社会学

本学期开始,选择了【人文社会】学科的学生们将会非常忙碌,因为本学期的【人文社会】学科将会有很多具有挑战性的任务。到目前为止,我们的主要重点是社会学研究的基础,比较和对比实证主义和解释主义方法在社会学中的各种主题。


为了将这一点付诸实践,学生们已经在各自的研究项目上进行了配对。首先他们创建了简短的调查,以便了解更多关于自己选择的主题的信息。这些小型研究项目将扩展到我们目前的单元,让学生们以实用和发人深省的方式探索各种研究方法。



作为一门课,我们也开始研究论文的写作,从“burger analogy”开始学习。这是学生在整个学校生涯中必须掌握的一项重要技能。

The beginning of this term has been busy for our sociology students. We have hit the ground running and started with some challenging tasks for everyone to tackle. Our primary focus so far has been the foundations of sociological research, comparing and contrasting between positivist and interpretivist approaches various topics within sociology. 


To put this into action, students have been working in pairs on their own research projects, first creating short surveys in order to find out more about various topics chosen by themselves. These mini-research projects will be expanded upon throughout our current unit, allowing students to explore various research methods in a practical and thought-provoking way.



As a class, we have also begun looking at essay writing, starting the with ‘burger analogy’. This helps students to visualise the parts of a paragraph necessary to create an effective piece of argumentative writing. This is an important skill for students to carry with them throughout their school careers.


MATHEMATICS #

9年级:

本学期的【数学】学科进入了几何部分的学习,同学们对几何图形还是非常感兴趣,同学们首先需要认识掌握相应的几何英文词汇,我们有可以触摸的模型,有视频,同时有Myimath相应的课堂作业练习。Smile老师在课堂教学中,通过创设问题情景,引领学生思考,善于结合教学内容,捕捉“数学模型”,增加学生们对【数学】学科的求知欲。



10年级:

重点关注准备今年5月份的IGCSE考试。目前带领小伙伴们熟悉考试题型,进行练习巩固,然后总结知识点进行查缺补漏!以学生为中心,充分了解学生,根据学生的特点发挥学生的积极性,培养学生主动学习能力,让学生在愉快、轻松的气氛中探索学习!

G9:

The geometry part has already been started this semester, and the students are still very interested in geometric figures. First of all, the students need to know and master the corresponding geometric English vocabulary. We have models that can be touched, videos, and corresponding classwork exercises of Myimath. In classroom teaching, teacher Smile leads students to think by creating problem scenarios, and is good at combining teaching content, capturing "mathematical models", and stimulating students' curiosity.



G10:

Focus on preparing for the IGCSE exam in May this year. At present, leaded our students to familiarize themselves with the test questions, practice and consolidate, and then summarize the knowledge points to check and fill in the gaps! Teacher Smile takes the students as the center in the classroom, fully understands the students, exerts the enthusiasm of the students according to the characteristics of the students, cultivates the students' active learning ability, and allows the students to explore and study in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere!

# CHEMISTRY#

在开学这两周的化学学习中,G9 的学生一直为探索不同的化学反应做准备。在课堂上,他们一直在积累相关的基础知识,其中包括了不同化合物的化学式和名称,不同类型的反应方程式的写法,以及如何平衡化学反应。


为了促进同学们课内外的高效学习,从本学期起,所有课上所使用到的课件都会打印成讲义,分发给每位学生。这会使得课前预习、课中记笔记和课后复习对他们来说更加容易。






除此之外,为了让学生更积极更深刻,学生们代表自己的学院参加了一场知识竞赛。在竞赛中,他们需要和组员讨论和解决化学配平的相关问题,并互相帮助让每一位组员都能了解整个解题过程。他们对此感到非常兴奋,并积极为自己的学院赢得积分。最后,他们为Rosalind 学院赢了 1 分,Greyson学院赢了 2 分。对于G10的学生来说,他们这两周一直在学习最后一章节的有机化学。这是整个IGCSE化学课程中最具挑战性的一章,因为里面含有更广泛的专业词汇、物质结构和反应。但是,很高兴看到他们都有在努力记笔记并慢慢消化这些内容。

During these two weeks, students in G9 have been preparing to explore different chemical reactions. They have been accumulating fundamental knowledge, including formulae and names of different compounds, different types of equations for reactions,  and also how to balance the reactions. 


In order to facilitate efficient learning in and after class, all slides used are printed out as handouts and given to each student from this term on, making pre-reading before class, notes talking during class and revision afterwards easier. 






