At BIS, every student—from our youngest in Early Years to our teens in Secondary—has spent the year exploring, growing, and discovering who they are. This week, we’ve been reflecting on those special classroom moments: diving into ocean-themed learning, confidently expressing themselves in both English and Chinese, and creating thoughtful surprises for Mother’s Day. These heartwarming snapshots beautifully capture their journey over the year.

For our Primary and Secondary students, this has been a year of both challenge and achievement. From science experiments and English writing to project-based learning and team presentations, they’ve not only developed strong academic skills but also grown in critical thinking, collaboration, and confidence.

As the school year draws to a close, we’re incredibly proud of every student. Their journey at BIS is just beginning—and the future holds so much more to discover.

Exploring the Ocean: A Fun-Filled Underwater Adventure in Pre-Nursery Chinese Class

Written by Ms. Renee, May 2025.

Recently in our Pre-Nursery Chinese class, we've been diving into the magical world under the sea! Through a rich mix of visuals, songs, activities, and picture books, we’ve explored a variety of sea creatures, focusing on some of the most unique ones to learn about their fun facts and distinct features.

The children have done an excellent job—they can name the sea animals, describe their characteristics, and even recognise them accurately. For instance, at the beginning of the unit, many of them would confuse octopuses with jellyfish. But after learning how many arms an octopus has, we practiced identifying them by counting their limbs. This also helped the children remember its other name in Chinese—“eight-legged fish” .

As we got to know more fascinating sea creatures, I also wove in lessons on numbers and shapes. One of the books we read, Mr Seahorse’s Big Search, follows a seahorse dad on a journey to find his baby. Along the way, he meets various sea animals in different quantities, and the children were fully engaged with the twists and turns of the story. It left a strong impression of numbers and sea creatures in their minds. Another fun activity involved four different fish shapes, where the children had to match each fish to the correct shape tank. We also enjoyed hands-on craft time—using visual guides, the children pieced together parts of sea creatures to form a complete animal. This helped them practise observation and improve their fine motor skills.

Exciting English Adventures at BIS nursery Lion Cubs

Written by Ms. Paris May 2025.

This term, our young learners at BIS nursery Lion Cubs have made wonderful progress in English communication through fun and interactive activities.

1. Interactive Learning

Our teachers created engaging English lessons where students practiced real conversations. In one popular activity, a student sat in the "hot seat" while classmates asked questions in English like "What's your favorite color?" This built confidence in speaking.

2. Circle Time Fun

During our special circle activity, each child held an everyday object like a marker or water bottle. Going around the circle, every student introduced their item in English, saying "My name is xxx . I have a water bottle." This helped them learn new words while practicing sentence structure.

3. Partner Practice

Students paired up for "chat time," having simple English conversations about their day, favorite foods, or toys. Teachers provided helpful phrases, and soon children were chatting naturally!

4. Growing Confidence

We're proud of how our students now use English more freely in class. From asking "May I have the crayons?" to telling friends "I like your drawing," their communication skills shine every day.

At BIS nursery Lion Cubs, we make language learning active and joyful. Our kindergarteners aren't just studying English - they're using it!

Learning to Speak Up wih Nursery Tiger Cubs: Exploring Likes and Dislikes in Chinese Class

Written by Ms. Lenka, May 2025.

This week in our Chinese class, we kicked off a new theme: Confident Communicators – What I Like and Don’t Like. In this unit, we’re placing a stronger focus on encouraging children to express themselves. We started by exploring the ideas of "likes" and "dislikes." The children practiced the sentence pattern “Qǐngwèn, nǐ xǐhuān… ma?” ("Do you like...?") with their friends, using a fun reaction game to reinforce their speaking skills. We also encouraged them to make new friends, and had them take “best friend buddy photos” while mimicking cartoon characters—so much fun and full of teamwork! To take it further, we organised a special “buffet” activity in class. The children prepared all kinds of food items themselves, including vegetables, fruits, and meats. Then they chose what they liked to “eat” at the buffet. This hands-on experience not only developed their fine motor skills but also supported their ability to express personal preferences and make independent choices.

Love, Creativity, and Ocean Discovery in Reception Tigers

Written by Ms. Bear, May 2025.

At BIS, our campus is always full of passion and energy. This week, our Reception Tigers have been as busy as ever! With Mother’s Day just around the corner, our little Lions have been preparing a special surprise for their mums. The children created hand-drawn cards, decorated mirrors for their beautiful mums, and added lovely touches to photos of themselves with their mothers. Though the drawings may be simple, they express deep and heartfelt love from the children.

We also became little “Ocean Explorers” and discovered the wonders of the octopus!

Fun Facts About Octopuses: Did you know octopuses don’t just have eight legs—they have eight “arms”! Each arm has suction cups that can grab things individually. They’re also colour-changing masters of disguise. When in danger, they can release a cloud of ink—like a smoke bomb—to escape in the blink of an eye!

We even watched a fun clip from “Finding Dory”, featuring a very clever octopus character. To wrap up our ocean adventure, the children each made their very own octopus hat to take home!

