Building Community Through Storytelling

On March 20, TWIS celebrates World Storytelling Day with the whole community. This year's theme is "Together We Can," which emphasizes the need for unity and collaboration in society to inspire change and build stronger communities. In honor of this day, storytellers around the world share tales that reflect this theme and bring people together. At TWIS, guess who are the storytellers and what they share on the day?

Coming Together

Inspiring Change

On World Storytelling Day, we were fortunate to have a special visitor, Mr. Michael Neil Kelly, the author of Plato's Potatoes. The book is about two girls who learn the importance of sharing and not being greedy. Kayla from PYP4 and Ronald from MYP1 volunteered to help Mr. Michael read the book, and for their excellent reading, Mr. Michael gave each one a copy of his book.

During the reading, Mr. Michael took some questions from the audience. He shared that he has written several books for different age groups, including children, teenagers, and adults. When asked about his inspiration for writing, Mr. Michael credited his father, who encouraged him to read a lot as a child. When asked about how long it took him to write the book, Mr. Michael shared that it only took him ten days, but he spent two months making revisions to improve it.

Mr. Charles, our PYP3 homeroom teacher, also added that Mr. Michael's visit was a great lesson in the writing process. Writing is not always perfect the first time, but revisions are necessary to make it better.

Mr. Michael's visit concluded with him writing dedications for his copies of Plato's Potatoes, which are now a part of the primary library's collection. We are grateful for Mr. Michael's visit and hope that he stops by again soon with his next book. This World Storytelling Day, let's remember the importance of coming together and inspiring change through our shared stories.

The competition was fierce, but the students rose to the challenge and gave it their all. Each participant showcased their storytelling skills and tried to outdo their fellow contestants in the eyes of the judges.

Judges:" The competition was not just about storytelling; it was about engaging the audience and captivating them with a tale."

The competition was a success, and we hope that it has inspired our young audience to recognize the power of stories and the benefits of becoming good storytellers. Perhaps, one day, they too will grace the stage and weave their magic with words. For now, we congratulate our winners and applaud all the participants for their hard work and dedication.

Voice of Resilience:

MYP Students Share

Their Pandemic Memoirs

The third event on World Storytelling Day celebrated the power of storytelling through the lens of the pandemic years. In this event, students from the MYP language and literature class shared their memoir excerpts with a public audience. Applying the elements of memoir writing, their writing offered a unique perspective on the pandemic years, and how it has impacted our lives in profound ways.

As the audience settled in, they were treated to an array of personal stories that captured the essence of these unprecedented times. The young memoirists shared their challenges, their triumphs, and their moments of hope, providing a glimpse into the resilience and strength of the human spirit.

Their writing was not only a testament to their own experiences but also to those of millions of people worldwide who have been affected by the pandemic. Through their words, they gave voice to a collective experience, reminding us that we are not alone in this.

As the event unfolded, the power of storytelling was palpable. The audience was moved, inspired, and reminded of the importance of sharing our stories with one another. The memoir excerpts showed that storytelling has the ability to bring us together, offer comfort, and help us make sense of the world around us.

At the end of the event, the students received a well-deserved round of applause for their bravery and creativity. Their memoirs were a shining example of the power of storytelling to create community, inspire change, and bring hope in times of crisis.
