2025 Graduate Story | Alina: Be you. Be Free.
If we were to identify one keyword from this interview, it would be vision.
A vision for the ideal academic course, a vision for her future university life and a vision for an ideal society and policy.
Alina's chosen course is Politics and Economics. In our brief conversation, certain words stood out: social contribution, thinking and expression, and warmth.
Excelling in Politics and Economics demands not just extensive knowledge but also the ability to identify issues with empathy, qualities Alina clearly possesses.
During the 2024-2025 application season, Alina earned admission to four prestigious universities, a testament to her academic excellence and well-rounded profile. These include the University of Southampton and the University of Bristol in the UK, as well as the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne in Australia.
Each acceptance letter is a meticulously crafted key, unlocking doors to diverse global experiences. The University of Southampton is renowned for political science research, the University of Bristol is distinguished in economics, the University of Sydney is located in one of the Southern Hemisphere's most dynamic cities and the University of Melbourne is celebrated for its inclusive academic culture.
Now, Alina is thoughtfully evaluating these options by weighing academic strengths, career opportunities and cultural adaptation to choose the path that best aligns with her vision.

Politics and Economics:
The Aspiration of a Global Citizen
Alina's university application journey began with the awakening of her policy awareness.
Her interest in politics and economics was first sparked during an economics class debate during her Sixth Form years on The Social Impact of Minimum Wage Policies. It was then that she realised to her surprise, that economic policies were far more than theoretical concepts; they were invisible forces shaping real lives, influencing everything from employment rates to cost of living, from resource distribution to social welfare systems.
This realisation sparked her curiosity. She started to read Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations and Keynes's The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, while tracking contemporary developments from Fed monetary policies to EU trade agreements. Through this exploration, she came to understand how politics and economics intertwine to define global dynamics.
Guided by her teachers at Wellington College Hangzhou, Alina engaged in many relevant activities and policy discussions as a representative. These experiences cemented her belief that political economy was not just an academic interest but her future calling.
In her application essays, Alina addressed complex policy issues through engaging narratives. Her writing revealed an original thinker whose intellectual depth emerged through vivid description. The counsellors at Wellington College Hangzhou preserved this distinctive voice during edits, resisting formulaic language to maintain the essay's authentic rhythm while ensuring both academic rigour and emotional resonance.
Amid her dynamic school life, Alina's visit to a charity organisation proved most memorable. She and her schoolmates went to a local children's welfare organisation supported by the school's fundraising and worked with the staff to plan outreach programmes. She observed how grassroots policies directly impact vulnerable groups, such as how an education subsidy could change a child's future and how vocational training might break generational poverty cycles.
Alina's growth stems from examining policies, broadening perspectives and relentlessly internalising insights into her own understanding of the field. This experience made her realise that policymaking is about constructing macroeconomic frameworks while considering micro-level human empathy. It sparked her inquiry: How can economic tools optimise social welfare and political action advance equity? These questions are now the driving force for her academic exploration.

School Activities:
Where Every Endeavour Builds Meaning
When Alina first stepped into Wellington College Hangzhou as a Year 10 pupil in 2021, she was excited but also nervous. She could hardly have imagined how profoundly this school would shape her growth. During her tenure as student council president, she led initiatives like charity sales and international cultural festivals, mediated differing opinions and handled unexpected situations. These leadership practices forged her abilities in collaborative leadership, effective communication and crisis management.
For Alina, these experiences were never about padding her resume. She was passionate about building her club to flourish.
Among Wellington's rich school activities, music remained Alina's true passion. Working with a world-class conductor for orchestra rehearsals at Wellington College Hangzhou, she played the violin as a unique way to relieve her academic and extracurricular pressures. From stage performance at Summer Carnival to solo recitals in concert halls and even public engagements at municipal venues, each stage appearance sharpened her skills while teaching her the importance of perseverance and dedication.
Additionally, the world-class sports facilities at Wellington College Hangzhou opened new horizons for Alina. As a member of both the swimming and basketball teams, she developed physical strength and mastered the core principles of teamwork and perseverance through competitive events.
"Sports mirror academics, both demand clear goals, strategies and perseverance."
Those who can coordinate cross-disciplinary projects and manage time properly usually demonstrate analytical composure and rigorous self-regulation, but Alina has expanded these qualities into new dimensions.
She possesses profound empathy toward others and herself, which influences every dimension of her life.
Looking back on her time at Wellington College Hangzhou, the most rewarding experience for Alina has been seeing all the hard work pay off. From late-night study sessions to early-morning swimming and violin training, every effort has accumulated into her present triumphs. Standing at the threshold of graduation, she is filled with a sense of pride and achievement.
Throughout our conversation, Alina continually mentioned how Wellington College Hangzhou provided more than academic growth but also a sense of reassurance. Even now, with exams completed and coursework finished, her teachers are still there to answer her every query and celebrate life's milestones alongside her. She speaks with particular gratitude about the staff who guided her transition to the school, whose constant encouragement through challenges empowered her to embrace new journeys with courage.
To her younger peers, her message is:
“Your journey is just beginning, and it's going to be an amazing one. Yes, there will be challenges along the way. There will be times when you feel overwhelmed with assignments or stressed about exams. But remember, it's all part of the process. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, whether it's taking on a leadership role, joining a new club, or trying a different subject. Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. And most importantly, don't forget to enjoy the journey. The friends you make, the experiences you have and the knowledge you gain will stay with you for a lifetime.”
Work hard, stay true to yourself, and embrace every moment.
This is Alina's graduation message and her conviction in her future path. As she sets sail from Wellington College Hangzhou, she will shine on the global stage, where knowledge and passion will script her next extraordinary chapter.
To Alina from her music teacher
Dear Alina,
I wanted to take a moment to express how much your presence has meant to me throughout our time together. Even though you didn't choose Music as an official subject for your A levels, our conversations and shared moments about music have been a special part of my teaching journey. I've truly appreciated the times you shared your favourite pieces with me during self-study periods – those are memories I will always hold dear.
Beyond being a dedicated pupil, you have become a much-valued friend. Your openness, your stories, and the laughter we've shared have enriched my experience as a teacher. The orchestra will certainly feel different without you, and I will miss your wonderful spirit very much.
Alina, I sincerely hope you will continue to pursue music, whether through singing or playing, because I believe your talent and passion are something truly special. Never stop creating, performing, or sharing your love for music; it's a gift that can bring joy to many others, as it has to me.
I am confident that your hard work and determination will lead you to succeed in whatever you choose to do. I wish you all the best for the future—keep striving, keep dreaming, and keep that beautiful music alive.
