中考700分却放弃高考路线，转轨斐特思2个月真实体验

Even before taking the exam, my family and I had already discussed the idea of switching tracks. Learning shouldn't be just about taking exams or getting into a good university. I hope the knowledge I gain can be applied in real life, and I want the freedom to study subjects I'm genuinely interested in.

Before transferring, I interviewed several schools. What impressed me most about Fettes College Guangzhou was that the school doesn't rely solely on grades; instead, it encourages students to build well-rounded abilities, gain practical experience, and aim for universities that best fit their strengths.

After entering FCG, my first challenge was choosing my courses. In the past, all subjects were fixed. Now, I had to choose based on my own interests and plans. I chose seven subjects: Chinese, Mathematics, English, Physics, Business, Economics, and Music. At first, I worried I might fall behind since I had just transferred. But surprisingly, I received A/A* in all subjects in the mid-term exams.

When choosing compulsory subjects, I struggled for a long time between Music and Chemistry. I was afraid that choosing Music would make people think I wasn't serious about academics, and I also worried about not having enough foundation. I ended up asking for advice from the school's dedicated support group. Many people may not know this, but FCG creates a group chat for every student that includes the HOCs, HOSs, HRT, all subject teachers, the UGO, and parents. Whenever I encounter a problem, I always get an immediate response.

The teachers were very patient. They explained the differences between the two subjects and offered advice based on my interests and strengths.

In the end, I finally dared to follow my heart and choose Music.

I also hesitated when deciding whether to take Economics. In this class, I would have to learn macroeconomics alongside students who had already studied it, even though I had no prior experience with economics. I was worried I wouldn't be able to keep up. After learning about my situation, Ms. Chloe, the Economics teacher, consistently encouraged me, and, together with Mr. Peter, used CCA time to give me extra lessons in microeconomics. Their support really encouraged me.

Outside of class, I teamed up with classmates to participate in the ASDAN Business Simulation Challenge. Our team won second place and a Silver Award. It felt great to apply what I had learned in Business and Economics to a real project. At FCG, I can design my own daily timetable and join competitions with students from different year groups. This sense of "freedom" is something I truly enjoy. Once my academic schedule is settled, I plan to try equestrian lessons next semester.

For anyone switching to an international school, English is one of the biggest hurdles.

When I first started, there were many academic terms I couldn't understand. But instead of translating directly, teachers would explain them in simpler, more conversational English, guiding me to understand the meaning myself.

At the same time, I practised listening and writing in ESL classes and gradually adapted to the bilingual learning environment. I also studied Japanese, Spanish, and Russian in my spare time, and since we have classmates from Russia, I occasionally talk with them to practice speaking.

FCG offers weekly IELTS classes and extra CCA sessions every afternoon. Ms. Eva helped me build a solid foundation, and the IELTS teacher also used evening study time to go over key points and do practice papers with me. In just two months, my IELTS speaking score improved by one band.

The new learning style also took time to get used to. In my previous school, lessons were mostly lecture-based—teachers talked, and we took notes and practised. But classes at FCG are very different, with a strong focus on group discussions and independent thinking. For example, in Chinese, we analyse text structure and create mind maps in group work.

At first, I was not used to speaking up during discussions. Mr. Tim, my Mathematics teacher, noticed this and began explaining mathematical concepts through stories. He also asked us to read interesting books, such as Mathematics Girls, and to share our reflections. Gradually, I realised that Mathematics could actually be enjoyable, and I started feeling more comfortable expressing my ideas in class.

During these two months, I've had moments of anxiety and confusion, but the school has given me a strong sense of security. Whenever I feel troubled, I can always talk to a teacher—whether it's the boarding staff, my HRT, or a subject teacher—who listens patiently and offers support.

Before the mid-term exams, I struggled with stress and had trouble sleeping. My HRT, Mr. Francis, noticed it immediately. He came over to ask if something was bothering me and reassured me, saying, "It's just one exam. Your health matters the most." His words really warmed my heart and helped me relax.

Now, I have successfully been elected as the High School Student Council Secretary. I hope to contribute in my own way and help make the school even better.
