Comprehensive Language Support
Hiba Academy Hangzhou School has established a distinctive tiered English support system. At the primary level, our ESL (English as a Second Language) programme delivers multi-dimensional support through specialised Chinese teachers. This integrated approach combines embedded classroom assistance to ensure subject mastery with targeted small-group tutorials addressing language barriers. Our teaching research team employs diversified assessment tools to craft personalised learning plans, enabling seamless collaboration between Chinese and international faculty.
The senior school innovatively implements a three-wave EAL (English as an Additional Language) support model:
Wave One establishes an inclusive linguistic environment through differentiated instruction across all subjects.
Wave Two involves customised intervention plans developed by English specialists, featuring dynamic adjustments based on ongoing assessments.
Wave Three delivers intensive support, focusing on core literacy skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) at KS3 and IGCSE exam strategies at KS4. These three tiers operate synergistically to form a comprehensive language ecosystem.
We firmly believe that quality language education transcends skill acquisition. Through our three-dimensional approach - cross-disciplinary collaboration, personalised mentoring, and the immersive bilingual environment - Hiba Academy Hangzhou empowers every pupil to overcome linguistic barriers, thrive confidently in dual-language contexts, and ultimately unleash their unique potential.
Recognising the hard work and commitment we have put into prioritising mental health, we are proud to announce that Wellington College Hangzhou has been awarded the Silver standard for the Carnegie Centre of Excellence Mental Health in Schools “Further Education Mental Health Award”, the first award of its kind in any school in China. By embracing this award, Wellington College Hangzhou is demonstrating a commitment to working towards excellent practice by prioritising mental health and wellbeing, thereby establishing a whole school culture where all members of a school community thrive and improve pupil outcomes.
In 2006, Wellington College introduced wellbeing as a compulsory subject alongside English, the sciences and maths as part of the core curriculum. In doing so, Wellington College became the first school in the UK to introduce wellbeing lessons for pupils and became a pioneer of positive education. As a member of the Wellington College family of schools, Hiba Academy Hangzhou has upheld this tradition and established a comprehensive wellbeing programme where we adopt an approach that values young people's happiness to the same extent as their academic success.
We follow the PEEC course (Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum) in our wellbeing lessons. It is an explicit curriculum designed for schools that stems from the research of Martin Seligman on the PERMA model of flourishing.
In keeping with Hiba's commitment to a holistic education, Hiba Academy Hangzhou is situated on a purpose built, state-of-the-art campus containing all of the facilities required to provide pupils with access to the very best academic and co-curricular opportunities. The appearance and design of the building is inspired by the distinctive architecture at Wellington College in England.
Wellington College has a deep tradition of boarding; it is an extension of our educational model and central to becoming a Wellingtonian. In China, there is also a long tradition of boarding provision, which extends back to the time of Confucius. At Hiba Academy Hangzhou we seek to bring together the very best boarding practices to create an environment in which our pupils thrive. Our pupils will enjoy a rich and varied programme in a safe and supportive environment that serves as a family away from home.
Boarding is led by our expatriate and local Boarding Mistresses, who hold senior positions within the College. Pupils will have access to personal and social development activities supported by the boarding mentors and housemasters, along with opportunities to enhance their studies after school and exploration of sports and the arts. A rich and structured programme will inspire, support and challenge pupils. They will be encouraged to develop socially, academically, spiritually and morally as they foster a culture of independence.
