Following the 2024 graduates' admission to Oxford and Cambridge and 100% of the graduates being admitted to the QS top 25 universities, FCG students have made comprehensive breakthroughs in admissions to top universities in the United States and Europe during the 2025 graduation season. Meanwhile, 2025 graduate Wenqi has been admitted to the University of Hong Kong's science master class double degree programme. Today, we invite Wenqi to share her growth journey with us.
香港大学(HKU)素有亚洲“常春藤”之称,是香港历史最悠久的院校。2025年,HKU在QS世界大学排名中位列第17名。HKU的科研专才-本硕连读项目(6688 Science Master Class) 旨在培育新一代科研人员,让学生在中国科学院院士、美国国家科学院外籍院士等一对一指导下尽展学术潜能,将创新科学知识转化为具有广泛影响力的研究和应用,项目还会与其他世界名校如斯坦福、剑桥、耶鲁等进行合作学习。该项目在全球仅招纳26人。
The University of Hong Kong (HKU), known as the "Ivy League" of Asia, is the oldest higher learning institution in Hong Kong. In the 2025 QS World University Rankings, HKU ranked 17th. The 6688 Science Master Class programme is a direct-entry program for undergraduate and postgraduate studies that aims to cultivate the next generation of researchers. Under the one-on-one guidance of academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and foreign academicians from the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, students can fully develop their academic potential and transform innovative scientific knowledge into research. The programme also collaborates with other world-renowned universities such as Stanford, Cambridge, and Yale for joint learning. Only 26 students are recruited globally for this programme every year.
我的数学启蒙并非传统意义上的天赋叙事,中途有一段时间还曾放弃过数学学习。初中后,随着我抽象思维能力的提升,我开始享受思考的过程,有了更多感悟,才慢慢地爱上了这门学科。在我看来,学数学是打破旧认知,建构新认知的过程。我曾以为只要有严密的逻辑和充足的论证,命题总能被证明,达到源头与终点。但“哥德尔不完备定理”改变了我的认知,因为任何形式系统都存在既不能证实也不能证伪的命题。这启示我们——真理探索应是开放性的创新过程。
Why did you choose mathematics as a major for all your university applications?
My journey with mathematics was not the typical narrative of innate talent; in fact, there was a time when I considered giving it up. However, after junior high school, as my abstract thinking abilities improved, I began to enjoy the process of problem-solving and gained deeper insights, ultimately falling in love with the subject. Learning mathematics involves breaking down old understandings and constructing new ones. I once believed that any proposition could be proven if supported by rigorous logic and sufficient proof. However, Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems altered my perspective, revealing that there are propositions within any formal system that cannot be proven or disproven. This teaches us that the pursuit of truth should be an open and innovative process.
就像毕达哥拉斯所言,“在数学的天地里,重要的不是我们知道什么,而是我们怎样知道。”如果在数学领域里发现一个命题通过现有的方法、公理和定理一直得不到证明,我们就可以尝试扩展现有的方法和公理体系来进一步研究,不断填补认知断层中的空白。此外,数学是基础性学科,能为别的学科作铺垫,所以在申请不同的大学时,我无一例外都选择了数学专业。
As Pythagoras stated, "In the realm of mathematics, what matters is not what we know but how we know it." If a proposition remains unproven despite all existing methods, axioms, and theorems, we can expand our current processes and axiomatic systems for further exploration, continually filling gaps in our understanding. Moreover, mathematics is a foundational discipline that lays the groundwork for other subjects. Thus, I consistently chose a mathematics major when applying to various universities.
做好每一道真题让我在学习中事半功倍。真题凝聚着众多出题人的智慧,每一道真题的推导思路我都会反复琢磨,吃透了真题也就吃透了知识的底层逻辑。此外,我会格外关注每一道错题,每一道错题都是我提高的机会,把每一个漏洞都补上,在学术的海洋里我才能够走得更远。阅读和数学相关的经典书籍,比如《How to Think Like Mathematician》《How to Solve It》,让我受益良多。用几何方法来寻找三角形的质心,是我在《How to Solve It》中获取的新思路。脑子中每冒出一个新的思路和方法都会让我激动好几天。希望我总结出的个人学习方法能够帮助到更多斐特思的学弟学妹。
Do you have any exclusive
learning methods?
