TOK Exhibition

Thursday, 4th September, 2025, AIC held the TOK (Theory of Knowledge) Exhibition, where the students presented in-depth projects exploring the nature of knowledge and how it is acquired and applied. It is designed to assess a student’s ability to apply TOK concepts to real-world scenarios and personal experiences. The TOK Exhibition aims to bring TOK into the real world, helping students explore how knowledge manifests and matters in their everyday lives. It encourages the students to demonstrate understanding of how knowledge is developed, used, interpreted, and communicated; reflect on the relevance of TOK concepts beyond the classroom; and connect abstract TOK ideas to concrete objects, events, or experiences. The exhibition helps students see the real-life relevance of abstract TOK ideas, develop skills in critical thinking, self-reflection, and knowledge evaluation, and understand that knowledge is not just academic but plays a vital role in their personal, cultural, and ethical lives.

TOK Coordinator Yashvardhan Jhingan's opening Speech

Yashvardhan Jhingan welcomed the audience by expressing gratitude and excitement for the event, briefing them on how the TOK Exhibition acts as an opportunity for the students to connect TOK to the real world and allow meaningful and engaging discussion on knowledge and how it manifests around us. The exhibition was then open for the guests to explore what the students presented through their prompts and the choice of objects.

Here are some impressive project presentations by our students:

Polina

Polina chose the knowledge prompt “How important are material tools in the production and acquisition of knowledge?” to explore how objects and technology influence what we know and how we know it. Using an X-ray scanner, a digital camera, and the Stanley Cup as her objects, she reflected on how the different tools can impact our capacity for observation, measurement, and idea sharing and influence or restrict the type of knowledge we can acquire.

Lolita

Lolita’s prompt, "On what grounds might we doubt a claim?" allows us to explore how knowledge is questioned and tested before being accepted. She explored on what basis claims could be doubted. For e.g., insufficient scientific evidence, biased sources, influence of emotions, cultural beliefs, or even commercial interests. With the help of her three objects, including a report on the covid-19 vaccine, Mixue lemon water, and MSG, she explored how the prompt encourages us to consider the reasons behind our doubts regarding the veracity of a claim and think about what constitutes reliable knowledge and when skepticism is required.

Annie

Annie’s prompt, "Can new knowledge change existing values or beliefs?” shows how learning something new can challenge what people have always believed to be true. Through this prompt and her objects—ChatGPT, the HPV vaccine, and a Tesla car—Annie explored the relationship between knowledge and values or beliefs, asking whether new knowledge can change the way individuals or societies think, act, or make decisions. She also explored how even when new information becomes available, some values are still hard to alter. The assignment invites us to consider how information not only informs but also questions and transforms the cultural and moral norms that govern our lives.

The exhibition lasted till 17:30 and was a constant flux of interactions among the IBDP students and their teachers and other guests. The questions and inquiries from the guests provided students the opportunity to explore and reflect even more deeply on how their presentations facilitated the process of understanding the emergence of knowledge and its impact in everyday life. The guests also provided valuable feedback to each student and praised them for their effort and hard work.

While reflecting on her experience, Polina mentioned how the exhibition helped her reflect deeper and gain further clarity on the distinction between ‘production’ and ‘acquisition’ of knowledge and how her objects were better suited for addressing them, allowing her to connect those objects in more creative ways to her prompt.

Lolita found the exhibition a very enriching experience, which allowed her to further deepen her critical analysis and rational logic while analyzing her objects in relation to her prompt. Inputs she received from her teachers during the exhibition allowed her to further connect her topic to other areas of knowledge and optional themes, thus adding new perspectives to her analysis.

Annie too found the exhibition helpful, as it helped her distinguish beliefs and values and critically analyze the extent to which her objects could address the above in connection to her prompt. She concluded how this experience helped her realize that knowledge was interconnected yet contextual, and that understanding the relationship between values, beliefs, and evidence is essential in TOK.

Yashvardhan Jhingan

The closing speech was also delivered by Yashvardhan Jhingan; he congratulated the students for successfully completing the presentation, acknowledging the hard work and persistence they showed. He expressed his gratitude to the guests for being present at the event and proactively engaging with the students, helping them enrich their own knowledge. He finally thanked his colleagues and co-teachers for their relentless support and timely guidance, and the marketing department for their support, closing the ceremony on a joyful note.
