Recently, students and families at Britannia International School Guangzhou (BIS) have been actively engaged in meaningful learning and collaboration. From our youngest Reception learners making impressive strides in handwriting, to Year 3 students planning a charitable yard sale, and parents participating in insightful workshops — the entire BIS community continues to grow together. It’s been a rewarding and lively season across our school community.

Reception Lion Cubs: Celebrating Student Progress in Handwriting

One of the proudest moments as a young learners teacher is to see progress from students. At the beginning of the year, most students had trouble writing letters free hand. We practice every day starting with tracing pages and moving on to free hand writing. We use different techniques to improve students motor skills such as: drawing, tracing letters, cutting, interactive white boards etc. I also give students writing practice to take every weekend so that they can improve gradually at home. The hard work from teachers and students is starting to show as students can write more clearly using free hand with no assistance needed. We continue to practice every day in hopes that students will grow into excellent writers for the future.

Helping Our Local Community With Year 3

In the context of Global Perspectives, Year 3 students have been exploring the topic of charity. It is essential for students to understand how fortunate they are, as many children around the world, including those in China, lack access to even the most basic necessities. Initially, we examined the various ways in which charitable organizations can support children in need. We then engaged in discussions about the root causes of issues such as homelessness and poverty. It was truly inspiring to witness the students' deep empathy, particularly considering the mature nature of the topic.

The central activity involved designing a charity event aimed at raising funds for a worthy cause. The students proposed a variety of creative ideas, showcasing their initiative and enthusiasm. In the classroom, it is often most beneficial to apply learning through practical experiences. As a result, we decided to organize a yard sale where students could donate unwanted toys and books, which would then be sold to other students. The proceeds from this event will be donated to a local charity.

After discussing the idea with Mr. Mark, he fully supported the initiative, and we are now planning to hold the event in the near future. This will not only serve as a valuable charitable endeavor but also offer students the opportunity to practice their English in a real-world setting. We are all eagerly looking forward to this upcoming event.

Partnering with Parents | BIS Hosted Parent Workshops

From March to May 2025, Britannia International School Guangzhou (BIS) hosted a series of parent workshops, supported by our Student Services team and academic departments. These sessions helped families better understand how to support their children through key educational transitions.

Workshop topics included:

Navigating Educational Choices and Maximizing School Support

Thriving Through High School

Navigating Lower Secondary

Transition from EYFS to Primary

Mental Health Lectures for Primary and Secondary Students

Each workshop offered practical advice and meaningful insights. Parents participated actively and appreciated the opportunity to connect with educators.

At BIS, we value strong family partnerships. More workshops are planned in the future to support our school community and students’ growth.