On Wednesday, students participated in a knowledge competition representing their houses, in which they need to discuss and solve questions with their housemates and help each other to understand what happens in each step. They were very excited about this, and tried hard to win points for their own house. It turns out the Rosalind House won 1 point and Greyson won 2 points. In terms of G10 students, they have been learning the last chapter about organic chemistry, which is one of the most challenging one in the whole IGCSE chemistry course, with a wider range of specialised vocabulary, structures and reactions. However, it is pleased to see they are trying hard to take notes and digest gradually.


PHYSICS #

物理

这周的【物理】学科课堂迎来了新的一个主题学习:磁学。磁场在我的生活中无处不在,地球就是一个大的磁场,他看不见摸不着,但是如果是磁性材料就会感受它的磁力,所以课堂上需要用特殊的手段让磁场被看见,在物理学中我们用磁场线来描述磁场的方向大小,但是它是假象出来的线。


为了让同学们能够真实的了解它,我们用铁屑粉末,和指南针来使磁场线可视化。此外学生了解什么是磁性材料,为什么是磁性材料,这是和元素的化学结构息息相关。最后学习磁性材料的分类,现阶段学习分成了软磁体和硬磁体两大类,他们的具体用途我们也加以讨论。



作为拓展可以让学生了解一下磁性材料的应用,加深对这个知识点的理解,Peggy老师也推荐学生购买一些相应的磁流体玩具,了解它的作用原理。还有爱美人士喜欢的面膜,也有磁性流体做成的,让学生们课后讨论为什么磁性面膜可以去污?另外还有家用洗碗液也有含有磁性材料的,为什么可以强力去油?这些都是学生们非常感兴趣的话题。另外周末在家让学生动手一下,想想还有什么样的方法让磁场线可视化,可以做出来带到学校和小伙伴们分享。

This week, the G10 physics ushered in a new theme: magnetism. Magnetic field is everywhere in our life, the earth is a huge magnetic field, which cannot be seen and touch, unless it is a magnetic material will feel the magnetic force. So in the classroom we need to use special way to make the magnetic field be seen. In physics, they use magnetic field lines to describe the direction of the magnetic field, but these lines are the imaginary lines. 


In order to let the students can really understand it, we use iron powder, and compass to visualize the magnetic field lines, as the picture shown. In addition, students understand what is magnetic material and why it is a magnetic material, which is closely related to the chemical structure of the elements. Finally, the classification of magnetic materials is learned, and at this stage,it is divided into two categories: soft magnets and hard magnets, and their specific uses are also discussed. 



As an extension, we let students discover many applications of magnetic materials, for example, there are some corresponding magnetic fluid toys on the network can be purchased, what is its mechanism of toys? There are also all kinds of masks in cosmetics, one kind is also made of magnetic fluids, so let the students discuss why these magnetic masks can be used to decontaminate. In addition, there are also household dishwashing liquids that contain magnetic materials, why can they  strongly degrease? These are topics of great interest to the students. In addition, at home on weekends, let students make some device, which can also visualize the magnetic field line, it is encouraged to bring the device to school and share it with friends.


# BIOLOGY#

本学期,【生物】学科将会给同学们待来全新且令人兴奋的生物课题,同时我们也一直在稳步推进IGCSE课程内容。


我们九年级的生物课目前正处于植物营养单元的学习中,学生们正在学习植物解剖学和光合作用。在过去的两个星期里,学生们参加了三个不同的实验室:1)植物解剖学观察。2)植物细胞的显微镜分析。3)从叶片中提取叶绿素和淀粉。学生们都很高兴并参与其中,积极学习植物世界的奥妙。 


Biology


10年级的学生则在学习细胞呼吸和气体交换。学生们花了一些时间建立了一个解剖学上准确且功能齐全的呼吸系统模型,这有助于他们了解帮助人类呼吸的机械过程。学生们还在为一个分配给他们的课题制作海报,下周他们将进行课堂演讲。我们对即将到来的更复杂的单元感到兴奋,并继续通过实践活动和实验室来学习。

The second term has brough new and exciting biology topics for both Grade 9 and Grade 10, as we keep steadily advancing through the IGCSE curriculum content.  


Our Grade 9 biology class is currently in the middle of the Plant Nutrition Unit, in which students are learning about plant anatomy and photosynthesis. Over the past two weeks, students have participated in three different laboratories: 1) Plant Anatomy Observation. 2) Microscopic Analysis of plant cells. 3) Extraction of Chlorophyll and Starch from a leaf. Students have been happy and engaged, actively learning about the wonders of the plant world.    


Biology


Grade 10 students on the hand, are learning about Cell Respiration and Gas Exchange. Students have spent some time building an anatomically accurate and fully functional model of the respiratory system, that has helped them understand the mechanical process that helps human breathe. Students are also working on a poster for a topic that has been assigned to them, and they will have class presentations next week. We are excited about the more complex upcoming units, and to continue learning through hands-on activities and laboratories.
