This year, The British School of Guangzhou celebrates 20 years of learning, growth and community.

Since 2005, we’ve welcomed families from around the world. We’ve built a school where your child can thrive, explore and succeed. Now it’s time to celebrate together.

Join us on Saturday, 15 November from 11am to 3 pm for a day of fun, connection and celebration. We’ll have student performances, interactive activities, food and drinks, and plenty of surprises. It’s a chance to reflect on our journey and enjoy the vibrant spirit of our school.

Whether you’re a current parent, alumni, staff member or friend of the school, we’d love to see you there. Bring your family, meet others and be part of this special moment.

Thank you for being part of our story. Let’s make this celebration one to remember.

It was wonderful to welcome parents to this week’s Stay and Learn event in Pre-nursery and Nursery. Having you observe your children engaged in their daily lessons provided valuable insight into the progress they are making.

This session focused on key early maths skills aligned with our Birth to Five Matters curriculum. Pre-nursery children explored patterns, while nursery children practiced

subitizing, which is the ability to immediately recognize small quantities without counting. These foundational skills support their mathematical understanding and fluency.

Throughout the event, we highlighted how children naturally incorporate maths vocabulary and concepts into their play and interactions. This process plays a vital role in building their English language skills, helping them develop confidence and fluency in using new words and expressions.

Thank you for your active participation and support. We are very proud of the children’s growth and confidence and look forward to continuing this important learning journey together.

Last week, the Year One students had an amazing time on their first school trip to Panyu Farm Park. We certainly have many wonderful young gardeners in Year One! During the visit, the children were able to see how seeds are planted to grow the fruits and vegetables we later find in the supermarket. The experience sparked the curiosity of many of our eager learners, inspiring lots of thoughtful questions.

Planting grape plants and picking sweet potatoes from the rich vegetable patches deepened their understanding of how fruit and vegetables are grown and harvested on a larger scale. We were even lucky enough to bring some sweet potatoes back to school! The children also enjoyed learning how to prepare soy milk using traditional methods and making Chinese herbal sachets using traditional grinding techniques.

To finish the day, we fed locally grown carrots to the adorable rabbit residents of the farm. It was a day filled with smiles, laughter, and wonderful memories that we will cherish!

Inaugural Student Conference: A Plan for Hope

Last week, BSG hosted a three-day student conference, welcoming students from seven Nord Anglia secondary schools across China. With the inspiring theme “A Plan for Hope”, the event brings together young leaders to reflect on their school experiences and envision meaningful change.

On this first day, students began by auditing their own school’s current practices, identifying strengths and areas for growth. Through collaborative workshops, they explored the power of inclusive language and began generating ideas to improve school communities. The day also offered a wonderful opportunity for students to build friendships across campuses, sharing perspectives and learning from one another.

In the spirit of community, our visiting students joined the entire secondary school for House Day, participating in team-building activities and celebrating school spirit. The day will conclude with a BBQ social evening, giving everyone a chance to relax, connect, and gear up for two more days of engaging sessions and collaborative projects.

We’re proud to be part of this inspiring initiative and look forward to seeing the ideas and energy these students bring to the rest of the conference.

A huge thanks goes to our organiser Mrs Cummings and supporting teachers Mr Ajode and Mr Gathala.

Teenage Brain Parent Workshop

Recently parents gathered for a face-to-face workshop focused on the fascinating and sometimes perplexing world of adolescence. The session explored how the teenage brain develops during these formative years and how those changes influence behavior, emotions, and decision-making. Parents gained a deeper understanding of why teens may act impulsively, struggle with emotional regulation, or push boundaries, all through the lens of neuroscience and developmental psychology.

The workshop also offered practical strategies for supporting teenagers with empathy and confidence. From improving communication to setting healthy boundaries, parents left with tools to strengthen their relationships and guide their children through this complex stage of life. It was an engaging and insightful session that reminded us all: behind every teenage mood swing is a brain hard at work growing, adapting, and finding its place in the world.
