After a wonderful week in Switzerland with 26 students from BSG ranging from Year 8 to Year 12 we wanted to share some of their comments about the trip with you.

  • Most Memorable Moments

From team building activities to snow shoeing on Glacier 3000 to sampling cheese and chocolate in Gruyere, BSG students had some amazing experiences recently. Most notable for many was the 2-day mountain hike with one night in a cabin in the hills. Time spent bonding with friends and even walking with goats have imprinted some fond memories on them all. Joyce commented that she appreciated the simple pleasure of just getting to know some new people better and enjoying card games together. Ruby loved being able to get away from a developed city and enjoy the scenic views ofthe mountains on the treks.

  • Favourite Foods

Whilst the meals were varied and healthy in the chalet, of course most mentioned the opportunity to sample many different types of chocolate at the Chocolate Factory. In addition, William found the ice cream after the 2-day trek a welcome treat. On the trek, Jacob also appreciated the gummy bears that gave him extra energy to keep hiking! Jeremy really enjoyed the Swiss Raclette that the chalet chefs provided on the last night of the trip. But perhaps most often commented was the potato curry, which asstated by Livvy, "was so good" as it was cooked by the students themselves!

  • Favourite Quotes and Funnies

"Almost there" seems to have been an oft repeated phrase! "Cherry the cow" from the Cheese Factory visit became a much loved icon of the trip even managed to make it into songs that were made up to keep weary walkers going. On a light hearted note, one young man survived the teasing of being approached for his social media account by ayoung lady met along the way - needless to say he had no such account to share and any chances of budding romance were dashed immediately.

  • Lessons Learned

Our students had to manage their emotions in a range of situations: team building activities with different people they did not know well initially; mentoring younger students and learning to enjoy their company; and, most of all endurance through some physically challenges on the hikes and glacier. Joyce shared, "After the two-day hike, we saw the mountain that we climbed, I couldn't believe that we had climbed to the top of the mountain and came back!" Maturely, Hayley commented that taking care of herself on the trip was an achievement for her - and indeed being held responsible for their packing and equipment and the order of their rooms was definitely a significant learning curve for many. Managing their money to buy souvenirs was also something one student felt they had improved on.

  • Challenges overcome

Possibly the loveliest comment relating to challenges, in addition to the strenuous physical exertion and sharing a room with many others in the mountain hut, was from Ruby who noted that her biggest challenge was," saying goodbye because it was genuinely one of the most wholesome and inspiring experiences I've probably had!"

  • Final Advice

"We have to work together to succeed", Jeremy.

"Determination can compete with anything", Miika.

"Never forget to bring your towel while washing", Julie.

"Do not believe the teachers' 'nearly there!‘ ", William.