Bringing Chinese Poetry to Life for Reception Lion Cubs This Spring

Written by Ms. Minnie, May 2025.

Teaching Chinese poems to kindergarten kids during springtime can be a delightful and engaging experience with plenty of hands-on activities that explore seasonal changes, nature, and new life.

Spring-themed poems are vibrant, full of imagery, and easy to connect with nature. Because of Young children have short attention spans, so the activities need to be engaging and interactive. Chinese poetry, especially classical ones might be too complex, but maybe there are simpler ones.

First, I should consider the selection of poems. They need to be short, with simple language and clear imagery. Poems about nature or animals might work well because kids can relate to them.

Next, how to present the poems. Visual aids are crucial for young kids. Using pictures or videos that depict the poem's scenes can help them understand. Maybe acting out the poem or using hand gestures. Repetition is key in learning, so repeating the poem over days might help. But it shouldn't be boring. Maybe vary the activities each time—singing one day, drawing another day, acting it out another time. Involving movement, like clapping to the rhythm, could keep them engaged.

Children develop an early appreciation for Chinese poetry through play and exploration, fostering linguistic, cultural, and creative growth. The key is to prioritize joy and curiosity over rote memorization, laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

A Year to Remember: Celebrating Our Journey in Year 4

Written by Mr. Yaseen, May 2025.

I write this letter, during our final academic hurdle for the year. With year end assessments beginning in exactly 2 weeks, I write this article with a bittersweet feeling, as this final examination also signals the end of our time together. In Year 4. It has been thoroughly enjoyable. Possibly, the most satisfying year in my teaching life. The turnaround in our class has been quite remarkable, and students have shown their dedication across a variety of fields.

For steam, they had showcased their ingenuity and creativity with their hands, by building cities using recyclable materials. This work was showcased during our Steam and rt exhibition.

International day was commemorated with a stunning performance, incorporating Korean pop, British folk, and finally American hip hop influence. All the countless hours spent rehearsing for the event, was given a standing applause by those in attendance.

Math, provided BIS with its first opportunity to participate in the prestigious ‘Math Conceptition’ event, held in Hong Kong. The results proved extremely fruitful, as Primary contributed to 4 students who had achieved merit placements, including Year 4’s Danil, who placed highest with a silver medal.

Personally, we have shared many birthday celebrations over the past month, as our class is filled with many April/May birthday babies. We have grown together, shared together and created memories that will forever be a part of my educational Journey.

I absolutely love this class, and could not be more proud to call myself the Year 4 teacher.

Reflecting on the Year: Key Lessons to Carry Forward

Written by Mr. Jay , May 2025.

As we approach the end of another school year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on all that we’ve learned, not just in the classroom, but in life. Every year brings its challenges and triumphs, and the lessons we take away shape who we become. Here are a few key lessons that we can all reflect on as we wrap up this academic year:

1. The Importance of Perseverance

Whether it was tackling a tough project, studying for a difficult exam, or overcoming personal hurdles, this year taught us that success doesn’t always come easily. Perseverance is key. It's not about always getting it right on the first try but about pushing through challenges and learning from mistakes. The ability to keep going, even when things seem tough, is one of the most valuable skills we can carry into the future.

2. Time Management and Balance

One of the hardest lessons this year has been balancing schoolwork with other responsibilities. Learning to manage time effectively, whether it’s setting aside time to study, making space for extracurriculars, or just taking time for ourselves, helps reduce stress and makes life more manageable. As we move forward, we must remember that success is about finding balance, not just cramming in every task.

3. The Power of Collaboration

We’ve learned that working together can lead to amazing results. Whether in group projects or team activities, collaboration has shown us that sharing ideas, listening to others, and respecting different perspectives can strengthen our learning. The value of teamwork goes beyond school; it’s a skill that will serve us in any future career or relationship.

4. Embracing Mistakes as Opportunities to Grow

We all make mistakes. But this year, we’ve also learned that mistakes aren’t something to fear; they’re opportunities to learn. Whether it’s a missed assignment, a bad grade, or a failed attempt, what matters most is how we respond. Each mistake is a stepping stone toward improvement, and each challenge we face is a chance to grow stronger and wiser.

5. Gratitude and Reflection

In the rush of assignments and activities, it’s easy to overlook the people and moments that made our year special. Taking time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished, the friends we’ve made, and the teachers who’ve supported us helps us appreciate our journey. Gratitude encourages a positive mindset, and reflection allows us to set goals for the future, with a clearer sense of purpose.

6. Self-Care is Essential

Finally, we’ve learned that taking care of ourselves is not just a luxury, it’s a necessity. Mental, emotional, and physical well-being are all equally important, and they impact our ability to learn, grow, and enjoy life. The school year may have been challenging, but it’s essential to prioritize rest, hobbies, and self-compassion to recharge for the next adventure.

As we wrap up this year and look ahead, let’s take these lessons with us, remembering that growth doesn’t stop when the bell rings for summer break. The future is full of possibilities, and with the lessons we’ve learned, we’re more prepared than ever to embrace whatever comes next.
