2024-25 Academic Year,

AIC Reading Month | Reading: Igniting the Power of Thought

本次活动所围绕的多本书籍——《The Hunger Games》《American Born Chinese》《雷雨》《The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas》——均为学生当前在英语、人文学科、戏剧与中文课上正在学习的核心文本。

In an age of information overload and screen saturation, reading remains one of the most powerful ways to understand the world and connect with oneself. To ignite students’ passion for reading, AIC proudly launched its Reading Month series of activities this April.

Unlike previous years where reading events such as book appreciation sessions, book-floating festivals, and reading competitions were held independently with limited student participation, this year’s Reading Month marked a major breakthrough—for the first time, reading activities were deeply integrated into classroom learning, transforming reading from an extracurricular engagement into an essential part of academic study.

The featured books—The Hunger Games, American Born Chinese, Thunderstorm, and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas—are all core texts currently studied by students in English, Humanities, Drama, and Chinese classes. Through interdisciplinary design and curriculum linkage, students not only gained deeper understanding in class, but also applied their learning in the various challenges and projects throughout Reading Month.

In addition, the Book Cover Design Exhibition was more than just a showcase; it was an authentic integration of key components from the IG curriculum’s Graphic Communication and Printmaking. Students were encouraged to express their reading comprehension and creativity through visual language, achieving a meaningful connection between literature and the arts.

This year’s Reading Month was collaboratively planned by five dedicated teachers—Jing, Julianne, Jasmine, Demi, and Wendy—and brought together the passion and creativity of the entire school community. Students from IG2 and DP1 contributed to the planning of two key events—The Hunger Games Scavenger Hunt and Choice Board Challenge—showcasing their leadership and creativity in authentic learning contexts. The other events—including the English and Chinese Battle of Books, the Book Cover Design Exhibition, and the Audiobook Industry Guest Lecture—were thoughtfully organized by the five teachers, reflecting a high level of professional guidance and interdisciplinary integration in teaching and learning.

The Hunger Games Scavenger Hunt

The activity was designed and planned by students from IG2 and DP1. From the 27 chapters of the novel, they selected one key quote from each, printed them out, and “hid” them in various corners of the campus—beside elevator doors, between library shelves, on the cafeteria counter, and more. Participants had to keep a keen eye out in their daily routines, record the quotes they found, and arrange them in the correct chapter order to complete the challenge.

The search process offered repeated opportunities to revisit and reinterpret the plot, while also honing observation, logical thinking, and patience.

Congratulations to the students who successfully unlocked all 27 chapters and won the challenge!

Choice Board Challenge

This interdisciplinary challenge was thoughtfully designed by IG2 and DP1 students around The Hunger Games, incorporating seven academic subjects: Art, Music, Math, English, Science, Psychology, and Business/Economics. Each subject featured three original questions that cleverly connected the novel’s content with key subject concepts—for example, probability and survival strategies in Math, the creation of tension through music, character motivation analysis in Psychology, sponsorship systems as reflections of real-world economics in Business, and the physics behind energy transfer and arrow trajectories in Science.

Participants carried a “Reading Passport” and, once the music began, raced to different subject stations to complete the challenges. Each correct answer earned a stamp, and the more stamps collected, the higher the chance of winning. The time limit and background music not only added a sense of urgency but also brought excitement and engagement to the event, transforming reading into a thrilling and game-like experience.

15 students stood out in the challenge and won the Reading Arena Awards!
