At ISA Liwan International High School, an interdisciplinary collaboration activity themed “Metamorphosis” enabled students to unlock new ways of working across disciplines —
Artistic creativity × Biological knowledge × Business thinking — a three-way collaboration that sparked remarkable ideas!
• The Science Group became “butterfly researchers”, exploring the mysteries of metamorphosis and creating delicate specimens;
• The Humanities Group worked as “market analysts”, identifying consumer needs and mapping commercial pathways;
• The Art Group (ISA Liwan International High School Visual Arts Programme) acted as the “visual core” of the project, transforming scientific insights and business logic into designs and exhibitions that can be seen, understood and experienced.
From eye-catching main visual design and immersive exhibition creation to the development of cultural-creative products,
“Metamorphosis” not only captured the shimmering beauty of butterflies, but also marked students’ growth —
a meaningful transformation from individual creation to cross-disciplinary real-world application.
The essence of interdisciplinary learning lies in breaking boundaries and allowing ideas to collide freely. As the creative driving force of the project, the Art Group had a clear mission: transforming the Science Group’s fascinating butterfly facts and the Humanities Group’s market insights into accessible and emotionally engaging aesthetic language.
Drawing inspiration from butterfly specimens, the art students carefully deconstructed the full metamorphosis journey — egg, larva, pupa and adult. The delicate scales on wings, the smooth curves of the chrysalis, and the explosive energy of emerging from the cocoon all became key visual elements. Scientific knowledge, once abstract and distant, now carries both narrative charm and aesthetic appeal.
By incorporating audience preferences gathered by the Humanities Group, students adopted a clean, visually striking design approach that not only aligns with market expectations but also stays firmly rooted in the theme of “Metamorphosis”. In this way, creativity bridges scientific facts and real-world communication, allowing learning to transcend disciplines.
Creative Outcomes:
• Interdisciplinary visual system:
Main visual graphics, wayfinding, promotional posters and a science handbook collaboratively showcase the butterfly’s metamorphosis through evolving colours and forms.
• Specimen packaging and display design:
Innovative formats inspired by butterfly anatomy meet scientific display standards while elevating specimens into art collectables.
• Immersive scenography and cultural-creative products:
Interactive butterfly-themed installations blend science and art, while lifestyle products bring the aesthetics of “Metamorphosis” into everyday life.
This interdisciplinary collaboration allowed students to grow through challenges and discoveries!
Vivian (G10), who led the main backdrop illustration and booklet design, shared:
Rachel (G11), responsible for the main project logo design, cleverly combined the blooming symbolism of BLOOM with the imagery of a butterfly — achieving both aesthetic appeal and conceptual depth.
Through this cross-disciplinary journey, students realised that creativity does not flourish behind closed doors. It blossoms through collaboration — where artistic beauty meets practical purpose, and where emotion is refined by logic.