I take every exercise seriously, which has significantly enhanced my study efficiency. Past papers reflect the wisdom of many exam setters. By deeply analyzing the reasoning behind each question, I can understand the underlying logic of the knowledge being tested. Additionally, I pay close attention to every mistake I make; each error represents an opportunity for improvement. By addressing these gaps, I can advance further in my academic journey. I also enjoy reading classic mathematics-related books, such as "How to Think Like a Mathematician" and "How to Solve It." For example, using geometric methods to find the centroid of a triangle is a novel idea I learned from these texts. Each new idea and method excite me for days, and I hope my summarized learning methods can assist younger FCG students.
高中择校期间,我一直想找一所具备升学指导优势的学校。斐特思作为一所新开校,起初并没有在我的择校清单中。但在陪我的好朋友来斐特思探校时却收获了意外惊喜。探校期间我特意提出了:“能不能跟你们的升学指导老师聊一聊。”在与升学老师交谈之后,我感觉升学老师经验丰富且责任心强:虽然是第一次见面,但对于我个人的优劣势分析却像是跟我认识了很久。借着“非理性”的感觉,我果断选择入读斐特思。今天回头看,当时的决定还真有些“冲动”,但一切又都非常值得。
Why did you choose to study at FCG?
Before joining FCG, I was searching for a school with strong college counseling. Initially, FCG, being newly established, wasn't on my list of choices. However, during a visit with a friend, I was pleasantly surprised. When I asked, "Can I talk to the college counseling teacher?" and had a conversation with the UGO teacher, I felt their experience and dedication. It was as if they understood my strengths and weaknesses immediately, despite it being our first meeting. Driven by this "irrational" feeling, I enrolled in FCG without hesitation. Looking back, my decision may have seemed impulsive, but it was undoubtedly worthwhile.
我个人的竞赛和课外项目经历都比较少,所以在文书撰写的过程中,升学导师Sisi建议我重点放大A-level成绩的优势,并展示自己丰富的课外数学知识储备。在港大的最终面试准备阶段,Sisi老师几乎每天都陪我做面试练习,细致到我的体态、语速和英文口语的表达,直到我把“面试”当作“交谈”。Sisi老师和我强调,在面试的时候最重要的是用放松的心态展现真实的自己。由内而外散发的自信,会帮助你得到面试官的认可。
Any impressive story during the university application process?
I have limited experience in competitions and extracurricular projects. Therefore, while writing my application documents, Ms. Sisi suggested I highlight my strong A-level grades and showcase my extensive extracurricular knowledge in mathematics. During the final interview preparations for HKU, she practiced with me almost daily, refining details like my posture, speaking pace, and oral English expression until I viewed the "interview" as a "conversation." Ms. Sisi emphasized that the most important aspect of the interview is to present my true self with a relaxed mindset. The confidence that radiates from within can help me earn the interviewers' recognition.

很巧的是,我在18岁的最后一天收到了港大的录取信。梦校offer比19岁生日蛋糕先来到我的面前,还没来得及许愿,愿望就成真了,我想这会是我永生难忘的回忆。
Coincidentally, I received the admission letter from the University of Hong Kong on the last day of my 18th year. The offer from my dream school arrived just before my 19th birthday cake. Before I could even make a wish, my wish had already come true. This moment will be an unforgettable memory for me throughout my life.
机会一定是主动争取,

一定不要放弃,
积极转变思路寻找突破口,
就能迎来转机。
我大学申请群面的题目是 “纯数是有用的还是没用的?”这是一个偏哲学辩证的问题。当时教授一闭麦,我还没反应过来,其他面试者就已经开始抢答了。面试一共六人,大家都想当正方。前面第一第二位发言者已经把常见的经典论点都讲完了,第三第四位持正方立场发言的面试者基本词穷,只能绞尽脑汁编观点,所以作为最后一个发言的我就立刻变换成当反方的立场找论点,成功突围了面试。
Any interview advice
for younger students?
Opportunities must be actively sought, not passively awaited. If you find yourself at a disadvantage, never give up. Change your mindset and seek breakthroughs to turn the situation around.
During my HKU group interview, the topic was "Is pure mathematics useful or useless?" It was a philosophical and dialectical question. Other interviewees began answering as soon as the professor closed the microphone, and I struggled to react. Six of us were present, and everyone leaned toward the affirmative side. The first two speakers covered all the common arguments, leading the subsequent speakers to scramble for points. As the last speaker, I decided to take the opposite stance to find unique arguments, successfully breaking through the interview.
