小学五年是语言学习的黄金期,斐特思小学部如何帮孩子夯实英语基础、提升学习兴趣、实现流利表达?

The five years of primary school represent a golden opportunity for language development. So, how does FCG support students in building a strong foundation, fostering enthusiasm, and achieving fluency in English? The following four key questions offer an insightful overview of our English teaching approach in the Primary School.

新入学学生,如何跟上课程进度?

How do new students keep up with the curriculum?


分层走班教学

Tiered Instruction and Flexible Grouping


新入学学生需参加入学测试,测试结果将作为后续分层教学的重要参考依据;

所有学生每年还需重新参加基底测试,学校会依据最新测试成绩调整分层。

All new students complete an admission test, which helps us with their placement. 


Additionally, each year, all students undertake a baseline assessment, allowing us to adjust placements based on their most recent results.


一年级仅在年级内分为启航组、探索组两个层级,不实行走班制;


二年级及以上推行 “走班制 + 分层教学”,按测评结果将学生分为三个层级,不同水平的学生到对应班级上课,分层更精准。


因此,在不同层级的课堂上,老师会根据各小组学生的学习进度,准备难度适配的阅读材料 —— 从单词难易到材料篇幅,均为学生量身打造。

In Grade 1, students are organised into two groups—Suns and Mercury—within the same classroom. 


From Grade 2 onwards, we adopt a "tiered instruction and flexible grouping" model. Students are placed into three tiers based on their assessment results, and teachers prepare differentiated reading materials tailored to each tier, adjusting both difficulty and length to suit individual needs.



动态评估调整层级

Continuous Assessment and Tier Adjustment


采用 “每月微调 + 基石阶段评估” 机制,以 “进步幅度”“知识掌握稳定性”“学习兴趣” 为核心指标,而非依赖单次测评成绩。


通过剑桥英语内部测评、PM Benchmark 阅读测评、Schonell Spelling 单词测评、内部月度测评、IXL 月度评估及日常课堂观察等方式动态追踪,长期反馈并定期重新评估调整层级。


这套高密度的测评体系,能确保每位学生的学习进度都被关注,让他们始终在最适合自己的层级中高效学习。

Placements are reviewed through a "monthly fine-tuning and milestone assessment" process, focusing on indicators such as progress, mastery of content, and interest in learning, rather than relying on a single test. 


Our assessments include Cambridge young learner exams, PM Benchmark reading assessments, Schonnel Spelling tests, monthly school-based tests, IXL diagnostics, and daily classroom observations.


This frequent evaluation system ensures that each student’s learning journey is closely monitored and that they remain in the most suitable tier.



额外支持基础薄弱学生

Additional Support for Students with Weaker Foundations


课堂座位采用 “同伴互助” 式编排,助力英文学习:当基础薄弱的学生听不懂英文指令时,教师会引导他们向同组基础较强的同桌请教,由同桌用贴合其理解水平的语言解释指令。学校还为这类学生开设了每日额外学术辅导课程。

Classroom seating is arranged to promote "peer support." When students have difficulty understanding English instructions, teachers encourage them to ask their partner for assistance, who can explain the instructions in a way that is more accessible. The school also offers daily academic support lessons for students needing extra help.

Curriculum Framework

课程体系

小学部将中国国家课程、国际文凭组织小学项目课程和英国费得斯公学课程融为一体,形成了以国家课程为基础,国际文凭组织小学课程为框架,英国费得斯公学课程元素为特色的课程体系。聚焦跨学科教学、概念驱动与探究式学习,兼顾基础夯实与国际视野培养。

The Primary School combines the Chinese National Curriculum, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, and elements of the Fettes College curriculum. Our programme is grounded in the national curriculum, framed by the IB PYP, and enriched by Fettes traditions. It emphasises interdisciplinary learning, concept-driven teaching, and inquiry-based approaches, ensuring a solid foundation alongside an international perspective.

Bilingual Teaching with Chinese and 

International Teachers

中外双语课堂

小学部课程的全英或双语授课占比近 70%。中外教分工明确、协同授课。外教主导课堂,针对不同层级学生的口语、听力水平设计差异化互动任务,并搭配引导性阅读与写作训练,强化语言输入与输出。中教聚焦语法与应试技巧的分层指导,同时牵头筹备各项大型英语能力竞赛。


课堂注重培养学生的英语应用能力,提供大量开口表达机会,帮助他们建立用英文解决问题的思维。除鼓励 “开口表达” 外,课堂还结合游戏、项目式学习(PBL)、戏剧表演等趣味形式,通过 “以说带写(Talk for writing)” 等任务激发学生的学习兴趣。

Around 70% of our lessons are delivered in English or in a bilingual format. International teachers lead the instruction, designing tiered tasks for speaking and listening, supported by guided reading and writing. Meanwhile, Chinese teachers focus on grammar, exam techniques, and competition preparation.


Our classrooms provide extensive opportunities for oral expression and problem-solving in English. Lessons also incorporate games, project-based learning, drama, and "Talk for Writing" activities to foster interest and build confidence.

Immersive English Environment

打造浸润式英文环境

校园标识全英文覆盖,各班均设置英文阅读角。英文书籍、词典及线上学习平台等资源多维渗透,同时打造常态化英文实践场景:每周一集会设英文分享环节,每位学生都有机会上台分享当月主题。定期开展英语日、哈利波特日、TEDx 等主题全英文互动活动,让英语融入日常生活;推动跨学科英文元素融入,例如数学、探究、体育等学科均渗透一定比例的英语教学内容。


英语不再是单纯的学习 “目的”,而是成为学生探索知识的工具、认识世界的视角与思维方式。

The school features English signage throughout the campus, reading corners in every classroom, and access to English books, dictionaries, and online resources. Weekly assemblies include English sharing sessions, giving every student the opportunity to present. Regular events—such as English Corner, Harry Potter Day, and TEDx—create authentic scenarios for using English. Additionally, English is integrated into other subjects, including Maths, Inquiry, and PE, allowing it to become not just a subject but also a vital tool for learning and exploring the world.

图书馆海量英文原版书籍

Extensive English Library Resources


图书馆全馆藏书达 2 万余本,涵盖科普、小说、人文社科、艺术等多个类别,其中包含大量英文原版书籍。


老师会根据英文书籍的阅读难度对其分级,并用鲜明的颜色标签区分。学生可通过 MyOn 英文分级阅读系统生成个性化书单,快速找到匹配自身阅读水平的书籍,在阅读乐趣中稳步 “晋级”。

Our library boasts over 20,000 books across a range of subjects including science, fiction, humanities, and the arts, featuring a substantial collection of English originals. 


The books are leveled and colour-coded by difficulty, making it easier for students to choose appropriate reading materials. Additionally, students can use the MyOn graded reading system to generate personalised booklists, allowing them to make steady progress while enjoying their reading.

 What enrichment opportunities are offered for high-achieving students?


针对英文水平突出的学生,学校规划了多元化深度拓展路径,通过特色活动满足其进阶学习需求:


一是搭建竞赛成长平台:组织英文竞赛专项集训,鼓励学生参与小学英文演讲比赛,以赛促学,提升其语言应用与表达能力。


小学部学子曾斩获 2023 年外文素养青少年演讲与辩论大赛全国第二名(银奖)、2025 年未来外交官英语演讲比赛全国金奖、银奖等荣誉。

Competition Training


Students receive specialised coaching for English competitions and are encouraged to participate in public speaking events. Notable achievements include:
