In Schiller's A Brief History of Aesthetic Education, he says: "There is education for health, education for cognition, education for morality, and education for aesthetic ability and beauty. The aim of that last kind of education is to cultivate the fullest possible harmony of our whole sensual and rational powers."

#01

Towards beauty, educating people through beauty

What is aesthetic education?

Aesthetic education is also known as education for the sense of beauty. Aesthetic education encompasses not only education in aesthetics, sentimentality and spirituality, but also education that enriches the imagination and develops a sense of creativity.

Aesthetic education is the education of 'another kind of thinking'. It is not only about developing aesthetic taste, learning to think artistically and acquiring creative skills, but also about developing students' sensitivity to beauty.

The definition of beauty is completely different for different people. Painters feel the delicacy of brushstrokes and landscapes in their paintings, while poets say that every fallen leaf is a tribute to autumn. Throughout history, those who can appreciate beauty have often been excellent creators, leaving their own landscapes for the world. For good education, therefore, more attention should be paid to teaching students how to feel beauty, create it and discover better ways to teach it.

The essence of aesthetic education is not just about the amount of work that is created, but also about students learning to express their feelings and ideas with their own unique thoughts, and to show the beauty in their own eyes. Opening up the senses and allowing the heart to express itself freely and easily, so that children can find this feeling in art, is the greatest meaning of aesthetic education.

#02

Art education is the way to realise aesthetic education

Aesthetic education is a sensual perception, an education that strikes at the heart and speaks to the spirit, an education that has no standards but certainly has results, an education that is dedicated to promoting students' creativity by breaking down the boundaries and barriers of subject categories and knowledge structures.

Arts education is an important part of aesthetic education, the core of which lies in insisting on nurturing people with beauty, beautifying them, moistening their hearts and nurturing their minds with beauty, guiding students to perceive, experience and understand the arts in a healthy aesthetic practice.

The importance of art education is illustrated by the United States and the United Kingdom, where art education is written into law, by France, where every child is required to receive a complete art education during the compulsory education period from kindergarten to high school, and by China's new-age view of education, which requires the all-round development of the moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic aspects.

In art education, art is only a method of achieving a goal, not a goal. Art education is about the creation of creative, physically and mentally healthy people. Architectural design, visual arts, handicrafts, media arts, music, literary arts, circus arts, dance and drama are used as vehicles for arts education to further develop students' interests and hobbies in the arts through the study of specific projects.

When students are imbued with the arts, they have the ability to perceive the world, to think independently and to be happy. The effects of the arts are not always immediate, but they become increasingly important in the development of a person's life.

To feel, to explore, to create

Aesthetic education is like a light, a bright sunrise. The JPED Art Curriculum guides students through art learning, art thinking, art experiencing and art creating in accordance with the core art curriculum requirements combined with art project expertise.

Core Standards for the Arts Curriculum

In order to better guide students in their exploration of the arts, they will learn to express themselves and be creative in their art. Mr. Jairo, a teacher in the JPED Art Programme, uses painting as a form of artistic expression as an entry point, leading students to draw their own definitions of beauty through artistic creation.

Jairo Benitez Torres, coordinator of the JPED Art Programme holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis. Fluent in English and Spanish, he has worked as an art teacher in several countries. He has extensive experience in art education, a creative educator and lifelong learner with a passion for education, helping students discover themselves, set goals and accomplish self-improvement. he has a true passion for art and design.

The course is graded according to the academic base of the students. For beginners, the course focuses on basic sketching and drawing techniques, guiding students to create their own creativity through line. For students who need more advanced study, the focus is on helping students to find their own beauty and perceptions in the process of creating art, and to draw their own unique ideas and personalities.

Core Art Curriculum

Pointillism: light and shadow and brushstrokes

Students in the beginners' class learn about different variations of shadows and angles of objects, learn about sketching, the pointillist method of drawing and its use, and practice drawing geometry and textures to build a good foundation for future art from now on.

