At ISA Liwan, Tin is a student who defies simple definition. Under the spotlight, he is the lead singer of a band; at the City of the Future competition, he is a logically rigorous ‘Chief Engineer’; and in the heat of a debate, he transforms into a sharp third speaker. Yet, his favourite label is the ‘Sunfish’—the name of his STEAM band. “Sunfish have thick skin and are remarkably resilient. Even when facing external challenges, they continue to swim forward with unwavering determination.”

From ‘System Execution’ to
Rediscovering the Soul.
Reflecting on his academic journey before joining ISA Liwan, Tin uses a high-tech metaphor to describe his former self: a ‘robot’. “Learning used to feel like running a pre-set programme: no movement without an instruction.” The turning point came in Year 6 when he joined ISA Liwan. The classrooms here helped him realise that the school does not seek perfect ‘replicas’, but rather authentic ‘communicators’.
His Chinese teacher, Ms Nora, recalls this vividly. Upon arrival, many children are accustomed to writing well-structured but hollow essays. Tin, however, was different, vividly depicting his authentic observations and feelings. “He rarely follows the crowd; he holds firm to his own convictions.” This nurturing of ‘authenticity’ allowed Tin to understand that at ISA Liwan, learning is not about finding standard answers, but about constructing one’s own intellectual framework.

Growing into Greatness,
Once the Canopy Clears
If the classroom awakened his soul, then STEAM competitions became the training ground for rebuilding his confidence. Before a crucial competition, a key teammate had to withdraw. As the sole senior member, Tin was compelled to step out from behind the scenes. Ms Lilly, the STEAM coordinator, witnessed this remarkable transformation: “When the overshadowing tree was moved aside, he began to flourish on his own.”
During the presentation for the ‘Moonlight City’ project, Tin displayed incredible ‘ice-breaking’ skills. Rather than mechanically reciting technical parameters, he used humour to explain the project’s inspiration. This flash of wit ensured the judges remembered the team, ultimately leading them to win the First Prize in the regional competition. From that moment on, Tin was no longer a student hiding in the shadows, but a leader capable of commanding the room with logic and charisma.

Permission to Create a ‘Rough Draft’ First.
Tin’s metamorphosis is deeply rooted in ISA Liwan’s culture of ‘embracing trial and error’. His STEAM coach once told him: “To make something great, you must first be willing to make something rubbish.” This precisely shattered his fear of perfectionism.
Such support is evident across campus life: teachers guide him in bridging the gap between ‘grand ideas’ and ‘practical implementation’. In the debating society, winning or losing is not the final verdict but the starting point for reflection. This sense of security has enabled Tin to evolve into the rational and sophisticated debater he is today.

Permission to Create a ‘Rough Draft’ First.
During a debating competition in 2025, Tin’s team was unfortunately eliminated. Despite his disappointment, he made a moving gesture: without hesitation, he selflessly shared his team’s carefully prepared ‘final round scripts’ with the teammates who had progressed. Ms Nora remarked, “In that moment, what he displayed was no longer a personal desire for victory, but true spirit of collaboration.”
Self and the Future

Permission to Create a ‘Rough Draft’ First.
Today, Tin possesses a profound sense of ‘Student Agency’—the drive to take initiative rather than waiting for instructions. At the end of the interview, he shared a motto for his peers: “Setbacks are accidental; passion is the constant.” In the vast ocean of ISA Liwan, we hope every child can develop the resilience to swim bravely towards their own passions.
