Year 5 blasted off into our brand-new Space unit with an unforgettable “hook” lesson, as students officially joined the Academy and began ACTS – Astronaut Cadet Training Squad! With big smiles, brilliant energy, and plenty of imagination, our students stepped straight into training mode.
Students rotated through three high-energy mission stations designed to build teamwork, curiosity, and problem-solving:
Mission 1: Astronaut Obstacle Training
Helmets on, minds in space! Students tackled an astronaut-style obstacle course, pretending they were navigating the challenges of space travel—balancing, climbing, crawling, and completing tasks like true space explorers.

Mission 2: Engineering Lab – Paper Plane Challenge
Next, it was time for engineering. Students planned, designed and tested their paper aeroplanes before launching them in a friendly competition to see whose plane could travel the furthest. There were cheers, dramatic take-offs, and some surprise “record breakers”!

Mission 3: Kahoot! Space Quiz
Finally, students put their space knowledge to the test with a fast-paced Kahoot! quiz, revealing what they already know (and what they can’t wait to learn). The excitement was sky-high and the discussions were out of this world!

Space is always a Year 5 favourite, and this hands-on start has launched us into the unit with huge enthusiasm. We can’t wait to explore more and prepare for bigger missions ahead.
Watch this space!
