺术的一部分。我的作品集其中一个项目便是受到她的启发,以互动性为特点去设计当代珠宝。

Marina Abramović's performance art has led me to contemplate the interactivity of art deeply. The interaction between the audience and art was merely viewing for a long time. But Marina's performance art and interactive art installations have made the audience a part of the art. One of the projects in my portfolio was inspired by her, featuring interactivity in contemporary jewellery design.

马丽娜·阿布拉莫维奇代表作《艺术家在场》:

在展览的三个月内,每天持续八个小时坐在椅子上与超过1500位观众面对面。图中为一袭红衣的她与曾经的恋人乌雷在展览上重逢:她先是惊讶,微笑,然后流泪,伸出手,他们紧握双手,随后他离开。戏剧性的一幕令人动容,在社交媒体上引发数百万人共鸣。

"The Artist Is Present":

For three months of the exhibition, she sat on a chair for eight hours a day, face to face, gazing at more than 1,500 visitors. The picture shows her reunion with her former lover Ulay at the exhibition: she was first surprised, then smiled, shed tears, and they held hands tightly, then Ulay left. This dramatic scene was touching and resonated with millions of people on social media.

在作品集中你比较满意的代表性作品是什么?能否详细介绍一下创作灵感和创作过程?


我最满意的作品是一件名为“The Beauty of Mutilation”的胸针。它的灵感来源于我观察到患有白癜风或四肢残疾的人总是在生活中受到异样目光的“洗礼”。我用泛白的黄玛瑙表达人皮肤上的白癜风,创作中式主题的珠宝配饰。我想通过这个作品展示美的多样性——譬如残缺美、留白美、内在美。如果这个作品能够使人们减少对外貌的偏见,我会非常欣慰。

What is your most satisfying representative work in your portfolio?

Please elaborate on the inspiration and the creative process behind it.


My most satisfying work is a brooch named "The Beauty of Mutilation". Its inspiration comes from my observation that people with vitiligo or limb disabilities are always subject to strange looks. I used yellow agate with an off-white pattern to represent vitiligo on human skin and created a series of Chinese-themed jewellery accessories. I want to showcase the diversity of beauty through this work - such as the beauty of imperfection, the beauty of blank space, and the inner beauty. I would be gratified if this artwork could help reduce people's prejudice against appearance.

在创作的过程中都遇到过什么样的挑战?

你是如何克服的呢?


在“Lie and Throbbing”项目中,我用到了非常多元的综合材料,就会涉及到要做各种水泥和石膏的翻模实验、不同面料的组合测试,以及3D建模等。基本上作品里的每一个细节都需要经过反复的实验,很考验耐心与韧性。我平常做珠宝设计比较多,对缝纫和打板不是那么熟悉,在这方面Esther老师给了我很多指导和帮助。我非常感谢Esther老师,因为在忙碌的申请季里做作品集确实免不了会有焦虑的时刻,她就像我的心灵导师,在精神上给我很多的鼓励和支持,让我可以在实验需要不断推翻重来的时候也以平常心对待,继续打磨作品细节。

What kinds of challenges have you encountered during the creative process?

How did you overcome them?


In the "Lie and Throbbing" project, I used various comprehensive materials, which involved conducting experiments on cement and gypsum moulds, testing different fabric combinations, 3D modelling, etc. Every detail in the artwork required repeated experiments, which was quite a test of patience and resilience. Meanwhile, I'm better at jewellery design and unfamiliar with sewing and pattern making. In this regard, my teacher Ms Esther Xia gave me a lot of guidance and help. During the busy application season, it is inevitable to have anxious moments when making a portfolio. I am very grateful to Ms Esther Xia, as she was like my mentality mentor, giving me a lot of encouragement and emotional support, allowing me to constantly start over in experiments with a calm heart and continue refining the artwork's details.

Fiona的部分实验记录&作品制作过程


回顾在广州斐特思的学习生活,有什么特别的回忆?


我有了解到有些走艺术升学道路的学生会选择脱产,到艺术机构完成作品集和大学申请。但我很庆幸能够在斐特思校园里去享受学习,这是一个让高中生活更完整圆满的选择。我们12年级的学习氛围特别好,班里都是成绩很好但学习依旧很认真的同学。在他们的影响下,我好像也变得更有野心。为了锻炼自己的沟通能力和策划能力,我在加入学生会时特意没有竞选艺术相关的职位,而是担任活动总负责人一职。目前我和学生会的小伙伴们正在紧锣密鼓地筹备着艺术节、电影节和校园慈善活动,希望能给自己的高中生涯画下一个完美的句号。

Do you have any special memories of your study and life at FCG?


I knew that some students who pursue an art-oriented academic path choose to take a break from school to complete their portfolios and university applications at art tutoring institutions. However, I am very fortunate to enjoy my studies at FCG, which is a choice that makes my high school life more complete. The learning atmosphere in G12 is particularly motivating; all my classmates have excellent grades but still study hard. Under their influence, I become more ambitious. When I joined the student council, I deliberately did not run for an art-related position. Instead, I took on the role of the event coordinator to exercise my communication and planning skills. Student council members and I are working intensively on preparing for the art festival, film festival, and campus charity event, hoping to bring a perfect conclusion to my high school life.

给艺术方向的学弟学妹们一些建议?


从我个人的申请经历中总结的话,我有四点很深刻的体会想要和学弟学妹们分享。其实国外艺术院校的教授们更注重我们做作品集的过程,而不是最终出来的成品有多么完美。因此在设计稿阶段最好多使用手绘而不是电绘,展现自己扎实的美术基本功;在作品创作过程中尽可能亲自动手制作,多记录实验过程,才能让教授看见你出色的动手能力。在申请院校时,选择的专业数量不宜过多,否则只会给教授留下对个人未来发展方向没有清晰规划的印象。最后就是希望学弟学妹们能够尽情享受校园生活,才能源源不断地在琐碎的日常中汲取灵感、在平凡的幸福中收获力量。

Any advice for the younger students majoring in art?


Based on my application experience, I have four insights that I would like to share with my younger schoolmates. University professors pay more attention to the process of making portfolios rather than the perfection of the final artwork. Therefore, it is better to use hand drawing rather than digital drawing during the design draft stage to showcase your solid basic art skills. Try to make them yourself as much as possible during the creation and production process and record the experimental process frequently so that the professors can see your real hands-on ability. When applying for universities, the number of chosen majors in one school should not be more than three. Otherwise, it will only leave the impression that you have no clear plan for your future development direction. Finally, I hope all my younger schoolmates can fully enjoy campus life, continuously draw inspiration from trivial daily life, and gain strength from ordinary happiness.