Sketching process

Light and shade practice, feeling the effects of light on shadows at different angles

Classroom texture creation practice work

After a long period of study and contact, the students experimented with self-portraits using techniques such as composition and light and shade. Students learn to use light and shade and brush strokes to create self-portraits through pointillism. For a good self-portrait, drawing the features of one's face is only the foundation, but it is more important to reflect the main character's appearance and interaction with the environment through the brush.

The finished product of the student's self-portrait is lifelike through the features composed of points

It was a special experience for the students to create self-portraits independently, which not only aroused their strong interest in painting art, but also encouraged them to further study the art of painting.

Chinese style theme creation

Intermediate students were assessed for artistic creation with the theme of Chinese style. After the topic was released, the students searched for materials and read literature. In the process of searching, they kept thinking and summarizing, and made clear their own perception and understanding of Chinese style.

In the process of exploring, students drew funny or elegant images based on their favorite themes. Some people think that "not the true face of the Lushan mountain, only the body in the mountain", is a brilliant stroke of Chinese culture; Others, using Chinese mythology as a backdrop, depict a god in a long dress, surrounded by dragons and phoenixes, without knowing where to look.

With a Chinese theme, each painting tells a special story

For them, this is not only a painting of Chinese style, but also expresses their understanding of Chinese culture through each brush stroke. From then on, "Chinese wind" will no longer be just an empty term, but what they find, which looks at the unknown gods, the blooming flowers, streamers waving in the wind knife and gun. This is the perception they get from artistic exploration, this is the unique interpretation in their mind, is something that comes from learning but is far more precious than learning.

Unique and original work

For students with a solid foundation in painting, the examination content of the art course is also upgraded, requiring them to create art works with their own unique style. This is definitely not an easy job. They need to independently design the style, creativity, layout and final drawing of the works on the premise of ensuring the quality. As you can imagine, this is quite challenging.

Design conception and creative process

The process of creating a work of art is difficult and challenging. In the process of creation, students will be faced with numerous problems, the connotation of the work, the design of space, the use of color, every detail needs students to constantly ponder.

The students work alone on their designs

Their silhouettes were reflected in the light on the floor, and every change they made was recorded on a sheet of draft paper. When they put down their pens at the end of their work, the stunning designs were on display for all to see. These works are not only the harvest of the course, but also the medals of their hard work, and they deserve to be applauded for their efforts.

Students explain their inspiration for their creations

They used their imagination and creativity to get their minds out of the box, to learn what they loved, to think what they thought and to draw what they saw. They become more than just a good student in the classroom, they become true creators.

A new term with a new way to keep the beauty

The cultural history of museums

The essence of a museum is its ability to separate memories from the culture on which they were originally based. It records time and preserves art. Looking at the artworks in a museum reveals where civilisation came from and where it is going.

Museums covered in this term's art course

Recommended books for the art course

Art course in action

In the new term, the Art course takes students through the evolution of museums from 16th century (European) showcases to late 20th century art centres. They will analyse how museum artworks and installations fit together in different periods, in order to gain information about changes in cultural values and to examine the rules and motivations for collecting and displaying artworks in museums. Art classes this term.

A new artistic challenge

With the deepening of art learning, students are also continuing to explore the forms of artistic creation. This semester, the challenge escalates as students learn about 3D modeling techniques that are currently used in a wide range of applications.

3D modeling operation real scene

Through learning, I can realize the drawing of images and the creation of art works by using the lines in the design software. Now the students have begun their first task of the semester, they will use the software to draw their mind of what home would look like. This assessment covers the creative knowledge and skills learned so far in the art course.

Art is a silent language that allows us to express ourselves, communicate with others, and convey important ideas and information in different ways. These students, who are learning the art of making art, are using lines and light to express, oppose, expose and celebrate the world as they know it.

They are young artists, young creators, using the universal language of art, to record the diversity of life, the diversity of culture.
