The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a public research university located in Clear Water Bay, Sai Kung, New Territories, Hong Kong. HKUST is one of the top universities in Hong Kong, currently ranked among the "Top 100 Universities in the World" by QS World University Rankings, "Top 100 Universities in the World" by Times Higher Education, and "Top 100 Universities in the World" by U.S. News & World Report.
Founded in 1991, HKUST is the third institution in Hong Kong to be granted a university title. HKUST has two campuses in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The Hong Kong campus, located in Clear Water Bay, covers an area of approximately 60.7 hectares (910 mu). The Guangzhou campus, spanning 113 hectares (1,695 mu), officially commenced operations in September 2023. According to the latest official data, the university has a total student enrollment of around 17,189, with over 835 full-time faculty and teaching staff hailing from more than 40 countries. It also houses 52 research centers, providing solid support for teaching and research endeavors.
HKUST has achieved outstanding results in various international rankings. It ranked 44th in the QS World University Rankings 2026, 6th in the QS Asian University Rankings 2026 (2nd in Hong Kong). In the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2025, it retained its position as 19th globally and 1st in Hong Kong, and its graduate employability ranks 1st in Hong Kong and 3rd in Greater China. In 2025, the university was awarded the “Research Exploration Award” at the QS Asia Pacific Higher Education Summit, underscoring its international recognition for research quality and academic influence.
